Abstract

This study aims to conduct a comparative analysis of three mathematics textbooks on the topic of Polyhedrons, namely two textbooks from Indonesia (KTSP 2006 and Kurikulum Merdeka 2022) and one textbook from Singapore (New Syllabus Mathematics 2018). The method used is descriptive comparative with document analysis techniques. The focus of the study includes the presentation of facts, concepts, and principles, as well as question analysis based on Bloom’s Taxonomy cognitive levels, alignment with the PISA framework, and problem-solving components. The results indicate that the Kurikulum Merdeka textbook stands out in its variety of cognitive levels (C1–C6) and integration of PISA-type questions. The KTSP textbook follows a more deductive approach and lacks higher-order thinking questions, while the Singaporean textbook balances inductive and deductive approaches but only covers C3–C4 levels. All three textbooks include problem-solving tasks with varying levels of complexity. These findings offer insights for the development of more effective and context-based mathematics textbooks.

Abstract

Mathematics education in the 21st century, a field increasingly shaped by rapid technological advancement and global demands for critical thinking, necessitates the use of contextual, technology-enhanced learning media that promote higher-order thinking skills, particularly in the area of problem solving. Addressing this need, the present study focused on developing a STEM-based digital worksheet, a technology-integrated instructional tool aimed at enhancing students’ mathematical problem-solving skills within the topic of the Pythagorean Theorem. Adopting a Research and Development (R&D) framework, specifically the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation), the study involved a series of methodical phases designed to ensure both pedagogical soundness and technological relevance. Data collection involved conducting interviews and observations, analyzing relevant documents, validating content through expert review, and administering both practicality questionnaires and performance-based assessments grounded in Polya’s problem-solving rubric. Validation by three subject-matter experts, serving as evaluators of content quality and instructional alignment, resulted in an average score of 83.68%, denoting high validity. Practicality, assessed through one-on-one and small-group trials, achieved a mean score of 82.33%, reflecting strong user acceptance and ease of implementation. A field test with 30 students revealed an average problem-solving score of 75%, with notable strengths in identifying and understanding the problem, and relative weaknesses in the final stage of reviewing solutions. These findings, while preliminary, suggest that developing and implementing STEM-based digital worksheets can serve as a promising approach to fostering mathematical problem solving by embedding learning in contextual, interactive, and technologically enriched environments.

Abstract

Mastery of the concepts of ratio and proportion is essential in mathematics education, as it underpins students’ ability to develop logical reasoning and proportional thinking skills critical for advanced mathematical understanding. Despite its importance, students often struggle with these concepts due to the lack of learning activities that meaningfully connect mathematics to real-life contexts and cultural relevance. This disconnect highlights a gap in instructional approaches that fail to bridge abstract mathematical content with students’ lived experiences. Addressing this issue, the present study introduces a novel integration of the Pendidikan Matematika Realistik Indonesia (PMRI) approach with local cultural context, specifically the traditional Sumatran dish, namely lemang, to enhance students' conceptual grasp of ratio and proportion. The study aims to design and implement a PMRI-based learning sequence centered on the lemang context to facilitate meaningful learning experiences among junior high school students. Employing a design research methodology, the study involved seventh-grade students at SMP IT An-Nida Lubuklinggau, with data collected through student activity sheets (SAS), classroom observations, interviews, and documentation. Findings indicate that the integration of PMRI with the lemang context significantly supports students' progressive understanding of ratio and proportion, fostering both cognitive engagement and cultural appreciation. This research contributes to the enrichment of mathematics education by demonstrating how culturally contextualized PMRI designs can promote deeper learning and affirm the relevance of mathematical knowledge in students' everyday lives.
