Abstract

Straight line equations are one of the mathematical materials that are often difficult to understand. This difficulty is due to a teaching approach that often emphasizes memorizing formulas without a deep understanding, as well as a lack of reasoning and problem-solving exercises. This study aims to design a learning trajectory of straight line equations using the Rigorous Mathematical Thinking (RMT) approach and its effectiveness on students' relational understanding. The research method used is design research, which focuses on designing a learning trajectory and consists of three stages: preliminary analysis, experiment, and retrospective which are carried out in two cycles. The subjects of this study were 8th grade students of Palembang State Junior High School, with 32 students as participants in the pilot experiment and 36 students as participants in the teaching experiment, which were selected by purposive sampling. Data is collected through observation, written tests, and interviews. The data from the HLT design will be analyzed qualitatively and  the results of the pre-test and post-test will be analyzed quantitatively. The results of this study produce a learning trajectory consisting of two main activities i.e Solving problems related to line equations that go through two points, and perpendicular line equations. The learning trajectory developed is able to support students' relational understanding, where in the learning process, students are directed to utilize the various knowledge they have, determine the most effective and efficient strategies, provide detailed solutions, and believe in the truth of the answers they use in solving problems. In addition, pre and post test results, there is an increase in relational understanding, it can be concluded that the RMT-based learning trajectory is effective for improving students' relational understanding of students in learning straight line equation material.

Abstract

Background:Understanding fractions in mathematics often poses greater complexity compared to integral numbers. The primary difficulty lies in students' inadequate grasp of fractional basics, notably in comparing and sequencing fractions.Aim: This research seeks to create and evaluate a learning pathway's effect on fourth graders' comprehension of fractions, with a focus on their comparison and sequencing.Method: Employing a design research validation study approach, the research progresses through preliminary design, experimental design, and retrospective analysis. Conducted in a Palembang school involving six fourth graders recommended by their teacher, data collection encompassed essay-based pre and post-tests, Student Activity Sheets, observations, interviews, and documentations. The data analysis was retrospectively carried out, anchored on HLT as the benchmark.Result: Findings reveal a student learning trajectory encompassing three principal activities. Initially, students used folding and gluing of paper to discern fraction values. Subsequently, they engaged in coloring and illustrating folds for fraction comparison. The final activity involved drawing, coloring boxes, and fraction comparison and sequencing. Overall, students showed proficiency in understanding and determining fraction values and comparing them, yet struggled with ordering certain fractions. Conclusion: The structured learning path facilitated students' understanding of basic fraction concepts, especially in comparing them. Nevertheless, reinforcing methods or approaches for teaching fraction ordering is essential.

Abstract

Problem-solving ability is a critical component of mathematics education, particularly in understanding Pythagorean theorem concepts. However, current instructional practices often lack integration of STEM approaches and interactive digital tools that support the development of this ability. This study aimed to develop a valid, practical, and potentially effective STEM-based Electronic Student Worksheet (E-LKPD) to enhance students’ problem-solving ability. The research employed the ADDIE development model (Analyze, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation) and involved expert validation, practicality testing, and effectiveness assessment with eighth-grade students in a public junior high school following the Merdeka Curriculum. Data were collected through expert validation sheets, student practicality questionnaires, and problem-solving ability tests, then analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results showed that the E-LKPD met validity criteria with an average score of 4.20, reached a practicality level of 85.33%, and demonstrated a positive potential effect, with 57.71% of students achieving a good performance in problem-solving ability. These findings indicate that the developed STEM-based E-LKPD aligns with pedagogical and technological requirements and is suitable for implementation in mathematics learning contexts. This study contributes to digital mathematics pedagogy by offering a contextual STEM-based learning tool supported by interactive technology, addressing current needs in technology-integrated instruction. Abstract

Mathematics education in the 21st century, a field increasingly shaped by rapid technological advancement and global demands for critical thinking, necessitates the use of contextual, technology-enhanced learning media that promote higher-order thinking skills, particularly in the area of problem solving. Addressing this need, the present study focused on developing a STEM-based digital worksheet, a technology-integrated instructional tool aimed at enhancing students’ mathematical problem-solving skills within the topic of the Pythagorean Theorem. Adopting a Research and Development (R&D) framework, specifically the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation), the study involved a series of methodical phases designed to ensure both pedagogical soundness and technological relevance. Data collection involved conducting interviews and observations, analyzing relevant documents, validating content through expert review, and administering both practicality questionnaires and performance-based assessments grounded in Polya’s problem-solving rubric. Validation by three subject-matter experts, serving as evaluators of content quality and instructional alignment, resulted in an average score of 83.68%, denoting high validity. Practicality, assessed through one-on-one and small-group trials, achieved a mean score of 82.33%, reflecting strong user acceptance and ease of implementation. A field test with 30 students revealed an average problem-solving score of 75%, with notable strengths in identifying and understanding the problem, and relative weaknesses in the final stage of reviewing solutions. These findings, while preliminary, suggest that developing and implementing STEM-based digital worksheets can serve as a promising approach to fostering mathematical problem solving by embedding learning in contextual, interactive, and technologically enriched environments.
