Abstract

This research was conducted in January 2025 on the East Coast of Karimun Island, Riau Islands Province. This study aimed to determine the type and abundance of Beach Litter on the East Coast of Karimun Island, Riau Islands Province. The method used in this research is a survey method with direct observation and data collection at the research location. The waste data obtained was analyzed statistically, and then the results were presented descriptively, referring to the supporting literature. The most dominant type of waste is plastic-type at Station I (Coastal Area), and the last type of waste obtained is rubber-type at Station II (Ketam Beach), for the results of the highest abundance between stations is found at Station I, namely 7,12 units/m² and the lowest abundance at station II, namely 0,84 units/m². In comparison, the abundance results between sampling times obtained the highest abundance during the Weekend of 19,48 units/m² and the lowest abundance during Weekday of 11,88 units/m². Based on the difference test of abundance between stations and between sampling times, there is a real or significant difference (P <0,05)

Abstract

Global climate change caused by increasing atmospheric CO₂ emissions threatens coastal ecosystems, including mangrove forests that function as carbon sinks. Kedabu Rapat Village in Meranti Islands Regency has implemented a mangrove rehabilitation program since 2017 to overcome coastal abrasion and restore the ecosystem. This study examines mangrove density, organic carbon stock in sediment, the relationship between density and carbon stock, and variations in carbon stock between sediment depths. The study was conducted at three stations according to the year of rehabilitation using a survey method with sediment sampling as deep as 30 cm, Organic carbon was analyzed using the LOI method. The study's results identified one mangrove species, Avicennia alba, from the Acanthaceae family, which dominated all observation stations. Vegetation density is classified as very dense, averaging 7,911 ind/ha, with the highest density at Station 1 (8,935 ind/ha). All stations' average sediment carbon stock reached 117.23 tons/ha, with the highest value at Station 3 (135.19 tons/ha) and the lowest at Station 1 (96.97 tons/ha). Statistical analysis revealed a weak correlation (r = 0.218; p > 0.05) between mangrove density and sediment carbon stock, indicating that other environmental factors, such as sedimentation and sediment input, play a more significant role. The distribution of carbon stock by depth was relatively uniform, ranging from 38.25 to 40.58 tons/ha. These results indicate that external factors are also determinants of carbon absorption rates

Abstract

Plastics in the environment would eventually be degraded into plastic granules which are called microplastics. In recent years, microplastics have been spread widely not only inland but also in aquatic habitats, where averagely 5% of the plastic produced each year will end up in marine waters. The purpose of this study which was conducted in October to November 2020 was to identify the type and abundance of microplastics in the sediment as well as its possible relationship with the sediment organic matter in Dumai waters. Sediment samples were taken from Dumai coastal waters by using purposive sampling method. Identification of the types and abundance of microplastics as well as the analysis of sediment organic content were carried out in the Laboratory of Chemical Oceanography, Department of Marine Sciences, Universitas Riau. Microplastic and sediment particles were separated using 150 ml saturated NaCl solution. The types of microplastics found are fiber, fragment and films, where fiber was found to be the most commonly found (36.43%), followed by fragments (31.97%) and films (31.60%), respectively. No significant correlation found between microplastic abundance and the sediment organic content in Dumai coastal waters.

Abstract

This research was conducted in February-April 2021 by taking samples of mangrove clams (Geloina erosa) and sediment from Selat Baru and Teluk Pambang coastal area in Bantan District, Bengkalis Regency, Riau Province. The purpose of this study was to determine the concentration of heavy metals, namely Pb and Cu, in sediment and mangrove clams that are abundant in the studied area. The research method used is the survey method and samples were taken by means of the purposive sampling technique. Heavy metal concentrations were analyzed by using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS). The results showed that the concentrations of Pb and Cu in the mangrove clams and sediments in the studied area had not yet passed the threshold level. Pb and Cu concentrations found on clams were 0.0468 μg/g and 0.1043 μg/g respectively. Meanwhile, the concentration of Pb in the sediment was 0.10185 μg/g and Cu 0.3313 μg/g. Mangrove clams in the north coast of Bengkalis Island have the ability to accumulate Pb and Cu with a low ability (BCF<1). The maximum Tolerable Intake of the clams for humans with a bodyweight of 70 kg is 0.0983 kg/week (Lead) and 7.3010 kg/week for Copper.

Abstract

This study was conducted in March 2020 to know the presence of microplastics in the digestive tract of wild threadfin fish in the coastal waters of Karimun Besar Island, Riau Islands. The method used in this study was survey method. The results showed that the abundance of microplastics in the digestive tract of fish varies, the lowest of 2.89 particles / individu to the highest of 5.89 particles / individu with the dominant type found was fibre. The abundance of microplastic at station 1 was found to be higher than in station 2. The different anthropogenic activities in the two station were discussed. The Relationship between kurau fish size and microplastic abundance is weak with r = 0.21 and R² = 4.6% with the regression equation is y = 7.9747 – 0.0813x.

Abstract

High anthropogenic activities on the east coast of Karimun Besar Island contribute a certain amount of wastes, especially plastics. Plastics will be degraded due to the natural mechanism of smaller parts and known as microplastics. Small size and widespread distribution has caused microplastics can be found widely in the ocean and coastal areas. This study was conducted in March 2020, located on the east coast of Karimun Besar Island, Province of Riau Islands. The purpose of this study was to know the presence of microplastics in its coastal water. The method used in this study was a survey method by taking samples from four stations with suspected different anthropogenic activities. The results showed that the lowest abundance of microplastics in the coastal waters of the east coast of Karimun Besar Island was 63,33 particles/m3 and the highest was 161,66 particles/m3, with the dominant type found was fibre. The abundance of the microplastic between station was found to be significantly different (p < 0,05).

Abstract

This research was carried out in March 2020 to identify the type and abundance of microplastics and the relationship between the abundance of microplastics and the size (weight and length) of Telescopium telescopium in the coastal waters of Karimun Island, Riau Islands Province. Tanjung Balai Karimun has densely populated settlements and has many tourist attractions, so it is suspected that a large amount of plastic used is wasted into marine waters and fragmented into microplastics. The method used in this research is the survey method. The results showed that the abundance of microplastics in T.telescopium ranged from 6.9 - 12 particles/individual. The types of microplastics found were fibre, film and fragments, with the dominant type being Fiber. The abundance of fibre type microplastics has a strong relationship with weight and a moderate to length relationship. The abundance of film and fragment microplastics had a weak relationship with weight and length.

Abstract

This study was conducted in August 2024 in the coastal area of Sri Tanjung Village, Rupat Sub-district, Bengkalis Regency. The objectives of this research were to identify the types and abundance of microplastics, examine the differences in microplastic abundance across sizes, analyze the relationship between microplastic abundance and size (shell length and total weight), and explore the relationship between microplastic abundance in Meretrix meretrix clams and sediments. A survey method was used. Random sampling of M. meretrix was carried out using small shovels and traditional fisher tools (iron rakes) during the lowest tidal conditions. Results indicated that water quality parameters in Sri Tanjung were relatively good, with temperatures of 28–31°C, salinity ranging from 21–26%, brightness values between 19–25 cm, and pH values of 7–7.7. Types of microplastics found in M. meretrix and sediments in the coastal area included fragments, fibers, and films, with an average microplastic abundance of 55.16 particles/g and 1310 particles/kg, respectively. The abundance of microplastics was categorized based on the morphometric size of clams: small (61.32 particles/g), medium (45.01 particles/g), and large (59.16 particles/g). Sediments showed an average abundance of 1310 particles/kg. Fragment-type microplastics were the most dominant in both clams and sediments, with average abundances in small clams (29.22 particles/g), medium clams (21.29 particles/g), large clams (62.27 particles/g), and sediments (541.3 particles/kg). Film-type microplastics were the least abundant, with average values in small clams (14.44 particles/g), medium clams (10.80 particles/g), large clams (13.05 particles/g), and sediments (319.3 particles/kg). A one-way ANOVA test revealed significant differences (p < 0.05) in microplastic abundance between small and medium and medium and large clams but not between small and large clams (p > 0.05)

Abstract

Industrial and shipping activities in coastal areas have the potential to increase heavy metal pollution, which can accumulate in marine organisms and impact food safety. On the west coast of Dumai, Geloina erosa and Cerithidea obtusa are widely consumed by the local community, making it important to study their heavy metal content. This study aims to analyse the levels of Pb, Cu, and Zn in the soft tissues of these two species and compare the differences between species and sampling locations. The study was conducted in February 2025 at two stations: Station 1 (Purnama) and Station 2 (Pangkalan Sesai). Samples were collected using purposive sampling and analysed using Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS). The results showed that the average Pb, Cu, and Zn content in G. erosa were 6.79 µg/g, 6.13 µg/g, and 8.36 µg/g, respectively, while in C. obtusa they were 7.09 µg/g, 6.27 µg/g, and 7.41 µg/g. Significant differences (p < 0.05) were detected in the Cu and Zn content in G. erosa, as well as Zn in C. obtusa, between stations. Pb and Cu were generally higher in both species at Station 2, while the highest Zn levels were found in G. erosa at Station 1 (9.12 µg/g) and C. obtusa at Station 2 (8.50 µg/g). The highest PTWI value was found in G. erosa at Station 1; however, all results remained within safe consumption limits. Therefore, both species are deemed safe for consumption, despite variations in heavy metal content between species and research locations

Abstract

Coastal ecosystems play a crucial role in supporting biodiversity, but are increasingly threatened by heavy metal pollution from industrial and domestic activities. The mangrove species Avicennia alba can absorb heavy metals through phytoremediation processes, making it a promising bioindicator of environmental contamination. This study aimed to analyze the concentrations and variations in the accumulation of lead (Pb) and copper (Cu) in A. alba roots, stems, and leaves along the western coast of Dumai City, Riau Province. Fieldwork was conducted from January to February 2025 at two sampling sites: Pangkalan Sesai Village (Station 1) and Purnama Village (Station 2). Heavy metal concentrations were determined using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS) following wet digestion. Environmental parameters were also measured, including temperature, salinity, and pH. Data analysis involved descriptive statistics, non-parametric tests, and independent t-tests. The results indicated that Pb and Cu were present in all plant parts. The highest concentration of Pb was found in the stems (7.05 µg/g), while Cu was most concentrated in the roots (5.38 µg/g). No statistically significant differences were observed among plant parts (p > 0.05); however, a significant spatial difference in Pb concentrations between the two stations was detected (p < 0.05). These findings suggest that anthropogenic activities and local water quality conditions likely Influence the observed variations. Overall, A. alba demonstrates strong potential as a bioindicator species for monitoring heavy metal contamination in coastal environments.
