Abstract

Humor is a powerful communication tool that goes beyond entertainment to build emotional connection, ease tension, and increase message effectiveness. In today’s digital era, it has become a strategic means of capturing attention, shaping perceptions, and sustaining engagement across social media platforms. This study examines the role of humorous content in enhancing audience engagement and strengthening media credibility on the Instagram account @simamaungcom, an independent platform focused on the Persib Bandung supporter community. Using qualitative content analysis of 24 humorous posts uploaded between January and March 2025, the findings indicate that humor significantly increases interaction and meets the audience’s affective, social, and cognitive needs, consistent with the Uses and Gratifications Theory. Two primary forms of humor, identification and clarification, contribute to humanizing communication, simplifying complex football-related information, and reinforcing solidarity within the Bobotoh community. In the context of high social media use and a strong culture of humor among supporters, these results demonstrate that humor functions not only as an entertainment medium but also as an element that supports collective identity formation, sustains emotional closeness, and reduces tension during periods of poor team performance. These findings offer valuable insights for digital media practitioners in designing effective humor strategies to enhance engagement, strengthen audience relations, and uphold credibility within the dynamic environment of sports communication.

Abstract

Digital job-seeker communities increasingly function as spaces for employment information, peer support, and interaction, yet the mechanisms through which participatory communication becomes relational community engagement remain insufficiently explained, particularly in anonymous and administrator-mediated settings. This study examines how participatory communication is enacted within @worksfess on X and how administrators and followers experience these practices as community engagement. A bounded qualitative case-study design was used. Data were generated from semi-structured interviews with four purposively selected participants—two account administrators and two active followers—and non-participant observation of five publicly accessible @worksfess posts and their interaction threads between May and August 2026. Data were analyzed through the Miles-Huberman-Saldaña interactive process and interpreted using Rahim’s dimensions of heteroglossia, dialogue, polyphony, and carnival alongside sense-of-community dimensions. The findings show that engagement is supported by reciprocal information exchange, diverse employment experiences, member-to-member advice, and an informal communication style that can lower interactional barriers. Administrators structure participation through content selection and posting, while followers extend discussions through replies, experiential advice, clarification, and mutual support. Visible interaction, however, is uneven and cannot be treated as evidence of community-wide or causal effects. The study extends participatory communication to an anonymous digital job-seeking context and shows how platform-mediated dialogue, plural voices, and shared experience can support a situated sense of community.

Abstract

Gender-responsive transportation policy is increasingly recognised as an important instrument for women’s safety in public space, yet the discourse through which such policies are communicated by state actors in moments of crisis remains underexplored. This study examines how women’s safety is discursively constructed in two short, publicly available statements by Indonesia’s Minister of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection (PPPA) following the fatal Kereta Rel Listrik (KRL) Commuter Line accident at Bekasi Timur Station in April 2026: an unscripted doorstop media statement (Corpus 1; five turns; approximately 100 words) and a subsequent formal clarification (Corpus 2; six turns; approximately 110 words). Using Fairclough’s (1995, 2003) three-dimensional Critical Discourse Analysis framework, supported by Halliday’s (1994) transitivity system for clause-level coding, the two verbatim transcripts were analysed descriptively, interpretively, and explanatorily, with a complete clause inventory constructed for both corpora. The analysis suggests four patterns. First, in Corpus 1 women occupy the roles of Senser and Carrier in every finite clause and appear as Actor in only one embedded, non-finite construction, indicating a discourse that positions women predominantly as recipients rather than agents of safety. Second, the entity from whom protection is required is not lexicalised; this omission is interpreted, as one plausible contextual reading among several, as activating a cultural assumption of male threat, while spatial relocation of the carriage is proposed as the primary response. Third, the doorstop genre, produced without institutional preparation, is associated with hedged, tentative language that this study interprets as a mismatch with the response prescribed for an accidental-crisis cluster. Fourth, the clarification statement follows a four-move rhetorical structure resembling institutional impression management that moderates surface-level framing, while women’s earlier representational pattern largely, though not entirely, persists: women are subsumed under society and are named as equal subjects of safety alongside men only once, in Corpus 2. These findings are offered as an exploratory, corpus-specific contribution to research on gendered crisis communication in Indonesian public institutions, with implications for gender-responsive public-speaking training.
