Abstract

Cats are known to be potential reservoirs for a variety of zoonotic pathogens. However, the overall prevalence of zoonotic pathogens in the cat population remains unclear amid growing concerns. This study aimed to measure the combined prevalence of zoonotic pathogens in cats through a systematic review and meta-analysis. Relevant literature reporting the prevalence of zoonotic pathogens in cats, published from 2015 to 2025, was collected from databases. A total of 49 studies met the inclusion criteria, encompassing a total sample size of 18,206 cats. A meta-analysis was performed using a random-effects model. Toxoplasma gondii, Bartonella henselae, and Campylobacter spp. were the most frequently reported pathogens, with pooled prevalence estimates presented with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). The I² statistic was used to assess heterogeneity. The combined prevalence of zoonotic pathogens in cats was estimated at 24% (95% CI: 17–32%). Considerable heterogeneity was observed among the studies (I² = 98.4%, p < 0.001), and this likely reflects differences in geographic region, diagnostic methods, and pathogen type. Individual study prevalences ranged from 0.02 to 0.97, with varying weights according to sample size and variance. This meta-analysis highlights the relatively high prevalence of zoonotic pathogens among cats. The relevance of applying a One Health perspective is emphasized by these findings for the development of evidence-based public health policies to reduce zoonotic risks at the community and global levels.

Abstract

ABSTRACT  Foot and mouth disease (FMD) and Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) have been designated as an infectious disease outbreak in livestock in Indonesia. The spread of this case has reached most farms in Indonesia, including livestock warehouses in the Special Region of Yogyakarta, namely Gunung Kidul district. The aim of this activity is to monitor and handle cases of PMK and LSD in Semanu, Playen and Panggang in Gunung Kidul Regency. This community service activity was carried out jointly with the Semanu, Playen and Panggang health centers in Gunung Kidul Regency, the Department of Internal Medicine, FKH UGM, and large animal internal clinic co-assistance students from the PPDH FKH UGM study program. Based on reports from breeders who entered the Puskeswan in June and July 2023, clinical trials were carried out on livestock and livestock treatment. In the Semanu area there was a decrease in FMD cases from one case to no cases, for LSD cases there was also a decrease from 10 to 6 cases. The decline in FMD cases also occurred in Playen District, from one case to zero cases, while LSD cases increased from five cases to seven cases. FMD cases increased in Panggang sub-district from one case to two cases, and LSD cases decreased from 22 to 4 cases. The conclusion from this activity is that cases of FMD and LSD are still found in the Semanu, Playen and Panggang Districts, but are decreasing. Treatment of sick animals and vaccination of healthy animals is the advice given.  Keywords: Gunung Kidul; LSD; Livestock; PMK   ABSTRAK Penyakit mulut dan kuku (PMK) telah ditetapkan sebagai wabah penyakit menular pada peternakan di Indonesia. Abstract

The dermatophytosis treatment in dogs can fail due to dermatophyte resistance to antifungals. The purpose of this study is to determine the antifungal sensitivity of dermatophyte Microsporum canis (M. canis) isolated from dogs with dermatophyte. A total of 17 M. canis dog isolateswere tested for sensitivity to 25 g fluconazole, 25 g griseofulvin, 15 g ketoconazole and 30 g terbinafine, using the disc diffusion method. The M. canis isolates were cultured on Sabouraud's Dextrose Agar media, placed an antifungal disc, and then incubated at 28 C for 7 days. Thediameter of inhibition zone was measured, then compared with the standard, to determine whether they were sensitive, intermediate or resistant. The results of this study indicate that 16 isolates were sensitive to fluconazole; 17 isolates were sensitive to griseofulvin, ketoconazole andterbinafine; and one isolate was intermediate to fluconazole. Based on these results, it is concluded that all 17 (100%) isolates are sensitive to theantifungals griseofulvin, ketoconazole, terbinafine, and 16 (94%) isolates are sensitive to fluconazole. Thus, the four antifungals can be selectedto treat dermatophytes in dogs.

Abstract

This research was carried out to determine the morphology and morphometry of Haemonchus contortus in goats. Adult female parasites were collected from abomasum of naturally infected goats and stored in lactophenol. Images of the parasite were acquired using lucida camera and measurement was performed using Axiovision LE software. Basic characters of the morphology and morphometry of Haemonchus spp. were identified by determining the value of the discriminant function of three parameters on spicule. Vulvar morphology was identified by vulvar flap shape. Data were presented in terms of mean, standard deviation, and percentage. A hundred percent of the parasites were H. contortus with discriminant function value 0.63. The size of female parasites was longer and wider (25.5-32.6 mm; 0.38-0.63 mm) than that of male ones (17.3-20.0 mm; 0.24-0.33 mm). There were only 2 varieties of vulvar flap, linguiform (81%), and knobbed (19%). There were 5 subclasses identified in the linguiform type, including linguiform A (39%), linguiform B (22%), linguiform C (17%), linguiform I (1%), and a new subclass of linguiform D (2%). Based on the the type of vulvar flap, H. contortus found in goats in Yogyakarta were different to those found in previous researches. The findings could be used in identifying the parasite species in small ruminants.

Abstract

Background: Selenium (Se) is an element commonly found in nature. Selenium is found in the soil and is absorbed by plants at different levels depending on plant species, fertilizer use, and rainfall, while vitamin E is abundant in legume plants and fresh grass. Selenium and vitamin E are essential elements for ruminants and are needed for average growth and help prevent other health problems. The roles of these two elements are closely related because they can protect cells from the detrimental effects of oxidation, even though they have different mechanisms. Deficiency of one or both elements can cause white muscle disease, retained placenta, metritis, decreased immune function, and mastitis. However, research and field studies also show that Se and vitamin E can cause poisoning in ruminants. Reviews : This article will briefly review the impact of Se Vitamin E deficiency and toxicity on ruminants.

Abstract

Feline panleukopenia (FPL) is a viral infectious disease caused by the feline panleukopenia virus (FPV) that affects cats of all ages. Clinical symptoms that appear in each individual cat vary greatly, depending on age, immune status, and the presence or absence of secondary infection. The aim of this research was to diagnose the FPL based on clinical signs and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in cat with various ages. This study used 15 cats that showed one of clinical symptoms including lethargy, anorexia, fever, diarrhea, and vomiting. All cats were examined physically and by PCR of blood, then analyzed descriptively. The results showed that 10/15 (66.7%) cats were <7 months, 4/15 (26.7%) were 7-12 months, and 1/15 (6.6%) was >1 year old. Identification by PCR showed that 100% of the samples positive, so that all of cats diagnosed FPL. Clinical signs that commonly appeared in this study included anorexia (80%), fever (80%), vomiting (73.3%), lethargy (66.7%), and diarrhea (40%). Young cats <7 months commonly showed anorexia, fever, vomiting, and lethargy, cats aged 7-12 months commonly showed anorexia, fever, vomiting, and diarrhea, cat aged >12 months experienced anorexia and vomiting. Concluded that the predominant clinical symptoms of FPL in young cats were anorexia, fever, vomiting and lethargy, whereas in adult cats anorexia, fever, vomiting, and diarrhea. Clinical symptoms can be used for initial screening of FPL, but the causative diagnosis needs to be determined by polymerase chain reaction.
