Abstract

This study examines Japanese advertising and product-information texts on Shiseido Japan’s official website (www.brand.shiseido.co.jp) that grammatically prevent readers from construing statements as universal claims (“always” or “true for everyone”). It addresses two problems: how universal readings are blocked through grammatical construction in this register, and how the main blocking mechanisms differ in limiting generalisation and managing scope. The data consist of sentence-level usage, precautionary, and quality-related statements that plausibly invite broad general interpretations. Seven analytically representative tokens are used as illustrative evidence, covering wake-negation, baai-based case framing, and event/occasion packaging with V-ru koto ga aru, including rare-event calibration with mare ni and layered conditional framing. The study employs qualitative, theory-driven grammatical analysis focusing on clause structure, embedding, nominalisation, connective relations, and the compositional contribution of key markers. The results identify recurring templates with distinct structural signatures. Wake-negation blocks over-strong uptake by denying a candidate inference (…to iu wake de wa arimasen). Case framing with baai shifts categorical commitments into situation-restricted possibility (…baai ga arimasu), including complex variants that add causal linkage, avoidance marking, and directive closure. Event/occasion packaging with koto plus existential predication (…koto ga arimasu) presents anomalies as contingent occurrences, and it can be triggered by causal conditions (e.g., temperature change) or conditional frames (…to). Rare-event marking with mare ni further calibrates frequency and often co-occurs with contrastive reassurance about quality. Overall, universal-blocking emerges as a set of non-redundant grammatical routes that constrain inference, situational domain, and event profiling in a compact public informational genre.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the lexical variations that emerge based on gender factor within the sociolinguistic context of SMP Bintang Persada Denpasar. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach using the observational method and note-taking technique by presenting a list of glosses to 20 eight-grade students, consisting of 10 male and 10 female participants. The lexical data were analyzed using the intralingual and extralingual comparison methods. The findings reveal significant lexical differences between the two speaker groups. Female student tend to use more varied, complete, and expressive lexical forms, including full words and phrasal expressions. In contrast, male students show a tendency to use shorter, more efficient lexical forms dominated by abbreviations and rough expressions. These findings highlight that gender functions as a linguistic marker shaping distinct communicative patterns among adolescents, with female students prioritizing social expression and affection, while male students emphasize practicality and efficiency in language use.

Abstract

Balinese is one of 718 local languages in Indonesia facing degradation since national and international language influences are getting stronger in the country. Bali is relatively in a better position than the others because it is supported by its speakers, the governmental laws and costumery laws, and by its own script. This article examines the form of local laws on Balinese language and its script, the implementation of the local laws on Balinese language and its script usage, and factors that determine unparallel law of language between the Balinese Provincial Government and the national government. Observation and questionnaires were applied in the data collection method, while descriptive-qualitative technique was used for the analysis. Both were guided by Language Engineering and Forensic Linguistics approaches. The article concludes that Balinese speakers and the Provincial Government work hand in hand to develop the language and its scripts

Abstract

The Minangkabau people are known as a community whose social behavior is still governed by traditional values. These values have a significant impact on how people communicate with one another. Some of the most commonly used values are the use of proper language based on “kato nan ampek,” or four words. The value of “kato nan ampek” means that the Minangkabau people have a four-level system of communication. These traditional values are inseparable from the culture of the Minangkabau people. This way of communicating is applied to all aspects of life, including the medical environment. In this medical environment, language is used in the context of power and intensity of encounters, so that the communication that takes place will influence meaning, respect, and other values that may arise.  This study analyzes linguistic politeness strategies in the medical environment and relates them to Minangkabau cultural identity. Data analysis is explained in terms of Leech's (1983) Politeness Principle and integrated with the branch of intercultural pragmatics, which views politeness as a culturally specific practice rather than a general linguistic phenomenon. This study employs a qualitative research design combining naturalistic observation and thematic discourse analysis to examine interactions between health workers and patients in hospitals in Padang city. The results of the study show that communication among the Minangkabau people in the medical environment is characterized by a strong tendency toward indirect requests, softened commands, and inclusive pronouns, as well as the use of polite forms of address such as “Bapak and Ibu” (Sir and Ma'am). This tendency shows respect and social balance, which can reduce tension between health workers and patients who are consciously not in the same position. The principle of politeness in interactions between health workers and patients in the Minangkabau environment is not only a communicative approach but also one that emphasizes harmonious relationships, relational balance, and ethical considerations. Based on the approach outlined in this communication, the study proposes a new strategy for analyzing the so-called Contextual Medical Politeness Principle (CMPP). CMPP is a development of a previous theory that proves that politeness in medical interactions cannot be separated from the influence of culture and community identity. This principle of politeness is not only a strategy to reduce the risk of losing face, but can also be used as a moral and relational activity rooted in cultural knowledge. This study contributes to the science of linguistic politeness in relation to ethnolinguistics and the moral philosophy of the Minangkabau people. This study shows that the Minangkabau people's communication style is rooted in a regional context that conflicts with the dominant Western paradigm. This study presents a unique pragmatic model of Minangkabau politeness, demonstrating that it is not merely a regional or cultural phenomenon but a broader pragmatic model with implications for comparative research in linguistic politeness, health communication, and sociocultural linguistics in multilingual societies.

Abstract

This study describes the lexicon on woven bamboo in Tigawasa Village, Buleleng in an ecolinguistic perspective. The purpose of this study is to classify the lexicon on woven bamboo in Tigawasa Village and describe the existence of the lexicon. The method used to examine this research is qualitative with ecolinguistic theory. The results of the study found that there was a decrease in the level of knowledge of some people, especially the younger generation about the woven bamboo lexicon in Tigawasa Village. The percentage of the presence of this lexicon is higher indicated by seniors. This is due to 1) changes in the environment and economic activities 2) the process of transmitting the lexicon from the elderly or parents is still lacking due to the influence of the times 3) The use of Balinese and Indonesian languages.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the use of existential presupposition in the comment section of the Instagram account @jakarta.keras on a post concerning the corruption case of PT Pertamina Patra Niaga dated February 25, 2025. This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach from a pragmatic perspective. The data consist of utterances in the comment section that contain assumptions regarding the existence of particular entities. Data were collected using the observational method with the non-participatory observation technique, while data analysis was conducted using the pragmatic equivalent method through the Determining Element Sorting (Pilah Unsur Penentu/PUP) technique. The results indicate that existential presuppositions appear in various forms, which are classified into four categories: individual-based, group-based, social status–based, and ownership-relation–based existential presuppositions. These presuppositions are constructed through the use of definite noun phrases, proper names, plural forms, social status markers, and possessive markers. The findings demonstrate that Instagram comment sections function not only as a medium for expressing opinions but also as a space for constructing assumptions about the existence, identity, and social relations of actors involved in an event.
