Abstract

This study aims to analyze the politeness strategies employed by teachers during the learning process at the Bilingual Community School. Teacher communication in the classroom is significantly influenced by the use of polite utterances, especially in a bilingual setting where both linguistic and cultural differences shape the dynamics of interaction. This research uses a qualitative method, with data collected through direct observation and audio recordings of teacher utterances during classroom activities. The subjects of the study were reception class teachers actively engaged in bilingual instruction. The findings identified 12 teacher utterances applying various politeness strategies, such as positive politeness, negative politeness, bald on-record, and off-record strategies. These strategies were not used arbitrarily but were adapted to align with learning objectives, classroom management goals, and situational context. The study highlights how politeness strategies enhance teacher-student rapport, classroom engagement, and the overall effectiveness of communication in a multilingual educational environment, providing insight for educators in similar contexts.

Abstract

This study investigates the complexity of contextual meaning in political texts posted by public figures on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter). Grounded in Halliday and Hasan’s theory of situational context and Searle’s speech act theory, the research analyzes how political utterances function through locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary acts. The data, drawn from tweets during the 2024 Indonesian presidential election period, were collected using documentation and structured observation methods. The findings indicate that political texts on X are highly layered, combining explicit facts with implicit criticism, ideological stance, and persuasive strategies. Through representative, expressive, and directive speech acts, public figures construct meaning that influences public perception, evokes emotional responses, and fosters political alignment. This study contributes to the understanding of digital political discourse by highlighting how pragmatic strategies shape the interpretation of meaning in online political communication.

Abstract

The rise of social media has significantly transformed public discourse. It allows individuals to engage in political discussions, express opinions, and challenge governmental narratives. Unlike traditional media, social media platforms facilitate interactive and participatory engagement. Users can respond to official statements in real time. This study examines user comments on Kompas Facebook post regarding the Indonesian government’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic. Analyzing the discourse within these comments, the research explores functions of social media as a platform for democratization, power resistance, two-way communication, and alternative discourse formation. This study employs qualitative content analysis and critical discourse analysis (CDA). It is used to categorize and interpret user comments. The data included diverse linguistic strategies such as support, criticism, sarcasm, rhetorical questions, and religious expressions. Those were systematically coded to identify emerging themes. The findings reveal that social media enables democratic participation. It is also characterized by polarization of discourse and performative engagement. The interaction between government narratives and user responses demonstrates that social media facilitates counter public discourse, ideological contestation, and user-driven political deliberation. The study concludes social media that serves as a dynamic space for political communication where institutional narratives are actively contested. However, the limited presence of constructive suggestions highlights the challenges of fostering substantive policy discussions in digital spaces. By bridging discourse analysis, media studies, and political communication, this research provides a novel contribution to understanding digital discourse dynamics in contemporary political engagement.

Abstract

This article discusses the analysis of morphological aspects, particularly word formation, utilized in tourism terminology. The author discovered numerous new terms emerging in the realm of creative tourism, particularly tailored for tourists. This evolution is spurred by the proliferation of diverse forms of tourism, arising from the desire to break free from the monotony of daily routines. The study revealed that these novel terms can be classified into blending and compounding types. These formations are increasingly ingrained in the minds of tourists and the local community, making them commonplace in the lexicon of creative tourism. This linguistic variation is heavily influenced by the evolving demands of tourists. Basically, the new word formations consist of combining two words to signify novel meanings aligned with the requirements of contemporary creative tourism.

Abstract

Smartphones are becoming more ingrained in daily life, and the way they are marketed on platforms like YouTube will continue to shape societal attitudes toward technology, progress, and consumerism. This study explores the formation of myths and ideologies in smartphone advertisements from YouTube, utilizing semiotic analysis as its primary framework. The study focuses on two specific smartphone ads from YouTube: the Oppo Reno 12 campaign titled "Unbox The Future," and the Vivo Y28 campaign emphasizing "Endless Battery Life." The study utilizes Barthes' levels of meaning, along with insights from Eco and Lakoff, to reveal the ways in which smartphone advertisements construct and propagate narratives of progress, innovation, and technological superiority, all while embedding these messages within broader ideological and cultural implications of digital marketing in shaping consumer perceptions and behaviours. It calls for further investigation into the long-term cultural impacts of these advertising strategies and their role in reinforcing or challenging existing social norms and values in our increasingly digitized world. In doing so, this study not only contributes to the field of semiotics but also provides a critical lens through which we can examine the cultural power of digital advertising.
