Abstract

This study aims to analyze (1) the students' capability to master Japanese vocabulary at the basic level of class B-2 before and after applying the picture and picture method; (2) the effectiveness of the picture and picture method that influences the advancement of students' Japanese vocabulary mastery. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method conducted on 20 students at LPK Terayoka Bali. In line with that, the data collection techniques were tests, questionnaires, and observations. The test was delivered twice, namely a pre-action evaluation and a conclusive test after the treatment. Data collection was maintained through questionnaires distributed after administering the test and observing the class process during treatment delivery. The results revealed that the picture and picture method could enhance students' Japanese vocabulary mastery of nouns, adjectives, and verbs. Moreover, the students' average scores attainment of the pre-action evaluation compared to the final test after treatment can confirm the students' ability enhancement. The total average score of students based on the results of the pre-action evaluation is 35.8, advancing the conclusive evaluation outcome after treatment to an average score of 81. The low outputs of student pre-action evaluations were caused by learning methods applications that were not under the students' learning needs in mastering the vocabulary of nouns, adjectives, and verbs. In addition, the picture and picture method application in the learning process influences the increasing students' ability to master Japanese vocabulary effectively, which is also in line with the response to the questionnaire regarding the external and internal factors. The external factor is the application of learning methods with less encouragement, and internal factors are related to students' learning motivation to be more active in mastering Japanese vocabulary.

Abstract

This study reports the implementation of ICT-based learning materials using Blendspace in phonology classes. The ICT-based learning material was developed in the academic year of 2016/2017. The study was conducted in two stages. The rst stage was the validation of the teaching material by two expert judges. The second stage was trying out of the teaching material in the classroom using classroom action research. The learning material developed has been validated by experts using a checklist as an instrument, which has been analysed using the Gregory formula. The expert judges showed that the content validity of the learning material is 90.9%, which means very valid. In order to test the effectiveness of the learning material, it has been implemented in phonology classes joined by the second-semester Diploma III students of the English Department of Universitas Pendidikan Ganesha, using classroom action research. Based on the teaching and learning process using the material, more than 70% of the students obtained scores between 76 and 100. Fewer than 30% of the students had scores below 75. Therefore, the learning material is considered effective for learning phonology.

Abstract

Emotion is a natural aspect of human life, including that of individuals with Cerebral Palsy or CP. Generally, emotion can be triggered by situational factors and expressed through language, particularly through prosody. However, studies that explicitly link emotion, CP, and prosody remain limited. Therefore, this research aimed to identify the types of emotions experienced by Mike, a character with CP in theTriumph movie, as well as their prosodic performances. The research data consisted of Mike’s utterances and facial expressions, which were analyzed qualitatively using observation and documentation methods, along with note-taking and triangulation technique. The theories used were psycholinguistic, affective priming, and prosodic, that was also supported by Praat software. The findings showed that the emotions expressed by Mike included happiness (the most dominant), sadness, anger, surprise (the least frequent), and fear, which were triggered by social support or rejection from people around him. From a prosodic perspective, intonation and loudness exhibited contrasting patterns, resulting in varying degrees of word stress. Happiness was characterized by a pitch of 155.31 Hz and an intensity of 58.78 dB, sadness by a lower pitch of 148.54 Hz and the lowest intensity at 53.89 dB, anger by the highest pitch at 280.7 Hz and the strongest intensity at 62.47 dB, surprise by a pitch of 196.3 Hz and an intensity of 56.38 dB, and fear by a pitch of 161.03 Hz with an intensity of 57.97 dB.In sum, the results indicated a strong interrelationship between emotion and prosody in Mike’s speech.

Abstract

This article investigates the effectiveness of cooperative learning using vocabulary flashcards in improving students’ mastery of English adjectives. The research was conducted due to students’ limited vocabulary knowledge. The objective of this article was to examine whether the implementation of a cooperative learning model supported by vocabulary flashcards could enhance students’ adjective mastery and learning engagement. A pre-experimental research design with a one-group pretest–posttest approach was employed. The participants consisted of 15 junior high school students enrolled in an English course. Data were collected through pretest, posttest, classroom observation, and a student response questionnaire. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and N-Gain analysis, while qualitative data were obtained from observation sheets and questionnaire responses. The findings indicate a noticeable improvement in students’ posttest scores compared to their pretest results, with the mean N-Gain score categorized as moderately effective. In addition, observation data revealed high levels of student participation during cooperative learning activities. Questionnaire results further showed positive student responses toward the use of cooperative learning and vocabulary flashcards, particularly in terms of motivation, confidence, and ease of understanding English adjectives. These findings suggest that cooperative learning combined with vocabulary flashcards can effectively support students’ vocabulary development and active engagement. In conclusion, the study provides empirical evidence that cooperative learning facilitates meaningful interaction and knowledge construction, supporting its implementation in English vocabulary instruction. However, future research is recommended to involve larger samples and comparative research designs to strengthen the generalizability of the findings.

Abstract

In recent years, the Freedom to Learn and Freedom Campus (MBKM) initiative have been vigorously implemented. These include activities such as internships and student exchanges. While the Freedom to Learn program must be welcomed, it is important to note that some forms of this program are not entirely new, as student exchanges have been conducted at the high school level before. This article outlines the Student Exchange Program (PPS) through the biographical account of a legendary educator from Bali, Wayan Djiwa Duarsa, who founded and led State Teacher Education School (SPGN) Denpasar for 27 years (1959-1986). Data was collected through interviews, focused group discussions, and document studies. The analysis results indicate that in the early 1980s, Djiwa Duarsa pioneered the Student Exchange Program across Java and Bali, aiming to broaden the understanding of the archipelagic values among students and instill a sense of nationalism. In addition to the monumental PPS program, Djiwa Duarsa's biography also depicts the history of SPGN in Bali and its achievements at the national level. This article is expected to contribute to providing an initial study on the history of teacher education in Bali, which is useful for improving the quality of education for the progress of the nation.

Abstract

Mental clause, as a grammatical realization used to express experience of ourconsciousness of the world, is commonly found in the text of meditation. This type of text iswritten to persuade people to act in a particular way as suggested by the speaker or writer. Thisresearch is aimed at exploring how the mental clause in Indonesian text is re-contextualized toconvey the same meaning in English. The source language text is a text of meditation entitledButir-Butir Kebijaksanaan: Titian Hidup Sehat dengan Meditasi Bio-Energi Ratu Bagus (IdaPandita Mpu Nabe Parama Daksa Natha Ratu Bagus, 2012) and the target language text is itstranslation entitled Pearls of Wisdom: The Path of a Healthy Life with Ratu Bagus Bio-EnergyMeditation (Stacey, 2014). Knowing that translation is re-contextualization (House, 2015) andusing Systemic Functional Linguistics (Halliday & Matthiessen, 2014) and translation strategies(Malone, 1988) as the main theories, this study focuses on the directions of the translation of themental clause from Indonesian into English and on the translation strategies leading to thedirections. The research result shows that the mental clause of the Indonesian text can berendered into various clause types, including mental clause and non-mental clause. It can also berendered into a form of nominalization. The strategies which condition the directions include thestrategies of equation, reordering, diffusion and condensation.

Abstract

Broca’s aphasic patients display language problems in initiating utterances withgroping movements, multiple false attempts and self-correction resulting from a lesion to thethird frontal convolution of the left hemisphere of the brain. This study describes the forms ofsound impairment, types of errors and phonetic processing by a Balinese patient who sufferedfrom non-fluent speech disorder. The results showed that KW’s speech performance wascategorized severe. There were 0.80% phonological errors in word naming, 0.92% in picturenaming, 0.87% in answering questions and 0.89% in oral reading. Of the three other types oferrors, sound substitution errors mostly appeared in every phonological task. He made 65%sound substitutions, 20% sound distortions, 10% sound insertions and 5% omissions. Differentspeech stimulation could trigger sound inconsistency. The phonological errors occurred becausethere was not any appropriate coordination between phonological representation and phoneticrealization due to the loss of linguistic message in Broca’s area.

Abstract

The L1 influence causes difficulties for Dayaknese-speaking leaners (hereinafterreferred to as learners) of English in producing English sounds. In English, pronunciation playsimportant role to understand the communication. The purposes of learning English pronunciationfor learners are (1) able to communicate in English clearly and intelligibly, (2) able to get themeaning of information conveyed in real life situations, (3) able to improve self-confidencewhile communicating oral English, and (4) able to monitor the use of English (able to listen, understand, and produce). The teaching of English subject in Indonesian schools includes fourskills, namely listening, speaking, reading, and writing. While linguistic elements, such asvocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and cultural patterns of discourse are the supporters ofthese four skills. This current research aimed to describe the implementation of behaviorism learning method andcommunicative approach as an attempt to improve English pronunciation for learners. Thiscurrent research was conducted by means of Research and Development (R & D) design, employing the stages as follows: analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation.Testing was done with experiment, which compares the effectiveness between the old(conventional) learning method and the new method (behaviorism learning method with acommunicative approach). The indicators of the effectiveness of new method were the speed ofthe learners’ understanding, the learners’ creativity, and the learners’ learning outcomes.Experiment was carried out by comparing with previous condition and after using a new learningmethod (before-after) or also called one group pretest-posttest. Based on statistical count, t count= -34.37 and t table = 1.67, the value of t count falls on Ha acceptance area (new learningmethod was more effective than conventional learning method) or Ha was accepted and Ho wasrejected.

Abstract

Verbalizers (VBLZ) are morphemes which create verbs from other word types such as the noun, adjective, and other verb. This study traces, characterizes, and formulated the VBLZ of the Toba Batak Language (TBL). The data was the written and spoken form of the Toba language. The analysis was designed in qualitative descriptive and is ordered according to the focuses of the study of (1) lists of the VBLZ, (2) the way the VBLZ created verbs, and (3) the classification of the VBLZ. There are 3 findings in this study. Firstly, there are 5 VBLZ in the TBL; mar-, maN-, pa-, -on, and -i. The VBLZ created verbs directly and indirectly which determined the VBLZ into the first and second. Furthermore, the VBLZ are classified according to the impacts in creating verbs into primary VBLZ (the affixes of aspects of verb pa-, -on, and -i), and secondary VBLZ of mar- and maN-.
