Abstract

The objective of this study is to examine the structure of mangrove vegetation on Dompak Island and develop sustainable management strategies. The research employs a descriptive approach with purposive sampling as the sampling technique. Research instruments include a hygrometer, raffia rope, location map, hand refractometer, roll meter, hand counter, and identification book. Additional materials used are tissue, an oven, GPS, 70% alcohol, rope, plastic bags, analytical scales, a camera, distilled water, aluminum foil, a multi-tester, mangrove data, and a refractometer. The study identified six mangrove species on Dompak Island: Avicennia marina, Rhizophora apiculata, Rhizophora mucronata, Rhizophora stylosa, Sonneratia alba, and Ceriops tagal. Among these, Rhizophora apiculata was the most abundant, with 68 individuals at the tree level, 18 at the sapling level, and 19 at the seedling level. Based on SWOT analysis, the recommended strategy for managing Dompak Island’s mangroves is conservation-focused. This includes protecting the ecosystem, prohibiting destructive activities such as deforestation, and implementing regulations for local communities to ensure the sustainability of mangrove forests. In conclusion, the mangrove vegetation structure on Dompak Island, Tanjungpinang City, remains diverse and well-preserved.

Abstract

The coastal area of Muara Angke in North Jakarta is facing increasingly serious environmental pressures due to the destruction of its mangrove ecosystem. Mangrove forests, which previously served as natural protection against ocean waves, abrasion, and tidal flooding, are now experiencing significant degradation. This phenomenon occurs in tandem with human activities such as reclamation, land conversion, and pollution. This research aims to examine in-depth the impact of mangrove destruction on coastal settlements and assess the extent to which implemented adaptation strategies can mitigate ecological and social risks. A qualitative approach with a case study design was used in this research. Data were obtained through direct field observations, interviews with the community and stakeholders, and a review of supporting documents. The analysis was conducted using a combination of descriptive techniques and evaluative instruments such as SWOT, IFAS, and EFAS to identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats facing the coastal area due to mangrove ecosystem degradation. The results show that mangrove destruction has a significant impact on the environmental quality of coastal communities, primarily through increased tidal flooding, abrasion, and decreased marine catches. Mitigation strategies implemented, such as the construction of stilt houses and the development of silvofishery areas, have not been fully successful due to a lack of community involvement and weak oversight. Therefore, a more participatory, integrated, and sustainability-oriented approach is needed to improve environmental conditions while enhancing the socio-economic resilience of Muara Angke residents.

Abstract

Mangrove and coastal ecosystems play a critical role in enhancing coastal resilience; however, their effectiveness strongly depends on governance arrangements and management strategies. This study applies a qualitative comparative case study approach integrating a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) and field observations to compare mangrove and coastal ecosystem management strategies in Padang City (Indonesia) and Port Dickson (Malaysia). A structured comparative framework was used to assess biophysical conditions, governance structures, monitoring capacity, community participation, and contributions to ecological, institutional, and social resilience. The results indicate that Padang City possesses larger mangrove extent and higher species diversity, supporting stronger ecological and social resilience, but is constrained by fragmented governance and weak enforcement. Port Dickson exhibits smaller and fragmented mangrove areas with clearer institutional authority and periodic monitoring, yet limited social–ecological integration. The findings highlight that effective coastal resilience requires integrating strong regulatory frameworks, community engagement, and consistent long-term monitoring.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meneliti penggunaan pendekatan ekosistem dalam pengelolaan daerah pesisir terpadu (Integrated Coastal Zone Management/ICZM) di beberapa lokasi di Indonesia melalui metode Systematic Literature Review dengan pendekatan PRISMA. Analisis dilakukan terhadap publikasi ilmiah selama sepuluh tahun terakhir yang mengulas penerapan ICZM pada ekosistem pesisir, termasuk mangrove, padang lamun, dan terumbu karang di wilayah pesisir Indonesia. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pendekatan ekosistem dalam ICZM memiliki peran penting dalam mempertahankan keseimbangan fungsi ekologis, sosial, dan ekonomi di kawasan pesisir. Penerapan ICZM yang melibatkan pemerintah, masyarakat, dan institusi akademis terbukti meningkatkan kesadaran akan lingkungan, memperkuat kapasitas kelembagaan lokal, serta mendorong kegiatan konservasi yang berbasis komunitas. Namun, pelaksanaan ICZM masih menghadapi berbagai tantangan, seperti tekanan dari aktivitas manusia, kerusakan lingkungan, dan kurangnya koordinasi di antara lembaga-lembaga terkait. Untuk mengatasi tantangan ini, diperlukan langkah-langkah strategis seperti memperkuat kebijakan antar sektor, meningkatkan kemampuan masyarakat, mengembangkan sistem informasi spasial, serta melakukan pemantauan ekosistem secara berkelanjutan. Secara umum, penerapan ICZM yang berfokus pada ekosistem di Indonesia memberikan kontribusi terhadap perlindungan lingkungan pesisir, peningkatan kesejahteraan masyarakat, serta pencapaian Tujuan Pembangunan Berkelanjutan (SDGs), khususnya terkait dengan kehidupan bawah air (SDGs 14) dan pengentasan kemiskinan (SDGs 1). Kata kunci: ICZM, pendekatan ekosistem, pengelolaan pesisir, konservasi, Indonesia.

Abstract

Mangrove ecosystems are an important component of coastal areas that have strategic ecological functions, including acting as natural coastal protection from abrasion, providing habitat and seeds for fisheries, and absorbing carbon that plays a role in mitigating climate change. However, the existence of mangrove ecosystems in various coastal areas of Indonesia, including Pariaman City, faces serious pressure due to human activities and weak coastal area governance. The problem formulation in this study includes the factors causing problems in the mangrove ecosystem in Pariaman City and how the central role of coastal area governance can strengthen the ecological function of mangroves as coastal protection, providing seeds for fisheries, and absorbing carbon. This study aims to analyze the role of management and protection of coastal ecosystems, especially mangrove forests, in the governance of the coastal area of ​​Pariaman City. The research methodology uses a literature review method with a descriptive analysis approach, which examines 15 selected articles. The results of the study indicate partial to significant degradation of mangrove areas due to land conversion, reclamation, logging, and industrial and household pollution. Human pressures such as shrimp pond expansion, coastal infrastructure development, and land reclamation also exacerbate abrasion and reduce the productivity of the mangrove ecosystem. On the other hand, mangroves have significant potential as an instrument for climate change adaptation and mitigation through increasing blue carbon and coastal rehabilitation. Therefore, this study emphasizes the importance of community-based governance policies, mangrove restoration programs, and cross-sector partnerships to maintain the sustainability of Pariaman City's coastal ecosystem.

Abstract

Keberadaan alat tangkap bagan apung yang pada awalnya untuk meningkatkan hasil tangkap nelayan di selingkar Danau Singkarak, saat ini mengakibatkan ikan bilih yang berukuran kecil sebesar rinuak (2-3 cm) tertangkap karena banyaknya penggunaan bagan apung dengan bahan jaring ukuran < 5/8 inci. Penambahan bagan apung yang terus meningkat setiap tahunnya dapat menimbulkan dampak negatif terhadap populasi kelestarian ikan bilih (Mystacoleucus padangensis) di Danau Singkarak. Penelitian ini dilakukan di Danau Singkarak Provinsi Sumatera Barat pada bulan Juli hingga September 2022 meliputi Nagari Simawang, Nagari Batu Taba, Nagari Sumpu, Nagari Padang Laweh Malalo di Kabupaten Tanah Tadar dan Nagari Kacang dan Nagari Singkarak di Kabupaten Solok. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk : menganalisa dan dampak penggunaan bagan apung terhadap kelestarian ikan bilih (Mystacoleucus padangensis) di perairan Danau Singkarak. Metode pengumpulan data yaitu observasi, analisis visual, studi pustaka, dan interview (individual atau grup). Hasil yang didapatkan dari penelitian adalah (1) penggunaan alat tangkap bagan apung ini perlu di batasi dan diatur sebaik mungkin untuk mencegah terjadinya ekploitasi penangkapan ikan bilih dan tekanan terhadap populasi ikan bilih secara berlebihan sehingga dapat mengancam kelestariannya; (2) Sebaiknya bagan apung yang digunakan mempunyai ukuran mata jaring minimal 1,0 inci; (3) Diperlukan aturan yang mencegah penempatan bagan apung di daerah kawasan muara sungai, dimana daerah tersebut merupakan jalur ikan bilih buat memijah; (4) Sebaiknya pemerintah provinsi menetapkan kawasan konservasi ikan bilih di perairan Danau Singkarak, karena selama ini belum ada kawasan yang dicadangkan khusus untuk perlindungan ikan bilih sebagai ikan endemik di perairan Danau Singkarak.

Abstract

Crabs are a member of the mangrove ecosystem fauna and get their food source from litter. They turn the litter into detritus and maintain ecological balance. In addition, environmental conditions in the mangrove ecosystem also play an essential role in the abundance of brachyuran crabs. Influential environmental factors include temperature, salinity, water pH, and substrate type. This study aims to determine the effect of environment types on the presence of brachyuran crabs from families Ocypodidae and Sesarmidae in the mangrove ecosystem in Gemuruh River, Koto XI Tarusan District. The method used is a descriptive method, which is a direct observation approach to crabs and environmental conditions in the mangrove ecosystem area. Collection of crab samples and environmental condition data used a purposive sampling technique. The result shows six species distributed in the area, namely Uca bellator, U. rosea, Perisesarma eumolpe, Sarmatium germaini, P. plicatum, and Sesarma curoense. The distribution of species crabs in vegetation mangroves is Rhizophora stylosa, R. apiculata, R. mucronata, Sonneratia alba, and Nypa fruticans. The environmental parameters (temperature, salinity, water pH) at each station were within the relatively good category for the growth of the Ocypodidae and Sesarmidae crab families. Based on the analysis results of the relationship between the abundance of brachyuran crabs and environmental parameters (temperature, salinity, water pH), it can be seen that there is no significant correlation between temperature, salinity, and water pH with the abundance of Ocypodidae and Sesarmidae brachyuran crabs families in the mangrove ecosystem of Gemuruh River. Abstract

Upaya menyeimbangkan eksploitasi ikan dengan kesehatan laut dilakukan pemerintah Indonesia melalui kebijakan Penangkapan Ikan Terukur (PIT) yang berbasis pada pembagian zona dan jatah tangkapan. Selain mengawasi pemanfaatan ikan agar tidak berlebihan, kebijakan ini juga menargetkan pemerataan ekonomi lokal. Penelitian ini mengevaluasi sejauh mana nelayan di Pelabuhan Perikanan Samudera (PPS) Bungus memahami dan menerima kebijakan PIT tersebut. Data dikumpulkan dari 74 nelayan di PPS Bungus menggunakan instrumen wawancara dan kuesioner dalam kerangka metode deskriptif. Untuk mengevaluasi persepsi mereka, digunakan skala Likert, sementara penentuan arah strategi manajemen perikanan dilakukan lewat analisis SWOT.  Berdasarkan hasil studi, mayoritas nelayan menilai kesiapan mereka melalui indikator ketersediaan alat tangkap, jumlah ikan di laut, penggunaan BBM, dan pemahaman regulasi. Walaupun mekanisme kuota dan pengawasan pemerintah disambut baik, kebijakan mengenai kewajiban transmitter dan perombakan sistem perizinan masih menghadapi hambatan berupa resistensi dari nelayan. Pentingnya keterlibatan nelayan secara partisipatif dalam implementasi PIT menjadi poin utama temuan ini, di mana pertimbangan terhadap situasi sosial-ekonomi serta peningkatan dukungan teknis dan sosialisasi sangat diperlukan. Pilihan strategi pengelolaan jatuh pada kategori agresif di Kuadran I, di mana fokus utamanya adalah penegakan regulasi untuk memaksimalkan sistem pengawasan berbasis teknologi dan perluasan sosialisasi. Pendekatan ini bertujuan agar kebijakan PIT di PPS Bungus berjalan efektif demi menjamin keberlanjutan sumber daya laut.
