Abstract

Abstract. Saputra FR, Wahid I, Supriyono, Hadi UK. 2025. Abundance of adult Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus (Diptera: Culicidae) across six settlements in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 26: 509-519. Aedes aegypti and Ae. albopictus are major vectors of dengue, chikungunya, and Zika. These diseases impose a significant global health burden, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions where environmental conditions favor mosquito population growth and disease transmission. This study aimed to analyze the abundance of adult Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus across six settlements in South Sulawesi Province, Indonesia. Mosquito collections were conducted from January to October 2023. The selected settlements were Manuju, Pangembang, Tamala’lang, Adatongeng, Lae-Lae, and Panaikang. The findings indicated that Ae. aegypti was predominantly found indoors in Lae-Lae, with a total of 696 individuals (58.7%) from 100 surveyed houses, while Ae. albopictus was mostly found indoors in Pangembang, with 31 individuals (55.4%). Outdoors, Ae. aegypti was most abundant in Lae-Lae, where 32 individuals (80.0%) were captured in vegetated areas around 100 surveyed houses, such as near bamboo trees and other vegetation surrounding the settlements Similarly, Ae. albopictus was more frequently found outdoors in the same area, with 177 individuals (33.1%) captured under similar conditions. In total, Ae. aegypti was primarily found indoors, with 1186 individuals (p<0.01), while Ae. albopictus was mainly found outdoors, with 535 individuals (p<0.001). These findings reveal significant differences in the abundance of these mosquito species between indoors and outdoors, highlighting the influence of local environmental factors on their distribution in South Sulawesi Province, Indonesia.

Abstract

Abstract. Khuzaimah H, Afiff U, Hadi UK,  Soviana S, Supriyono. 2026. Tick morphology and pathogen-carrying potential in dogs from Bogor, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 27 (1): d270122. https://doi.org/10.13057/biodiv/d270122. Rhipicephalus sanguineus is a hard tick ectoparasite that usually infects dogs and acts as a potential vector for zoonotic pathogens such as Lyme disease, Ehrlichiosis, Babesiosis, and Rocky Mountain fever, which are commonly transmitted to humans and animals by ticks. This study aimed to detect pathogenic bacteria, such as Anaplasma spp., Rickettsia spp., and Borrelia spp., in ticks collected from dogs in Bogor. A total of 77 dogs were randomly examined from 217 dogs, and 142 ticks were collected from six dogs, with a prevalence rate of 7.29%. Tick identification showed that all ticks were R. sanguineus according to Anastos' identification key (1950). R. sanguineus has specific characteristics, such as spurs on its first coxae and hexagonal basis capitula. The tick samples were then extracted for DNA to detect pathogenic bacteria using polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The results based on the 17-kDa and gltA genes showed that one sample tested positive for Rickettsia sp., and the infection rate for Rickettsia spp. was 12/142 ticks (0.085%). This was closely related to Rickettsia felis, which was detected in an infested dog in Saint Kitts and Nevis. Based on the groEL gene, one positive Anaplasma sp. sample had an infection rate of 94/142 ticks (0.66%). It was closely related to Anaplasma platys, which was detected in China, based on the phylogenetic tree. Meanwhile, the flaB gene detection for Borrelia spp. yielded negative results in all tick samples, but related research has successfully detected Borrelia in R. sanguineus. These findings provide molecular evidence of R. sanguineus as a potential vector for Rickettsia and Anaplasma in Indonesia. Maintaining environmental hygiene and pet cleanliness is essential for tick control and the prevention of zoonotic transmission.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the species diversity, density, and their distribution and analyze mosquito larvae' habitat's physicochemical characteristics in the Dramaga sub-district, Bogor Regency rice fields.. This research used purposive sampling method by taking samples from 92 breeding site in four villages of Dramaga district. The physicochemical characteristics of larval habitats, including pH, temperature, Total Dissolve Solid (TDS), and Electrical Conductivity (EC) were measured in the field. Breeding site are marked using a Garmin Montana 680 GPS for further processing. Larvae were collected and identified until species level. The result showed Anopheles vagus, An. barbirostris, An. indefinitus, Culex. vishnui, Cx. fuscocephala, Cx. tritaeniorhynchus, Cx. sitiens, Cx. hutchinsoni, and Armigeres sp. were found in the rice fields of Dramaga district. The highest diversity and density of larvae was found in Cikarawang Village. The highest relative abundance of mosquitoes larvae were An. vagus and Cx. vishnui. The physicochemical characteristics of larval habitats such as pH, TDS, and EC, had no correlation with the larval abundance, however the temperature of larval habitat had a negative correlation between temperature and larval density.

Abstract

Fluralaner is a new molecular entity from the isoxazoline class that exhibits acaricidal and insecticidal activity and it is recommended as an anti-ticks drugs. The aim of this study is to analyze the effect of fluralaner against dog infested by tick. A total of 10 dogs weighing about 20-40 kg which consists of various races, were divided into control groups with-out medication (n=2), and treatment group (n=8) received fluralaner tablets once by orally, at a dose of 25 mg / kg body weight. The results showed that based on observation of day of drug application at 24th hour was the time where the drug reaches the standard of efficacy with decrease number of the tick by 97.3%. In 28 and 56 days post treatment were the highest levels of efficacy with a decrease number of tick reaching 100%. The efficacy of the fluralaner was still very high until 84 days post treatment reached up to 94.1%. This study also proved that 12 weeks of drug work believed to overcome reinfestation of the tick. The rapid tick-killing effect and the long duration of efficacy showed the potency fluralaner to aid in the prevention of tick borne diseases.
