Abstract

Soybean is becoming a prominent agricultural industry due to its versatility of use as inputs for different industrial sectors. Soybean products have a high value and are profitable since its huge supply and wide demand. The soybean economic value does belong to the commercial use of its joint products, soybean meal, and soybean oil. Joint product theory assumes the price of soybeans can be represented as a weighted average of returns from soybean meal and soybean oil less than the processing margin. This indicates there are price relationships between soybean as a raw product towards its meal and oil through crush processing. Therefore, the objective of this research is to investigate the price transmission between these three products and analyzed factors that influencing them. Monthly time series data in respect of international prices were obtained. Augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) test and the Johansen cointegration technique were utilized to test the stationarity and the long-run relationship between three variables respectively. The result indicates the existence of one cointegrating long-run equilibrium relationship between these variables. The Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) estimates revealed that soybean price is the only one that reacts to correct equilibrium since oil and meal have huge markets. Abstract

Background: Production and the number of smallholder rubber farmers in Muaro Jambi Regency have decreased over the past ten years. The decrease in production and the number of rubber farmers are believed to be caused by a decrease in the labor allocation in rubber plantations. Rubber farmers now focus on more than just one commodity, and farmers have diversified their income resources, such as oil palm plantations and off-farm work. As a result, household economic decisions will be related to labor allocation. Purpose: This study aims to analyze the labor allocation in rubber farmer households and identify the factors influencing labor allocation in rubber plantations in the Muaro Jambi Regency.Design/methodology/approach: This research used primary data from one hundred rubber households using a multistage random sampling method. The estimation was done in two steps: in the first step, shadow wages were estimated using the production function to get the value marginal product of labor, and in the second step, the instrumental variable method was used to determine the factors influencing labor allocation in rubber plantations. Findings/Results: The estimation shows that shadow wages, oil palm labor allocation, and non-rubber income significantly influence rubber labor allocation. This result indicates that the existence of oil palm plantations does not cause a decrease in rubber labor allocation, and shadow wages can be a determining factor in labor allocation. Originality/value (State of the art): This study focuses on how rubber farmer households allocate their labor across rubber plantations, other farms, and off-farm work in the context of the presence of other commodities, particularly oil palm, which is developing alongside rubber in the research area. The results show how farmers make decisions regarding their rubber plantations, switch to oil palm, or do off-farm work, which is the reason why they began reducing labor allocation to their rubber farms. Abstract

Broiler chicken farms that have developed successfully in the world, such as Charoen Pokphand in Thailand and its branches in other countries, are large-scale and vertically integrated businesses. So that the farm is able to achieve economies of scale. On the contrary, most broiler chicken farms in Indonesia are run on a small scale. Under government policy, small-scale broiler chicken farms cooperate with large companies in partnerships. This study aims to identify economies of scale in partnered broiler chicken farms in Indonesia. This study used secondary data of 228 partner farmer units from the 2014 Livestock Business Household Survey by the Indonesian Central Statistics Agency. The analysis used two approach methods, namely statistically descriptive and linear regression models. The results showed that the partnered broiler chicken farms experienced economies of scale, where the production cost per unit is significantly cheaper on an increasingly large business scale. This shows that the government needs to collaborate with broiler chicken companies to implement a livestock group-based partnership model for small-scale farmers to be able to achieve economies of scale.

Abstract

Abstract

The policy objective of government purchase price (harga pembelian pemerintah – HPP) of plantation white sugar in Indonesia is to increase the production. However, while the government increase the HPP, the production was decreased. The purpose of this study was to analize the impact of HPP policy on production of plantation white sugar in Indonesia. This study uses ex-post simulation based on econometrics model (build from monthly time series data from 2012 until 2017, consist of 13 equations and estimated using 2SLS method). The result shows that an increase in  HPP causes an increase in plantation white sugar production. However, an increase in labor wages cause decreased in production. The increase HPP also causes an increase in producer surplus. Based on producer surplus, the biggest impact of the increase in HPP was felt by the farmers.

Abstract

Abstract

Insurance literacy plays a crucial role in expanding farmers' access to insurance. Lack of understanding of insurance products and inability to process information prevent farmers from making the right decisions, which leads to low levels of insurance participation. This study aims to analyze the level of knowledge, attitudes, and behavior of farmers towards insurance and examine the factors that influence farmers' insurance literacy. Data were collected directly from 94 farmer households in four sub-districts in Aceh Besar Regency. This study measured farmers' insurance literacy using a questionnaire and then conducted a regression analysis using the ordinary least squares (OLS) method on variables suspected of influencing insurance literacy. The results of this study indicate that farmers' insurance literacy is sufficient literate. Variables such as gender, age, education level, and main occupation significantly affect farmers' understanding of insurance. The average scores of farmers' knowledge, attitudes, and practices towards insurance were 42.23, 71.36, and 46.28, respectively. Education has a significant impact on farmers' knowledge of insurance. This study suggests that the government and other stakeholders can carry out promotional activities, socialization and training periodically to increase insurance knowledge and awareness.
