Abstract

Accurate and reliable relative humidity forecasting is important when evaluating the impacts of climate change on humans and ecosystems. However, the complex interactions among geophysical parameters are challenging and may result in inaccurate weather forecasting. This study combines long short-term memory (LSTM) and extreme learning machines (ELM) to create a hybrid model-based forecasting technique to predict relative humidity to improve the accuracy of forecasts. Detailed experiments with univariate and multivariate problems were conducted, and the results show that LSTM-ELM and ELM-LSTM have the lowest MAE and RMSE results compared to stand-alone LSTM and ELM for the univariate problem. In addition, LSTM-ELM and ELM-LSTM result in lower computation time than stand-alone LSTM. The experiment results demonstrate that the proposed hybrid models outperform the comparative methods in relative humidity forecasting. We employed the recursive feature elimination (RFE) method and showed that dewpoint temperature, temperature, and wind speed are the factors that most affect relative humidity. A higher dewpoint temperature indicates more air moisture, equating to high relative humidity. Humidity levels also rise as the temperature rises.

Abstract

Purpose: This study evaluated the effectiveness of 'Tunggal Dara,' an Android-based system, in optimizing dengue surveillance in Semarang, Indonesia, using the Modified Consolidated Framework of Implementation Research (mCFIR). Methods: This explanatory mixed-method study utilized an online mCFIR questionnaire to measure performance and importance scores across five domains and two sub-domains. Perspectives of 46 epidemiologists and 167 community health workers (CHWs) were included. Focus group discussions, key-informant interviews with relevant stakeholders at the local-national level, field observations, and application log analysis were also conducted. Descriptive and thematic analyses were performed to provide insights into its fidelity, penetration, and sustainability. Results: In 2022, the weekly participation rate remained stable, ranging from 76.3-97.7% for village-level CHWs and 100% for epidemiologists, indicating strong program sustainability. However, cadres and epidemiologists rated performance support from the outer setting domain as the lowest, recognizing its potential impact when executed properly. Three major themes emerged as facilitators: solid community engagement, high users’ demand and commitment, and collaboration opportunities. Four key barriers were discovered: integration and interoperability challenges, data input quality and standardization issues, variations in end-user characteristics, and limited involvement of local stakeholders. Conclusion: This study has the potential to contribute significantly to the field of dengue surveillance in Indonesia and beyond, providing valuable insights into the benefits and limitations of adopting digital innovations to combat this persistent public health threat.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to determine the effect of functional egg administration on changes in nutritional status, protein intake, and babies born. Methods: A study analytical with a cross-sectional design that was seen retrospectively. In-depth interviews were conducted with key informants and supporters to support research data. Results: Analysis found that consumption of functional eggs was not statistically related to nutritional status, weight, and length of the child's body but was descriptively related. Functional egg consumption is associated with increased energy and protein intake with p values 0.005 and 0.011 (p <0.05). There was an increase in body weight, MUAC, and nutritional status of chronic energy deficiency (CED) pregnant women becoming NON-CED, thereby reducing the birth of LBW and LBL. Conclusions: Functional eggs are not used as additional food; they become the mother's central protein intake. There is a need to increase commitment among organizers, implementers, and targets in implementing programs to break the stunting chain.

Abstract

Determining the cause of death (CoD) is crucial for effective health policy and decision-making, particularly in population health programs. The World Health Organization (WHO) developed the Verbal Autopsy (VA) tool to ascertain CoD through verbal information, particularly in countries lacking comprehensive vital registration systems. In Indonesia, the health landscape is shifting from communicable diseases to non-communicable diseases (NCDs), highlighting the need for updated mortality surveillance. This study aimed to determine the major causes of death among adult mortality in Sleman Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS) Indonesia. A demographic surveillance system was employed to monitor vital events, including mortality, with verbal autopsy interviews conducted for each death. A total of 279 adult deaths (ages 15 years and older) from the first two cycles of surveillance were analyzed. Trained enumerators conducted verbal autopsy interviews with informants close to the deceased. The InterVA program was used to process the verbal autopsy data, identifying the CoD for 274 adult deaths. Descriptive analysis was performed to determine the proportion of each cause of death, and Chi-square tests were used to assess differences in proportions. The findings revealed that 68.2% (95% CI: 62.38–73.72) of deaths were due to NCDs, including stroke, heart disease, diabetes, asthma, and chronic liver disease. Infectious diseases accounted for 24.8% (95% CI: 19.82–30.37), while injuries (primarily accidents) contributed to 6.6% (95% CI: 3.94–10.18). Stroke was the leading cause of death, particularly in individuals aged 50–64 years (21.2%, 95% CI: 16.48–26.49), followed by acute respiratory infections, including pneumonia (10.6%, 95% CI: 7.2–14.85). The study concluded that NCDs, particularly stroke, are the leading causes of adult mortality in Sleman HDSS, with significant contributions from acute respiratory infections and injuries. It is recommended for future research to further develop Verbal Autopsy technology, such as AI-based applications that can improve the accuracy of determining the cause of death.
