Abstract

Abstract. Higher order thinking skill (HOTS) is the demanded skill in 21st century that one needs to possess in order to be able to compete in the advanced era. The aim of this case study is to investigate the teachers’ beliefs in HOTS integration in the teaching of reading comprehension as well as how the beliefs are applied in the practices of teaching reading by doing a qualitative study in a case-study design. A semi-structured interview and classroom observations were used to obtain the data. The results indicated that the teachers shared strong beliefs about the concept of HOTS and its components. The concept includes how they defined HOTS. In addition, the components revealed how they comprehend analyzing (C4), evaluating (C5), and creating (C6). Practically, the teachers' beliefs were not fully reflected, particularly in the question and assignment they assigned to students that indicated LOTS. This ivestigation suggests that more teachers’ professional development is required to promote the success of HOTS incorporation into teaching reading comprehension, mainly during online learning due to pandemic.Keywords: Higher Order Thinking Skill, HOTS, Reading Comprehension, Teachers’ Beliefs,   integration

Abstract

This activity is carried out to provide understanding to teachers related to independent learning planning. Apart from that, to train teachers in making lesson plans using the context in the surrounding environment. The environmental context can be used for the learning process to understand more real concepts or subject matter. The method used is lecture, question and answer and practice. The result of this service activity is an understanding related to the preparation of independent learning learning plans for middle school teachers in Pagar Alam, South Sumatra using the existing context in the environment. Apart from that, all training participants can show a good response and improve teacher professionalism.

Abstract

This study aimed at developing a dynamic teaching-learning process by integrating the millennial drama performance-based-textbook on “siti zubaidah” to improve students learning outcomes. The research design in this study was development research that covered the phases of analysis, design, evaluation, and revision. The data were collected through questionnaires, validity tests, and the effectiveness of the developed millennial drama performance based-textbook on “siti zubaidah” from South Sumatra through stages designed according to Akker models. The data were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. To determine its validity, practicality and potential effect of the product, a formative evaluation was conducted. The validity of the developed product was 4 (high validity). The product was evaluated in experts’ review related to instructional design and content. The practicality of the developed reading materials was evaluated in one to one evaluation (4.16), categorized into high category and small group evaluation (4.44) which categorized as very high practicality. In field test, the result was 90% which the developed product was regarded as a high potential effect. The millennial drama performance-based-textbook on “siti zubaidah” was potential to be applied for undergraduate EFL students because it became a basic reference to improve the students’ drama performance. Moreover, the textbook gave the students insight into one of the local cultures in Palembang, Sumatra Selatan.

Abstract

The specification of the materials taught is one of the characteristics of teaching English at vocational high school. The materials should be appropriately designed or developed for the students to enhance their comprehension and to facilitate subject matter. The aim of this research is to look into students' needs for developing English reading materials based on Palembang culture, as determined by the feedback of students and teacher. Through a questionnaire and interview, the data were obtained. The data was quantitatively and qualitatively analysed. The results of the study revealed that 1) students are still experiencing some difficulty in reading comprehension, 2) a recount text is necessary; 3) English reading materials need to be integrated with students' local culture; and 4) no English reading material has been made available to incorporate the students' local culture, particularly in the field of tourism destination of Palembang. Due to needs, reading materials must be developed through the integration of local culture that matches the level of reading and supports the content of the topics.

Abstract

The use of English textbook does not only become a guide to the teachers when delivering the materials, but also presents necessary input through various explanations and activities. On the side of the learners, it also influences their attitudes and performance to the materials. This phenomenon challenges the writer to conduct research-based article concerning textbook evaluation to analyze the tasks and the distribution (simple to complex) of tasks presented in English textbook used in senior high school. The findings show that the English textbook entitled Bahasa Inggris SMA/MA/SMK/MAK Kelas X Semester 1 has interesting tasks which meet the objectives in curriculum 2013 and a good distribution of tasks across chapters and the whole book.

Abstract

The purposes of this study was to find out the validity, practicality, and potential effect of the developed instructional reading materials using Siti Zubaidah narrative lyrics as a local culture-based narrative texts from South Sumatra. The method of the research used development study. The subjects of the study were tenth grade students whose instructional reading level was level four. The procedure of the study consisted of three stages: analysis, design, evaluation and revision. In the first stage, instructional, students’ reading level, and their reading needs were analyzed. The data collected by using questionnaire and test. The result of the analyses became the basis of product development. Texts with comprehension questions were written. Formative evaluation was conducted to see the validity, practicality, and potential effects of the product. The validity about the content and construct of the product was evaluated in expert review phase. The product was stated to be very highly valid (4.45). The practicality was evaluated in one-to-one and small group phases. The results showed that the product was very highly practical since the average score in both phases were 4.64 and 4.79 respectively. Field test phase aimed to evaluate the potential effect of the product. After being tried-out in the field test as 93.3% of the students achieved the minimum mastery criterion which was 68. It meant that this product had a very high potential effect. In conclusion, the developed product was potentially effective to be applied for the tenth grade students.

Abstract

This study was aimed at finding out the implicatures, the types of the implicatures, and the intended meaning of the implicatures employed by the characters in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. This study was a descriptive qualitative study with corpus-based approach. The data were collected through some procedures, namely reading the novel repeatedly and thoroughly, determining the utterances containing implicatures in dialogues based on the relevance theory, and selecting and organizing the data to be analyzed. To analyze the data, the procedures were presenting and describing the data,  interpreting the data by referring to the relevance theory, determining the implicated premises and implicated conclusions, determining the strongly implicated conclusions and weakly implicated conclusions, and interpreting and describing the intended meanings of the implicatures. From the results, there were 60 implicatures found in the novel and the two types of them were strong and weak implicatures. As the follow-up, a dissemination to the second semester students of Graduate Program of Sriwijaya University was conducted which yielded to the result that there was no significant association between the respondents’ knowledge of implicatures and relevance theory and their performance in analyzing implicatures using the theory with the p-value of 0.406 (p-value > 0.05).

Abstract

Rapid progress in science and technology is a hallmark of the globalized era. To stay up with the demands of the industry in the 4.0 era, it is important to consider both traditional classroom learning and social and virtual forms of learning. This research aims to discover, with the support of Palembang's vocational high school students and teachers, what kinds of reading material will best meet the demands of those pupils concerning procedure texts informed by the culture of that city. The author conducted an interview and a questionnaire to acquire data. Quantitative and qualitative assessments of the information were made. It was found that students needed English for their future careers, that they were not interested in reading because their English language skills were at a beginning level, that texts about general knowledge were relevant, that texts about Palembang's local culture were crucial as topics in reading comprehension, that texts about procedures where needed, and that reading materials about Palembang's local culture were not easily obtainable. Students in Palembang needed exposure to local culture, specifically Palembang's traditional dishes; 8) A mobile app for Android was needed to facilitate education. The assignment asked students to combine local Palembang culture with their English skills to produce a set of instructions using an Android app; this work could be useful in the students' professional lives in the future.

Abstract

This research intends to dig out the Senior High School students' needs in English reading materials development based on climate change material revised by students', and teachers' views. The data were obtained by applying a questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. The data are described both quantitatively and qualitatively. The outcomes of the need analysis represent that: 1) English is important to students' future careers, (2) students’ English proficiency is at the beginner level, 3) students still get some hardship in writing skills, 4) the type of text needed is an exposition text, 5) it has connected between English reading materials and the content subject materials, 6) students still run short of awareness about climate change material, 7) There is still the limitation of climate change as the English reading materials, 8) two major causes for connecting climate change material into educational materials are to increase the awareness of students. As a consequence of the needs, it is important to develop supplementary exposition reading materials by connecting climate change which fit the students’ English proficiency and can help out their study program.

Abstract

ABSTRAKRPP adalah rancangan pembelajaran yang pengembangannya memicu sebuah Kompetensi Dasar (KD) terentu didalam sebuah kurikulum atau silabus. RPP dirancang mengikuti sebuah pedoman guru dalam mengajar sehingga kegiatan pembelajaran berlangsung menjadi lebih  terarah, sesuai dengan KD yang telah ada. Jenis pengabdian ini adalah deskriftif kualitatif. Para guru masih mengalami kesulitan Ketika dihadapkan dalam pembuatan Rancangan Pembelajaran pada Kurikulum Merdeka Belajar. Tujuan dari pengabdian ini menghasilkan RPP Merdeka Belajar yang akan meningkatkan kemampuan para guru dalam merancang RPP berbasis Merdeka belajar. Kegiatan ini dilakukan kepada seluruh guru Matematika Sekolah Menengah Atas (SMA) di Pagaralam, Sumatra Selatan. Metode pengabdian berupa sosialisasi melalui zoom meeting. Pada pengabdian ini menghasilkan RPP Merdeka Belajar dari para guru serta respon guru dalam membuat RPP Merdeka Belajar. Serta guru memahami konteks yang digunakan dalam membuat RPP yang akan dikaitkan dengan mata pelajaran yang diajarkan. Kata kunci: RPP; pengabdian; kompetensi dasar (KD) ABSTRACTRPP is a learning design whose development triggers a certain Basic Competence (KD) in a curriculum or syllabus. RPP is designed to follow a teacher's guideline in teaching so that learning activities take place more directed, in accordance with the existing KD. This type of devotion is qualitative descriptive. The formulation of the problem in this service is to produce a lesson plan lesson plan to train teachers to make an independent learning lesson plan. The purpose of this service is to produce RPP Merdeka Learning. This activity was carried out for all high school mathematics teachers in Pagaralam, South Sumatra. The method of service is in the form of socialization through zoom meetings. In this service, it produces RPP Merdeka Learning from the teachers as well as the teacher's response in making RPP Merdeka Learn. As well as the teacher understands the context used in making lesson plans that will be linked to the subjects being taught. Keywords: RPP; devotion; basic competencies
