Abstract

Increases in air temperature indicate a global climate change. Thus, information in the change of temperature regional scale is important to support global data. The present research was conducted in Gifu city and Ogaki city located in Gifu prefecture, Japan. The results showed that, average air temperatures in both cities are quite similar with a difference value of under 1oC. Maximum air temperature in Gifu city is significantly higher than Ogaki city, whereas minimum air temperature in Gifu city is significantly lower than in Ogaki city. Daily range of air temperature in Gifu city significantly higher than in Ogaki city. In both cities, air temperature relatively increased in three decades. This is because of different in land characteristics in both cities.

Abstract

Forest plays an important role to support a global environment. Currently, forest degradation occurs in developing countries. Therefore, the excellent strategies to against the forest degradation must be found. One of the best solutions is understanding the information of vegetation condition. Here, the objective of this paper was to apply a method as the assessment of vegetation monitoring using satellite data in the integration of conservation education forest at great forest Wan Abdul Rachman in Lampung Province, Indonesia. In this study, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) was used, completed with satellite data (namely MODIS). This technique helps in monitoring vegetation status. Data NDVI from MODIS satellite data showed that forest area decrease very small from 2000-2017. The data was obtained for June, July, and the end of September.

Abstract

This study analyzed the functions of shifting (phenomenon of legal pluralism) and identified forest conversion at Production Forest Management Unit of Dharmasraya (PFMU Dharmasraya), West Sumatra, Indonesia from March 2018 to December 2019 using a qualitative research design with a case study approach. The identification of changes in forest cover analyzed by satellite images using the NDVI method to obtain the distribution of forest cover. Discussion on legal pluralism were examined using a non-ethnographic qualitative research approach through interviews with local communities, companies/permit holders, and related institutions (government). From 2000 to 2019, the PFMU Dharmasraya forest area reduced from 86 to 12%, and plantations increased from 10 to 81% of the total area of 33,539 ha. The legal pluralism of forest ownership occurs because local communities use traditional law, claiming the PFMU Dharmasraya area as Ulayat land. In contrast, the government claims the forest belongs to the state. The motives for the conversion of forest functions are the expansion of oil palm and rubber plantations, forest clearing to mark forest ownership rights, and illegal logging.

Abstract

Indonesia as an agricultural country produces and consumes a huge amount of fruits. One of the popular fruits is durian (Durio zibethinus), which can create issues with the high amount of durian seeds. Durian seeds can be fermented quickly. Thus, if they are not processed immediately, it causes pollution to the environment, particularly an odor issue. One of the waste management is to convert durian seed waste into biochar, an ameliorant agent to improve soil quality. This study aims to analyze the physicochemical properties of durian seed-derived biochar under different pyrolysis temperatures. The results showed that the increases in the temperature allowed the creation of more porosity in the biochars, which is due to chemical structure and crystallinity arrangement. This is confirmed by the increases in surface area and total pore volume also decreases in particle size. The change in the chemical structure can be verified by the decreases in the biochar yield. The produced biochar from fruit seeds has excellent carbon content and elemental components such as potassium, magnesium, phosphor, and sulfur, informing prospective fruit seeds as a soil amendment fertilizer

Abstract

Household activities and beverage industries that use tamarind often generate waste in the form of tamarind seeds. Tamarind seeds account for approximately 40% of the total weight of the fruit. If these tamarind seeds are not properly managed, they end up as waste with no economic or other benefits. One effective waste management strategy is to convert tamarind seeds into biochar. This research aims to examine the characteristics of biochar produced from tamarind seeds at different pyrolysis temperatures. The results indicate that as the pyrolysis temperature increases, the fixed carbon content also increases. Pores begin to form on the surface of the biochar at a temperature of 400°C. We have identified functional groups such as C-H, O-H, C≡N, C≡C, C=C, C=O, CH3, C-O, and C-C in the biochar. The dominant elements in tamarind seed biochar are K2O, CaO, P2O5, SO3, and MgO, which are part of macronutrients and alkaline elements with the potential to improve soil quality as soil amendments.
