Abstract

Plant extracts have become an intriguing subject of research in the search for effectiveantimicrobial agents against Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA), which is a global health issue due to its resistance to various antibiotics. Several studies have shown that compounds such as alkaloids and polyphenols in plants are responsible for their antimicrobial properties. Extracts from plants such as Azadirachta indica, Psidium guajava, and Rhamnus californica have demonstrated antibacterial activity against MRSA. Other research indicates that compounds like Psorothatin C from Psorothamnus fremontii are also effective against MRSA. The main challenge in managing MRSA infections is resistance to conventional antibiotics like vancomycin. Therefore, further research on plant extracts and synthetic compounds with antimicrobial activity against MRSA could provide significant contributions to the development of new therapies. Approaches involving the combination of plant extracts with conventional antibiotics also show potential in enhancing treatment effectiveness. A deep understanding of the mechanisms of action of these plant extracts is crucial for developing effective treatment strategies, and with further research, plant extracts could become an important alternative in addressing MRSA infections that are resistant to antibiotics.

Abstract

Introduction: Hyperuricemia is a significant risk factor for the development of chronic kidney disease. Excessive uric acid can deposit in the kidneys, triggering inflammatory reactions and oxidative stress, leading to structural damage in the glomeruli. Black garlic, with its antioxidant and bioactive compounds, has the potential to protect the kidneys from hyperuricemia-induced damage. Our objective is to evaluate the effect of black garlic supplementation on the histopathological features of glomeruli in a hyperuricemic rat model. Methods: This study was an analytical observational study using Biological Remnant Materials (BRM) from a previous study. The sample consisted of 30 male Sprague-Dawley rats divided into 5 groups: disease control, drug control (allopurinol), and 3 black garlic dose groups (240 mg/day, 480 mg/day, and 960 mg/day). Data were collected through histopathological examination of kidney tissue using the glomerular damage scoring method (0-3). Data analysis was performed using one-way ANOVA and post hoc LSD tests. Results: Black garlic demonstrated protective effects on the histopathological features of glomeruli in hyperuricemic rats. The 240 mg/day dose showed the most significant improvement in kidney health, reducing glomerular damage scores compared to the disease control group (p < 0.05). These findings suggest that black garlic can serve as a preventive agent against kidney complications caused by hyperuricemia. Conclusion: Black garlic provides protective effects on glomerular histopathology in hyperuricemic rats, with the 240 mg/day dose being the most effective. These results suggest potential use for black garlic in preventing kidney complications in hyperuricemia.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between blood pressure and blood sugar levels, and how age and gender moderate the relationship. The study involved 105 respondents who underwent health check-ups in Banyumas Regency. Blood pressure was categorized as normal or hypertension, while blood sugar levels were divided into normal, prediabetes, and diabetes. The Chi-Square test showed a significant association between blood pressure and blood sugar levels (p < 0.05), although the strength of the association was relatively weak. Individuals with hypertension have a higher risk of developing blood sugar disorders, especially in women and individuals over 45 years old. Ordinal regression analysis showed that age and gender played an important role in influencing this association. These findings emphasize the importance of an integrated approach in screening and management of hypertension and diabetes, to prevent long-term complications such as cardiovascular disease and renal failure. The practical implications of this study can be used to design more effective public health programs

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the relationship between body weight, height, body mass index (BMI), and blood glucose levels among 105 study subjects . Descriptive analysis results show that the average body weight of subjects is 64.81 kg, height is 1.62 m, and blood glucose level is 107.05 mg/dl, with significant variation in glucose levels. Scatter plots indicate that blood glucose does not have a significant relationship with body weight and height, while there is a tendency for increased blood glucose levels with increasing BMI. Correlation analysis reveals a strong positive relationship between body weight and BMI, but blood glucose does not show significant relationships with other variables. Using quantile regression, the analysis shows no significant relationship between independent variables and blood glucose at the median quantile. These findings highlight the need for further research to understand the factors influencing blood glucose levels and the importance of comprehensive assessment of anthropometric parameters.

Abstract

Periodontal pathogens Porphyromonas gingivalis and Fusobacterium nucleatum develop a biofilm on the surface of the dental apex, causing inflammation in the teeth' supporting tissues. Asystasia gangetica has been observed for its analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial effect. The ethanolic extract of A. gangetica may be developed as a root canal sterilization dressing due to its benefits. This study aims to determine the inhibitory effect of ethanolic extract of A. agangetica on P. gingivalis and F. nucleatum from forming biofilm. Antibacterial activity was determined using Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion. The inhibition of biofilm formation was evaluated using microtiter plate biofilm assay with various concentrations of extract. Base on the classification of inhibition zone, ethanolic extract of A. gangetica had moderate to strong antibacterial effects on P. gingivalis at 12.5-50 mg/mL, and moderate effect on F. nucleatum at 25-50 mg/mL. Results also showed that the extract at 50 mg/mL, inhibited biofilm formation by more than 72% against P. gingivalis (p<0.05) and up to 75% against F. nucleatum (p<0.05). The value of MBIC50 was determined at 5.19 mg/mL and 7.44 mg/mL, respectively. Ethanolic extract of Asystasia gangetica has a potential inhibitory effect on P. gingivalis and F. nucleatum biofilm formation. Studies suggest more detailed approaches to a better understanding of the interactions between lead compounds and bacterial cells within the biofilm structure.

Abstract

Antimicrobial resistance in pathogens such as Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus poses an urgent global health challenge. Honeybee propolis is known for its promising antibacterial potential. This study aimed to compare the antibacterial effectiveness of propolis against E. coli (Gram-negative) and S. aureus (Gram-positive) using the in vitro disk diffusion method. Propolis was tested at concentrations of 6.25%, 12.5%, 25%, 50%, and 100% against both bacterial species. Disk diffusion assays were conducted on Mueller Hinton Agar, and inhibition zones were measured using a vernier caliper. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA. The results showed the Inhibition zone diameters increased with higher propolis concentrations. At 100% concentration, S. aureus showed a 15 mm inhibition zone, while E. coli showed only 7 mm. One-way ANOVA indicated significant differences (p < 0.05) in both bacteria. These findings indicate that propolis exhibits antibacterial activity against both S. aureus and E. coli, with greater effectiveness against Gram-positive S. aureus. These findings support the potential use of propolis as a natural antibacterial agent, particularly for Gram-positive infections.
