Abstract

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model integrated with teacher feedback in improving students’ understanding of the topic of trigonometry in right triangles. Due to students’ difficulties in comprehending the abstract nature of right triangle trigonometry and memorizing formulas, an innovative learning model is required to facilitate their understanding. This model also provides opportunities for students to practice problem-solving skills in real-life contexts, fostering critical thinking abilities. The results indicate that the PBL model, combined with teacher feedback during the learning process, produced better outcomes, as evidenced by cognitive test measurements. The experimental method used in this study was a one-group pre-test post-test design conducted quantitatively. Data were collected from a population of Grade X students at a high school in Serang City. The study employed test instruments consisting of multiple-choice and essay questions for data collection, which were analyzed using the non parametric paired sample t-test method. The analysis showed a significant improvement in the average scores, with post-test scores being higher than pre-test scores. It can be concluded that the implementation of the Problem-Based Learning model, integrated with teacher feedback, effectively enhances students’ understanding of the topic.

Abstract

Mathematics, a core subject in schools, is crucial for developing logical and systematic thinking skills. One fundamental concept is place value, which helps students understand the position and value of digits in numbers. Proper understanding of place value is essential for learning more complex mathematical concepts like addition, subtraction, decimal operations, and fractions. However, many students often experience misconceptions about this concept, such as misinterpreting the value of digits. These misconceptions can lead to errors in more complex number operations and reduce students' confidence in their mathematical abilities. This study uses a qualitative method with a descriptive approach to systematically describe specific objects. Data collection techniques include interviews, observations, and documentation. Based on observations and interviews, it was found that students who experienced careless errors were 13%, concept errors were 9%, and a combination of both types of errors was 9%. Additionally, 6% of students experienced an inability to think mathematically or other learning disorders. Effective educational interventions, such as implementing constructivist learning, can reduce the likelihood of misconceptions. In conclusion, place value is the foundation of learning mathematics, and misconceptions in this area can have significant negative impacts on students. Teachers need to conduct deeper analyses and prepare better strategies to address these misconceptions.

Abstract

Background: In today's ever-changing landscape, students need strong numerical literacy skills to navigate life's complexities. Recognizing that students come with various learning capabilities, often referred to as "instructional levels," educators must think outside the box when it comes to teaching methods.Aim: This study aims to 1) gauge whether creative problem solving (CPS) or scientific learning is more effective in enhancing the numerical literacy skills of MA students; 2) assess the difference in the numerical literacy progress among MA students categorized at independent, instructional, and frustration levels; and 3) explore the interplay between teaching methods and instructional levels on students’ numerical literacy development.Method: Conducted as an experimental study, this research employs a 3x2 factorial design. Participants include students from Class X IPA at MAN 2 Serang. To collect data, we used tests focused on numerical literacy as well as assessments to categorize instructional levels. A two-way ANOVA serves as the statistical approach to test our hypotheses.Result: 1) MA students exposed to the CPS method showed greater improvements in their numerical literacy skills than those who engaged in scientific learning; 2) A noticeable variance exists in the growth of numerical literacy skills among MA students at independent, instructional, and frustration levels; 3) An interaction effect was identified between the chosen teaching method and the instructional level in shaping the numerical literacy skills of MA students. Conclusion: The study concludes that creative problem-solving is more potent than scientific learning in elevating the numerical literacy of MA students. Furthermore, instructional levels play a crucial role in this improvement. A synergistic effect between the teaching approach and instructional level was also found to influence the numerical literacy outcomes.

Abstract

Efforts to improve the quality of education continue to be carried out comprehensively, including aspects of knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values. Mathematics learning is understanding mathematical concepts when solving a problem. Therefore, whether or not mathematics learning has been achieved can be demonstrated if students can understand and master a given concept. This research aims to determine the increase in students' ability to understand concepts using teaching materials with a problem-based learning approach. This research used one class with 36 students. Data collection uses observation and tests. The pretest and posttest results show that the posttest results are better, namely having 10.417 points more than the pretest results. The results of the t-test analysis show a significance of 0.000. After being tested, it can be concluded that teaching materials using a problem-based learning approach are effective in improving students' ability to understand mathematical concepts.
