Abstract

Introduction: Based on data from the Indonesian Health Survey, the stunting rate in South Kalimantan Province in 2023 reached 24.7%. The target for reducing the national stunting rate in 2024 is 14%. Nutrition practitioner play a diverse and crucial role in handling stunting, from assessment and education to policy intervention and advocacy. This study aims to determine the effect of competence, appreciation and geographical proximity on the performance of nutrition practitioner with management span as a moderating variable in preventing stunting cases. Methods: This type of research is observational analytic with a cross-sectional design. The location of this research is at the Health Center in the working area of the South Kalimantan Provincial Health Office and the duration of the research is 2 months. The sample of this research is 280 respondents who were taken using the cluster sampling technique. The data collection method uses a questionnaire. Ethical approval was obtained from the Health Research Ethics Commission of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Lambung Mangkurat University with number No.067/KEPK-FKIK ULM/EC/V/2024 and participants signed the Informed Consent. Results: The findings show that geographical proximity (t = 0.658, p = 0.510) has no significant effect on TPG performance, indicating that the distance between program targets and TPG members does not influence outcomes. In contrast, competence (t = 5.404, p = 0.000), rewards (t = 3.766, p = 0.000), and management range (t = 2.577, p = 0.010) have a significant positive impact on performance, where higher competence and more frequent rewards lead to improved results. The results further demonstrate that management range strengthens the effect of both rewards (t = 3.872, p = 0.000) and competence (t = 3.549, p = 0.000) on performance, indicating that effective coordination enhances their impact. However, the interaction between management range and geographical proximity (t = 0.742, p = 0.458) is not significant, suggesting that distance does not moderate the influence of management range on performance. Conclusion: Competence and reward is the factor influencing performance, while geographical proximity do not show significant influence. Competence, rewards, geographical proximity, and management span simultaneously influence performance with a contribution of 71% (R² = 0.710). This finding suggests the need for organizations to focus on improving TPG competencies through continuous training, skill development, and knowledge enhancement. In addition, it is important to explore other factors outside the research model that may have a significant impact on performance, including intrinsic motivation and better work system support.

Abstract

Adolescents constitute a vulnerable demographic group susceptible to iron deficiency owing to heightened nutritional demands during their growth phase. These requirements persist until the onset of puberty. The considerable prevalence of anemia among adolescents may persist into adulthood if not effectively managed. Within the working area of the Puruk Cahu Puskesmas, 20.68% of junior high school students are afflicted with anemia. This study aims to scrutinize the correlation between protein, iron, vitamin C, folic acid, and vitamin B12 levels and anemia among junior high school students in the aforementioned locale. Employing an analytical observational approach with a cross-sectional design, the study sampled 102 individuals through purposive sampling. Data collection utilized a questionnaire. Independent variables encompassed protein, iron, vitamin C, folic acid, and vitamin B12. Bivariate analysis was conducted utilizing the chi-square method, with multivariate analysis employing multiple logistic regression. Findings unveiled significant associations between protein (p=0.009), iron (p=0.008), and vitamin B12 (p=0.026) levels and anemia, whereas no such correlation was found with vitamin C (p=0.196) and folic acid. Iron emerged as the most influential factor contributing to anemia among junior high school students (Exp(B)=8.747). Consequently, this underscores the imperative of addressing iron deficiency within this demographic to alleviate anemia prevalence.

Abstract

This study explores the effects of a comprehensive training program on the skills, knowledge, and motivation of Posyandu cadres in Guntung Manggis, Banjarbaru, Indonesia—a region with notably high maternal and infant mortality rates. The sample included 68 Posyandu cadres, divided equally into intervention and control groups. The intervention group underwent an interactive, hands-on training program, which led to significant improvements in knowledge and practical skills compared to the control group. Post-training, the intervention group’s mean skills score increased from 48.24 ± 6.47 to 74.15 ± 7.85, while the control group showed no significant change. These findings suggest that comprehensive training programs, which incorporate practical and interactive components, are more effective than traditional lecture-based methods in enhancing cadre competencies. It is recommended that health authorities consider adopting such training programs on a larger scale, particularly in high-need areas, as a strategy to improve maternal and child health outcomes and reduce maternal and infant mortality rates.

Abstract

Air pollution has a significant impact on lung health, especially for groups of workers who are directly exposed to pollution, such as traffic police. This study aims to evaluate the effect of air pollution on Malondialdehyde (MDA), Superoxide Dismutase (SOD), and lung function levels in traffic police in Banjarbaru City. The method used was observational analytic with a cross-sectional research design. This study involved two groups, namely traffic police and non-traffic police, with a purposive sampling technique. The subjects involved totaled 80 people, divided into 40 traffic police and 40 non-traffic police, with the criteria of traffic police who have worked for at least 5 years. Serum MDA and SOD levels and pulmonary function assessment using spirometry were performed in both groups. The results showed that MDA levels in traffic police were higher (184.75 ± 14.5 µM) compared to non-traffic police (178.4 ± 3.4 µM), while SOD levels in traffic police were lower (1.06 ± 0.384 units) compared to non-traffic police (1.22 ± 0.3 units). In addition, Forced Vital Capacity (FVC) and Forced Expiratory Volume in one second (FEV1) values in traffic police were lower, while the FEV1/FVC ratio showed no significant difference. Air pollution has a significant effect on increasing MDA, decreasing SOD, FVC, and FEV1 in traffic police. It is recommended to reduce air pollution exposure in this group through stricter pollution control policies and the use of respiratory protective equipment.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Patient compliance with preoperative fasting instructions is essential to prevent perioperative complications such as pulmonary aspiration, which can have a serious impact on patient safety during surgery. Several factors such as age, gender, education, and understanding of medical instructions are thought to play a role in patient compliance with preoperative fasting. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between these factors and patient compliance in a hospital in Banjarmasin. This study used a quantitative observational analytic design with a cross-sectional approach, involving 75 elective surgery patients selected based on inclusion criteria. Data were collected through interviews and questionnaires covering demographic information, education level, understanding of medical instructions, and compliance with pre-surgical fasting. Data were analysed using the Chi-Square test and logistic regression. The results showed that age (p = 0.377) and gender (p = 1.000) had no significant association with adherence to preoperative fasting. In contrast, there was a significant association between education (p = 0.001) and understanding of instructions (p = 0.000) with adherence. Patients with higher levels of education and good understanding of instructions tended to be more compliant than patients with basic education and poor understanding. Patients who had a good understanding of instructions were 29.96 times more likely to adhere to preoperative fasting compared to patients with poor understanding. Understanding of instructions is the most dominant factor in influencing patient compliance. The analysis showed a B coefficient of 3.599 with an OR of 36.556 (p-value = 0.000). This means that patients who have a good understanding of instructions are 36.5 times more likely to adhere to preoperative fasting compared to those with poor understanding. Good understanding significantly increased the likelihood of compliance, emphasising the importance of effective communication and clear education to patients about medical instructions. In conclusion, education and understanding of medical instructions are important factors associated with adherence to preoperative fasting. Meanwhile, age and gender showed no significant influence on adherence. Therefore, increased patient education and better understanding of medical instructions should be the focus of interventions to improve patient compliance, especially for those with lower education levels. Keywords: Adherence, Preoperative Fasting, Education, Understanding, Demographic Factors
