Abstract

This research aims at investigating the knowledge of ICT integration among the students of the English Language Education Study Program at a particular university in Yogyakarta. By employing the quantitative method, this ex-post facto research involved 70 English Department students who had taken microteaching as respondents in a survey to gather the data using a questionnaire. The questionnaire was taken from the model developed by one of the researchers based on the TPACK framework. There are five domains in the questionnaire. Four domains measure TPACK perceptions: Technological Knowledge (TK), Technological Content Knowledge (TCK), Technological Pedagogical Knowledge (TPK), and Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK). One domain measures the pre-service teachers’ perceptions of their ICT-related learning experiences. Demographic questions are included to identify the characteristics of the respondents in order to understand gender differences or relationships between teachers who have access to technologies at home and those who do not. The closed-ended questions applied a five-point Likert-type scale ranging from 1=strongly disagree to 5=strongly agree. Correspondingly, it contains one open-ended question in the TPACK domain. Descriptive analysis and MANOVA were conducted for the quantitative data analysis. The result of this study showed that the pre-service students possess a high self-confidence in the application of TK (Technological Knowledge), TPK (Technological Pedagogical Knowledge), and TCK (Technological Content Knowledge). However, their TPACK appears to need further development. The results from MANOVA showed that the pre-service teachers’ related learning experiences significantly differed by the students’ gender, with male students reporting more experiences than female students.

Abstract

The present study examines the relationships between the psycho-behavioral constructs underlying undergraduate students’ reading interest. The a priori framework for conceptualizing the sub-components of reading interest is based on two modes of reading (printed-text-based and also Internet-based), and three types of psycho-behavioral motives/intentions of reading (affective, cognitive, and behavioral). Participants in this study were students (M = 20.14 years old) from an Indonesian university (n = 993). Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses show the salience of 10 factors across reading modes and psycho-behavioral domains of reading. The most accept-able SEM models that explore the relationships among the sub-components of reading interest have the student reading interest in the print mode preceded interest in reading online materials. Implications of these findings are discussed for theory development and practice.

Abstract

Vocabulary is one of the language features that should be acquired by the students to support them learning other language skills. The students will be easier to receive or produce the English language if they remember the considerable words. After being observed in the actual classroom, however, most students seem difficult to acquire words. Moreover, the influence of using media such as Quizlet Application on vocabulary acquisition needed to be proved by involving large participants since that application was not widely used by EFL teachers in Indonesian educational context. The study aims to find out if there is any significant difference in the grade ten students’ vocabulary acquisition between those who use Quizlet Application (QA) and those who do not use it in learning vocabulary. The participants were 110 tenth-grade students in senior high school. Their vocabulary knowledge was assessed through pre-test and post-test conducted before and after the treatment was given. The research finding reveals that there was a significant difference in students’ vocabulary acquisition between those who used Quizlet Application and those who were taught using the conventional method in learning vocabulary. That finding was indicated by the value of significant which was below 0.05. Moreover, it is also found that QA was less effective on students’ vocabulary acquisition while the conventional method was not effective to students in obtaining words.

Abstract

Scholars have widely discussed meta-analysis studies on the theory of multiple intelligences. However, no research explicitly discusses the theory of multiple intelligences in the development of social science. This study determined the effectiveness of multiple intelligences on learning achievement in social studies. For this reason, researchers compiled a study that has been carried out to determine the effectiveness of multiple intelligences in meta-analysis. This study used a meta-analysis method. There are six articles used in the study based on the inclusion-exclusion criteria. The meta-analysis findings revealed that multiple learning intelligence had a modest and optimistic impact on students’ social science performance. This study also revealed the magnitude of the effect of multiple intelligence-based learning based on moderator variables at the level of education, treatment implementation time, and type of subject. The research findings provide suggestions for the development of research on multiple intelligence studies in the future.

Abstract

Background: The application of mobile learning (m-learning), especially in the area of language learning, has gained interest in the last several years due to the benefits offered by mobile devices. However, to maximize the effectiveness of m-learning, students are required to be ready. Thus, it is crucial to assess students’ readiness before implementing m-learning. By focusing on rural schools, this quantitative study aims to examine students’ readiness in implementing m-learning in their English language learning. Methodology: This study employed a survey design to measure m-learning readiness of senior high school students by investigating three factors, namely mobile self-efficacy, optimism, and self-directed learning. Through an online questionnaire, 140 responses were successfully collected from students in two public senior high schools (one high school and one vocational high school) located in a rural area in Soppeng, Indonesia. The data collected were subsequently analyzed using SPSS Statistics ver. 25. Findings: The results revealed that senior high school students from a rural area in Soppeng, Indonesia, had a high level of self-efficacy and optimism in implementing m-learning in their English language learning. However, their self-directed learning was still at a moderate level. Moreover, further analysis showed that type of school significantly affected students’ mobile self-efficacy and optimism, while self-directed learning was not affected. Conclusion: Students from rural senior high schools in Soppeng, Indonesia, showed readiness in implementing m-learning for English language learning purposes.

Abstract

Although extensive research has been carried out on university students’ online learning readiness, very little attention has been paid to online learning readiness of foreign language learners. Examining the learners' readiness get involved in online learning becomes more fundamental to conduct in this current Covid-19 pandemic since online learning is the only alternative to run educational programs at every level. This study set out to investigate the construct validity of a scale to measure EFL learners' readiness in online learning during covid-19 pandemic. The scale was construdted based on the theories underlying students readiness in online learning. Both exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were used to empirically validate the scale. A total of 682 undergraduate students from seven universities in Indonesia participated in the study by completing in the google form-based scale. The results of the study showed that the scale comprised of 24 items that converged into a five-latent factor with an acceptable fit. These results are expected to be a consideration basis in planning, implementing, and evaluating EFL online learning programs in the Indonesia context.

Abstract

Evidence suggests that autonomous language learning has been one of the primary areas of interest in the field of English Language Teaching due to its fundamental roles in empowering students in taking the responsibility for their learning both in and out of the classroom. This study set out to investigate the structural relationships among the dimensions of English student teacher perception towards their roles and strategies in promoting autonomous language learning and professional autonomy. A total of 357 student teachers of English from Indonesia participated in this study. Eligibility criteria required the participants to have taken courses on English Language Teaching Methodology to ensure their understanding about the concepts of autonomous language learning and their future roles and strategies in fostering and promoting autonomous language learning. Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) with MPlus 7.2 was used to test the models proposed in this study. The findings showed that the dimensions of student teacher roles and strategies in promoting autonomous language learning and professional autonomy were weakly to moderately related to one another, suggesting how teacher education institutions need to provide sufficient trainings on the concept and practice of autonomous language learning. Several noteworthy findings are summarized and discussed thoroughly in the discussion section.

Abstract

Despite the growing body of literature recognizing the importance of multicultural education in the 21st Century, little is known about the preservice English teachers’ (PSETs) multicultural disposition (MD) in the Indonesian setting. This survey study examined the Multicultural Dispositions Index (MDI) of PSETs. The 22 items of Thompson’s (2009a) MDI scales with four dimensions, i.e., cross-cultural competence, multicultural worldview, knowledge of professional and personal self, and professional skills and commitment, were adopted to explore the PSET MDI in this study. It was a nine-type self-report scale. The study involved 185 PSETs (aged 17–22 years; 146 females and 39 males) from one of well-established teacher education universities in Indonesia. A Confirmatory Factor Analysis was conducted to confirm the underlying MDI dimensions. The findings showed that the PSETs MDI was best represented by 18 items that emerged into the same four dimensions. It means the PSETs in Indonesia possess the four dimensions of multicultural dispositions, facilitating them to navigate school-level multicultural education. Four items from the original 22 items of MDI must be due to the cross-loading and low factor loading since the value was found to be more than 0.50. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that the MDI be revised when used in the Indonesian multicultural context.
