Abstract

The Education and Culture Ministry of Indonesia has just launched a newly-reformed national education system called the “Merdeka Belajar-Kampus Merdeka” (Freedom Campus-Freedom to Learn)” policy. One of the four hallmarks of the Merdeka Belajar-Kampus Merdeka policy is the three-semester off-campus internship program for university students. Despite the supports, there is still debate as to whether the program will be effective and pro-students when implemented. Apart from the policy’s pros and cons, the program needs to be objectively understood not only from the government’s and academics’ perspectives but also from the students’ whose voice is time and again marginalized when new policy is being planned, drafted, and implemented. Besides, there are still limited studies that deal with this issue. Therefore, further studies need to be conducted. This study investigates the students’ perception and optimism toward the off-campus internship program of the Kampus Merdeka-Merdeka Belajar policy. The probing questions about perceptions were related to whether the program wassatisfactory, overwhelming, inflicting, or simply industry-oriented instead of student-orientedaccording to the students. The probing questions about optimism were related to whether the students were optimistic that the program would bring improvementto their knowledge, skills, and pre-working experiences. Data was collected from 229 2nd and 4th semester students across departments in Mataram University by conducting online questionnaire. Results show that the students had a positive perception about the off-campus internship program (49%) and they were very optimistic that this program would be effective when implemented (71%).

Abstract

QuillBot is one of the online programs that can be utilized to enhance students’ writing skills. By integrating the paraphrasing tool QuillBot into the writing instruction, this study aimed to examine the effectiveness of QuillBot paraphraser on the students’ paraphrasing ability. Additionally, this study sought to find out the students' opinions on paraphrasing and on the use of QuillBot in paraphrasing. Adopting a mixed method with explanatory design, this study employed quasi-experimental research with a one group pretest posttest design. There were 44 fourth-semester students taking the Academic Writing course in the English study program at the University of Mataram participating in this study. The students’ paraphrasing ability was tested before and after the treatment with both manual paraphrasing instruction and QuillBot paraphrasing tool. While, the students’ opinions towards paraphrasing instruction integrating the QuillBot paraphrasing tool was discovered through questionnaire. Further, the collected data were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively to answer the predetermined research objectives. The results of t-test showed that there was a significant difference between the students’ paraphrasing ability before and after the treatment with significance value 0.000 lower than 0.05. In addition, most students responded positively to the integration of QuillBot in paraphrasing instruction, as it not only improved their literacy skills but also their motivation in learning paraphrasing in which the use of QuillBot paraphraser is simple, easy, instant and time-saving. This study highlights and confirms the potential of AI tools like QuillBot to enhance language instruction. Other reseachers might compare the efficacy of QuillBot paraphraser to other automatic paraphraser in writing instruction and use both questionnaire and interview to obtain more detailed information about the students’ attitudes or opinions.

Abstract

Subtitling has become a vital tool for disseminating ideas and information through online video. This study takes a deep dive into the translation strategies employed in the subtitling of the acclaimed Netflix documentary series “Our Planet.” Drawing on Gottlieb's established theory of translation techniques for subtitling, this research analyses the subtitling approaches within the episodes of the series. The findings reveal that the transfer strategy presenting direct lexical translation is the dominant approach (71%) used by subtitlers. However, the analysis also uncovers nuanced applications of other strategies, such as expansion, paraphrasing, and condensation, which work in tandem to enhance the clarity and naturalness of the target language subtitles. By examining this rich dataset of documentary video subtitles, this study provides valuable insights into the complex decision-making processes of professional subtitlers especially those that is related to cross-cultural comprehensio. The results suggest that while transfer is the primary technique, subtitlers thoughtfully employ a mix of strategies to deliver an optimal viewing experience to multilingual audiences. This study offers a groundbreaking exploration of the intricacies involved in translating educational and informative video content for global distribution.
