Abstract

Genomic repeats, i.e., pattern searching in the string processing process to find repeated base pairs in the order of Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA), requires a long processing time. This research builds a big-data computational model to look for patterns in strings by modifying and implementing the Boyer-Moore algorithm on Apache Spark Streaming for human DNA sequences from the Ensemble site. Moreover, we perform some experiments on cloud computing by varying different specifications of computer clusters with involving datasets of human DNA sequences. The results obtained show that the proposed computational model on Apache Spark Streaming is faster than standalone computing and parallel computing with multicore. Therefore, it can be stated that the main contribution in this research, which is to develop a computational model for reducing the computational costs, has been achieved.

Abstract

The handwriting is an object that can describe information about the author implicitly. For example, it is able to predict the gender. Recently, the gender prediction based on handwriting becomes an interesting research. Even in 2013, an competition for prediction gender from handwriting has been held by Kaggle. However, the accuracies of current approaches are relatively low. So, in this study, we attempt to implement Fuzzy Rule-Based Classification Systems (FRBCSs) for gender predictions from handwriting. Three stages are conducted to achieve the objective, as follows: defining some features based on Graphology Techniques (e.g., pressure, height, and margin on writing), collecting real datasets, processing on digital images (i.e., image segmentation, projection profiles, and margin calculation, etc.), and implementing FRBCSs. The implemented algorithm based on FRBCSs in this research is Chi’s Algorithm, which is a method based on Fuzzy Logic for classification tasks. Moreover, some experiments and analysis, involving 75 respondents consisting of 36 males and 39 females, have been done to validate the proposed model. From the simulations, the classification rate obtained is 76%. Besides improving the accuracy rate, the proposed model can provide an understandable model by utilizing fuzzy rule-based systems.

Abstract

Comparing the quality of basic reservoir rock properties is a common practice  to  locate  new  infill  or  development  wells  for  optimizing  oil  field development using reservoir simulation. The conventional technique employs a manual  trial-and-error  process  to  find  new  well  locations,  which  proves  to  be time-consuming, especially for large fields. Concerning this practical matter, an alternative in the form of a robust technique is introduced in order to reduce time and  effort  in  finding  new  well  locations  capable  of  producing  the  highest  oil recovery. The objective of this research was to apply a genetic algorithm (GA) for determining well locations using reservoir simulation, in order to avoid the conventional  manual  trial-and-error  method.  This  GA  involved  the  basic  rock properties,  i.e.  porosity,  permeability,  and  oil  saturation,  of  each  grid  block obtained from a reservoir simulation model, to which a newly generated fitness function was applied, formulated by translating common engineering  practice in reservoir  simulation  into  a  mathematical  equation  and  then  into  a  computer program. The maximum fitness value indicates the best grid location for a new well. In order to validate the proposed GA method and evaluate the performance of the program, two fields with different production profile characteristics were used, fields X and Y. The proposed method proved to be a robust and accurate method to find the best new well locations for oil field development. The key to the success of the proposed  GA method lies in the formulation of the objective functions.

Abstract

Abstract

This study explicitly discusses helping job seekers predict salaries and visualize job vacancies related to their future careers. Jobstreet Malaysia is an ideal platform for discovering jobs across the country. However, it is challenging to identify these jobs, which are organized according to their respective and specific courses. Therefore, the linear regression approach and visualization techniques were applied to overcome the problem. This approach can provide predicted salaries, which is useful as this enables job seekers to choose jobs more easily based on their salary expectations. The extracted Jobstreet data runs the pre-processing, develops the model, and runs on real-world data. A web-based dashboard presents the visualization of the extracted data. This helps job seekers to gain a thorough overview of their desired employment field and compare the salaries offered. The system’s reliability as tested using mean absolute error, the functionality test was performed according to the use case description, and the usability test was performed using the system usability scale. The reliability results indicate a positive correlation with the actual values. The functionality test produced a successful result, and a score of 96.58% was achieved for the system usability scale result, proving the system grade is ‘A’ and usable.

Abstract

This study aims to develop an android-based application to explore students understanding of chemical representation on matter topics. This study used a DDD-E development model as a research method, consisting of deciding stage, designing stage, developing stage, and evaluating stage. The deciding stage begins with analyzing the content and the software used to develop it. The designing stage consists of drawing a flowchart and the storyboard. Then, in the developing stage, the application was developed based on flowchart and the storyboard. The last is evaluating stage, which involves five expert judges reviewing the application. The result shows that the ChemFUN Android application is compatible only for the Android operating system. However, there are many buttons the user can interact. In guided inquiry, the materials show the chemical multiple representations view and the interconnections between macroscopic, microscopic, and symbolic views. The review result show that the final average score on the content quality is 3.64, followed by a language category with an average score of 3.65 and the design category with an average score of 3.60. Although it still has a low audio, spelling, and grammar score, it has been revised. The average for all categories is 3.63, which is very good, indicating that ChemFUN Android application is ready to be used in the learning activity to explore students understanding of chemical representation on matter topics. Also, this kind of research can be done with different chemistry topics, whether in National Curriculum or Cambridge Curriculum.

Abstract

Abstract

Analysis of ball-milling process under various conditions (i.e. working volume, milling time, and material load) on the material properties (i.e. chemical composition, as well as particle size and morphology), product yield, and electricity consumption was investigated. Turmeric (curcuma longa) was used as a model of size-reduced organic material due to its thermally and chemically stability, and fragile. Thus, clear examination on the size-reduction phenomenon during the milling process can be done without considering any reaction as well as time-consuming process. Results showed that working volume is prospective to control the characteristics of product. Working volume manages the shear stress and the collision phenomena during the process. Specifically, the lower working volume led to the production of particles with blunt-edged morphology and sizes of several micrometers. Although working volume is potentially used for managing the final particle size, this parameter has a direct impact to the product yield and electricity consumption. Adjustment of the milling time is also important due to its relation to breaking material and electrical consumption.

Abstract

In a national-scale educational assessment system, such as the National Examination, the need for several sets of questions that have the same level of difficulty is very required to avoid cheating by students. Therefore, the objective, which is to make a set of questions with the same level of difficulty automatically, is done in this research. It used a machine learning approach, namely K-Means. To achieve this goal, several following procedures need to be implemented. Firstly, we need to create banks of questions to be assigned to students. Then, we build training data by determining the value of each question based on Bloom's Taxonomy, item characters/types, and other parameters. Then, with utilizing K-Means, several cluster centers are obtained to represent the uniformity of the questions in the cluster members. By using several heuristics criteria defined previously, several sets or packages of questions that have the same characteristics and difficulty levels are obtained. From the experiments conducted, the analysis with descriptive (i.e., mean, standard deviation, and data visualization) and inference (i.e., ANOVA) statistics of results are presented showing that questions of each sets have the same characteristics to ensure the fairness of examinations. Moreover, by using this system, the contents of the questions in the generated set do not need to be the same, the package of questions can be generated automatically quickly, and the level of the difficulties can be measured and guaranteed.

Abstract

Information and communication technology (ICT) has become an integral part of modern life and has had a significant impact on the world of education, especially in vocational schools. Education is essentially a process for students to acquire knowledge and develop skills through learning experiences. In this study, the learning method used combines the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) disciplines with a focus on developing computer programs using micro:bit block programming to solve real-life problems. The results of the study show that the use of micro:bit as an alternative teaching method for computer science in vocational schools can improve students' creative thinking skills with an average score of 90 after treatment. This study used a pre-experimental design method with 35 subjects from the X grade of the Computer Network and Telecommunication Engineering program at SMK Negeri 1 Cirebon, using written tests and observations as data collection techniques. The use of simple and inexpensive technology products such as micro:bit can enhance learning effectiveness and help students better understand programming concepts. Therefore, micro:bit can be considered as an alternative teaching method for computer science in vocational schools.
