Abstract

Cancer is a disease characterized by abnormal cell growth that invades body tissues, causing pain and discomfort. This pain and discomfort result from tumor pressure on nerves or side effects of treatments such as surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of Self-Selected Individual Music Therapy (SeLIMuT) in reducing pain in cancer patients at Dharmais Cancer Hospital. The research method employed is a case study with pre-test and post-test pain level measurements and monitoring responses during each therapy session. The study involved 10 patients experiencing mild to moderate pain. Music therapy was conducted four times over two days, with each session lasting 15 minutes. Music chosen by the patients themselves created distraction and relaxation effects while stimulating endorphin release, contributing to a reduced perception of pain. The results showed that the SeLIMuT intervention was effective and safe, significantly reducing pain levels measured using the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS). In addition to pain relief, music therapy provided emotional comfort and relaxation for the patients. Future studies are recommended to involve a larger sample size, include various cancer types and palliative treatments, and explore different music genres and the psychological impacts of music therapy.

Abstract

The increasing demand for natural, low-calorie sweeteners highlights the importance of Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni, which produces steviol glycosides that are sweeter than cane sugar and provide health benefits. Due to low seed viability, tissue culture is preferred for propagation, with its success dependent on growth regulators and nutrient availability. Additionally, incorporating plant-derived supplements like Aloe vera, rich in bioactive growth-promoting compounds, may enhance in vitro development. This study aimed to identify the optimal concentration of Aloe vera extract in Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium to enhance the in vitro growth of Stevia rebaudiana. The experiment was conducted using sterile culture bottles arranged in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with one experimental factor, namely Aloe vera extract concentration, consisting of five treatment levels: 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%. Each treatment was replicated five times, resulting in a total of 25 culture bottles used in this study. Observations were carried out periodically based on several parameters, including shoot, root, stem, and leaf development, as well as overall plant viability and growth performance. The findings demonstrated that 10% Aloe vera extract was the most effective concentration for promoting shoot, stem, and leaf growth, while root growth showed no significant variation across treatments.

Abstract

One of the serious complications that often occurs in leukemia patients undergoing chemotherapy is febrile neutropenia, especially in isolation rooms with weak immune systems. The purpose of this study was to provide an overview of the prevalence of febrile neutropenia and the characteristics of leukemia patients undergoing chemotherapy in the Decreased Immunity Isolation Room at Dharmais Cancer Hospital in Jakarta. Data, collected through a descriptive retrospective study design, were obtained from medical records of patients receiving chemotherapy for leukemia between 2013 and 2014, with a sample size of 71 patients calculated using the Slovin formula. The variables analyzed included gender, age, diagnosis, type of chemotherapy, absolute neutrophil count value, and the incidence and characteristics of febrile neutropenia. The results showed that 83.1% of the total patients experienced febrile neutropenia, with the most frequent occurrence on days 8 to 20 after chemotherapy. Most patients with febrile neutropenia had an absolute neutrophil count value of less than 500 cells/µL, indicating a high risk of infection. The majority of patients received antibiotics for the management of febrile neutropenia, with the most commonly used antibiotics being Meropenem and Ceftazidime. This study can help healthcare providers prevent and manage febrile neutropenia in leukemia patients and provide a basis for further research to develop better interventions.
