Abstract

The objectives of this study were to find out what, how, and why humor were realized on Indonesian students’ protest slogans. The method of this research is descriptive qualitative. The data was taken from all the words, phrases, clauses, sentences written  in Indonesian students’ protest slogans. The result shows that there are two types of humor found in Indonesian students’ protest slogans, namely collective identities with total number 7 slogans (35%), the effect of participation with total number 6 slogans (30%), frames with total number 5 slogans (25%) and tactics with total number 2 slogans (10%). Collective identities showed that K-Popers, gamers, introverts are not only as community but also as a new power to strengthen a sense of ‘we’ in social movement. Humor also has the effect of participation on enhancing engagement and preventing burnout by including their personal life experience intentionally and explicitly. Indonesian students’ protest slogans showed frames by using some symbols and some analogies to the popularity (music, drama, song title) to attact public  interest and the protesters brought or wear some attribute in the movement to establish a repertoire and interpreted as an action to get their message across. There were two dualistic reason of using humor in the societal level. Collective identities as the emphasis on differentiation reflects a strong identification to make it possible to exclude the others, while the effect of participation, frames and tactics act as control or resistance which mean a form of attack and challenge the power and become a new way for communicating among the protesters and to establish a new relationship with the power.

Abstract

Local languages are often used less frequently, especially in various formal (official) fields such as government and education. Moreover, the multi-ethnic nature of Indonesian society, with its own language and culture, certainly opens up opportunities for contact through inter-ethnic communication and interaction with different languages and cultures. Some phenomena are interesting to study because these phenomena can become conditions that lead to the extinction of a language. This has become the concern of various groups, especially linguists who are very interested in this field. This is of course very reasonable because the phenomenon of the extinction of a language does not only have implications for the linguistic dimension itself which pays attention to aspects of language and the structures in it. This study aims to find out how the attitude of local language users in using their regional languages and there are two regional languages studied in the North Labuhanbatu area and what language predictions are endangered. Based on the results of the discovery, the endangered language in the North Labuhanbatu area is Javanese compared to the Malay language.

Abstract

Ecolinguistcs study is becoming more popular year by year since many researcher, linguists, and other experts do some researches. Wendel’s (2005:51) definition of ecolinguistics formulated that the ecological approach to language takes into consideration the complex network of relations occurring between environment, languages and people speaking these languages. Since ecolinguistics related to environment, language and people speaking the language, this research is aimed to discuss about the local languages, Hokkian and Tio Cu related to the environment. The data used in this article is the lexical items for fauna and flower. After conducting small observastion, the researcher concludes that the knowledge of lexical items for flora and fauna in local languages, Hokkian and Tio Cu, is less because of environment factors. This means that the language of Hokkian and Tio Cu had been influenced by Bahasa Indonesia as national language. This happened as in the era before the year of 2000, Chinese were not allowed to use their Chinese name, languages (Mandarin or local languages), culture, etc.
