Abstract

This study aims to investigate the difficulties experienced by Grade XI students at SMA Negeri 3 Pematangsiantar in translating recount texts from Indonesian into English. Using a descriptive qualitative method, the research focuses on one class consisting of 36 students during the 2024–2025 academic year. The students were asked to translate a recount text titled “Perjalanan ke Candi Borobudur” (A Trip to Borobudur Temple), which contains linguistic and cultural elements that pose challenges in translation. Data were collected through students’ written translations, classroom observations, and interviews. The analysis revealed four main categories of difficulties: grammatical errors, particularly in the use of the simple past tense; lexical errors due to literal translation; structural errors influenced by Indonesian syntax; and problems translating culture-specific expressions. These findings suggest that students often rely on direct translation strategies, leading to inaccurate and unnatural English output. The study highlights the importance of integrating grammar instruction, vocabulary development, and cultural awareness in translation teaching. Additionally, employing a genre-based approach can help students better understand the features and conventions of recount texts, thereby improving their translation accuracy. The results imply that targeted instructional strategies and consistent practice are essential for enhancing students’ translation competence and overall English proficiency. This study contributes to understanding the linguistic and cultural challenges in EFL translation contexts and offers practical recommendations for language educators.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to conduct an analysis in the form of a case study of 5 short English stories from the American Literature Website. This research employs a qualitative approach, aiming to provide a rich description and insightful explanation and unfold through the collection of plot data, the classification of the plot data, the detailed description and elucidation, and the formulation of conclusions drawn from the insights gained from plot of stories. The research results show that among the five English short stories analyzed, four (80%) exhibit normal progressive plots, while one (20%) presents a distinctive deviation from this norm. Stories 1, 3, and 5 are crafted with normal progressive plots, ensuring a coherent sequence including exposition, trigger action, escalating action, climax, descending action, final action, resolution, and closing. Story 5 also uses a normal progressive plot, only it does not contain descending action, final action, and closing. In contrast, story 2 presents a divergent progressive plot, creating disjointed sequences and unnecessary repetition that may lead to confusion for readers who do not engage with the text attentively.

The purpose of this research was to analyze Most of the universities experienced difficulties requiring their faculty to be actively involved in research and community outreach, and several factors influenced their willingness to pursue such initiatives. The type of research method used is a qualitative research method, which will identify how to motivate lecturer involvement in research and community service. The results showed that the majority of respondents or 85.7% preferred the reward system to encourage faculty involvement in research and community outreach, while the remaining 24 respondents preferred awards, which could range from other collaborations with research with other universities and colleges in the Philippines. Figure 2 shows that the majority of respondents prefer the formation of open research working groups with a total of 50 respondents, 100%, which means strengthening research collaboration will strengthen faculty motivation to engage in research, development, and counseling.

Abstract

This study analyzes the use of metaphors in Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds album, aiming to classify the types of metaphors employed in the song lyrics and uncover their underlying meanings. The research examines ten songs using a descriptive qualitative approach, drawing on Lakoff and Johnson’s (1980) Conceptual Metaphor Theory as the primary analytical framework. The lyrical data were collected from publicly available sources and analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing based on Miles and Huberman’s (1994) model. The findings reveal three dominant metaphor types—ontological, structural, and orientational with structural metaphors appearing most frequently. These metaphors function as symbolic representations of emotional and existential themes such as struggle, identity, love, and resilience. Gallagher often translates abstract concepts into concrete imagery such as light, roads, storms, and clocks—enabling listeners to perceive complex human experiences in a tangible manner. The study concludes that metaphors in High Flying Birds serve not merely as stylistic devices but as cognitive tools that shape listeners’ understanding of life and emotional realities. This research contributes to semantic studies by demonstrating how conceptual metaphors in song lyrics construct meaning beyond literal interpretation and reinforce music’s role as a medium of cultural and emotional expression.
