Abstract

This research explores the use of lexical density of narrative texts in the context of Project-Based Learning. It applies a qualitative research method with a case study investigating 13 English Education Study Program students in three groups in learning the use of lexical density of narrative texts found in three online English textbooks published by the Government for 10th-12th grade students in Indonesia. The technique of the data analysis it uses is three interactive activities of the qualitative researcher, i.e., data collection/reduction, data display, and conclusion draw/verification. The results show that in the context of PBL, the lexical densities of three texts the students could invent are moderate, i.e., 4.45 or 55.64% in text-1, 3.15 or 52.12% in text-2, and 3.89 or 55.69% in text-3. In the classroom setting, the students could construct knowledge on the use of lexical density in narrative texts found in the online English textbooks for 10th-12th grade students in Indonesia. Since this research was a qualitative method with a case study design in the investigation on how a small number of research subjects analysed the use of lexical density of a small number of narrative texts in a classroom reality, it is suggested to apply other research type to investigate the use of lexical density in the narrative texts found in online English textbooks to shed reliable and indispensible pedagogical light to improve the capacity of the prospective English language teacher to face the communicative challenges in the 21st century.

Abstract

This research aimed to analyze the types and factors of grammatical errors in descriptive texts written by seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 3 Pematangsiantar. This research used a qualitative descriptive method. The data were collected from descriptive texts written by 30 students and analyzed using the Surface Strategy Taxonomy by Dulay et al. and the theory of error factors by Ellis. The findings showed that 105 grammatical errors were identified. Misformation was the most dominant error type (60%), followed by omission (33.3%) and addition (6.7%), while misordering was not found. In addition, intralingual transfer was the dominant contributing factor (67.6%), especially incomplete application of rules. These findings indicate that students’ grammatical errors were mainly caused by incomplete mastery of English grammar and the influence of their first language, Bahasa Indonesia.

The t-test value is higher than the t-table value (t-test > t-table). Therefore, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) rejected. Abstract

This research aimed to investigate the effect of using Magic Card as media on the ability of eighth-grade students in writing descriptive text at SMP Negeri 1 Siantar. This study applied a quasi-experimental research design involving two groups, namely an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group was taught by using Magic Card media, while the control group was taught by using the conventional teaching method. The population of this research consisted of all eighth-grade students in the 2025/2026 academic year, and the sample was selected through purposive sampling. The sample consisted of 64 students divided into two classes: 32 students in the experimental group and 32 students in the control group. The instrument used in collecting the data was a writing test in the form of pre-test and post-test. The data were analyzed by using an independent sample t-test. The findings showed that the mean score of the experimental group improved from 55.25 in the pre-test to 71.69 in the post-test, while the control group showed only slight improvement. The result of hypothesis testing revealed that the value of t-observed was 7.29, which was higher than the value of t-table 2.000 at the significance level of 0.05. Therefore, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. In conclusion, the use of Magic Card media significantly improved students’ ability in writing descriptive text. Magic Card media also created a more interactive, enjoyable, and motivating learning atmosphere during the teaching and learning process.
