Abstract

Averrhoa bilimbi, a plant native to Indonesian, exhibits antioxidant, sunscreen, and tyrosinase inhibitory activities due to its polyphenol and flavonoid content. This study aimed to evaluate the anti-aging efficacy of a topical cream containing A. bilimbi fruit extract through a human clinical trial. The extract was obtained by maceration using 70% ethanol and formulated into a water-in-oil (W/O) cream at concentrations of 1% (F1), 3% (F2), and 5% (F3). Each formulation was evaluated for its physical characteristics, including organoleptic properties, homogeneity, pH, and viscosity. Irritation tests were conducted on animals and human volunteers. A total of 24 human subjects applied the cream for 30 days. Skin condition parameters—sebum, moisture, pigmentation, pore size, elasticity, and collagen fibers—were assessed before and after treatment using a skin analyzer. The results showed that the F3 formulation produced the most notable improvements, including increased skin moisture and elasticity, and decreased pigmentation and pore size. Statistical analysis revealed significant improvements (p < 0.05) in pore size and elasticity for the F3 group. These findings indicate that the 5% A. bilimbi extract cream is a safe and effective anti-aging topical formulation.

Abstract

Abstract

This research aimed to evaluate how enhancers affect the properties of Syzygium aromaticum oil in both water-soluble and hydrocarbon bases. Physical and chemical characteristic tests, irritation index evaluations, and anti-inflammatory activity assessments were carried out to analyze the Syzygium aromaticum oil ointment. The pH tests were conducted to measure the chemical characteristics and viscosity, adhesivity, spreadability tests were conducted to measure the physical characteristics of the ointment. Rabbit-based tests were used to determine the irritation index, mice induced by crotton oil were used in anti-inflammatory activity assessments. The pH tests revealed no significant differences between both of ointments. The ointment in the water-soluble base had higher viscosity and adhesivity but lower spreadability than the ointment in the hydrocarbon base. The epidermis thickness of watersoluble and hydrocarbon-based ointments was 3.81±0.40 μm and 4.22±0.15 μm, while the number of cells with COX-2 expression was 18.24±6.51 and 21.01±5.96. The addition of enhancers did not cause any irritation in either ointment. The study concluded that the formula of Syzygium aromaticum oil in a water-soluble ointment with the addition of propylene glycol and oleic acid (70:30) as enhancers provided better physical and chemical characteristics, a lower irritation index, and higher anti-inflammatory activity compared to the hydrocarbon.

Abstract

One of the main components of lip balm is wax. The wax content in the lip balm works to improve the consistency. In this study, a lip balm was prepared to contain rosella flower extract (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.), which contains anthocyanin and can be used as a natural dye. This study aimed to determine the effect of the combination of beeswax and paraffin wax as a wax base on the physical properties and physical stability of lip balm containing rosella flower extract (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) so that the optimum composition can be obtained. Rosella flower extract (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) was prepared by maceration method using 96% ethanol. The extract was formulated in eight formulas with variations of beeswax-paraffin wax and evaluated for physical properties (organoleptic, pH, melting point) and physical stability (organoleptic, pH every week). The optimum formula was obtained using a Simplex lattice design (SLD) with the help of Design-Expert® 10.0.1 software. The results of the simplex evaluation test using the one sample t-test at a 95% confidence level indicate that beeswax has a dominant influence in influencing pH and decreasing pH with design expert coefficient values of 2.09 and 0.50. Meanwhile, paraffin wax has a dominant influence on the melting point with a design expert coefficient value of 0.89. The composition of the two waxes did not affect the shape, texture, color, and scent based on organoleptic observations. The optimum formula for combining beeswax and paraffin wax is 8.02% and 12.31% to produce a product with a pH of 3.91, a melting point of 65.51ºC, and the ability to maintain the pH for four weeks.

Abstract

Moringa oleifera, known as moringa, is reported to have a high source of natural antioxidants, especially vitamin E. The formulation of purified Moringa leaf extract is needed so that the vitamin E content in it is more maximal. This study aimed to determine the levels of vitamin E in extracts after purification, physical property test of emulgel with variations in extract concentration and vitamin E levels in emulsions. The study was started from the extraction using maceration method with petroleum ether solvent, followed by extract purification using column chromatography with n-hexane solvent. The results of the purified extract were then formulated into emulgel with three concentrations of 3% (F1), 6% (F2) and 9% (F3). Emulgel was then evaluated for physical characteristics (pH, viscosity, adhesion, dispersion and stability). Determination of vitamin E levels was carried out on purified extract samples and on each formula. The results of non-specific standardization of extracts included ash content, acidic insoluble ash content were higher than those of Indonesian Herbal Pharmacopoeia literature and drying losses were lower compared to literature. Specific standardization of extracts was the content of vitamin E in 1.40% PE extract and 8.02% purified extract. In the test of emulgel physical characteristics, an increase in the concentration of the extract caused an increase in viscosity and decreased emulgel dispersion power. Whereas, tthe pH and sticky power remained the same. Storage hds an effect on decreasing the physical characteristics of emulsions especially on adhesion. Increased extracts also caused an increase in the levels of vitamin E in the purified extract of moringa leaf emulgel.

Abstract

Moringa oil offers a range of health, nutritional, and cosmetic benefits. However, its characteristics can vary greatly depending on its geographical origin. This study aimed to compare the physicochemical properties, fatty acid composition, antioxidant activity, and beta-sitosterol content of moringa oil obtained from three regions in Indonesia: Central Java, Central Sulawesi, and East Nusa Tenggara. The physicochemical properties examined include organoleptic, specific gravity, viscosity, refractive index, iodine value, acid value, saponification value, and peroxide value. Furthermore, the fatty acid composition was analyzed using gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (GC-FID), antioxidant activity was evaluated by the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method, and beta-sitosterol content was measured by thin-layer chromatography (TLC). Physical attributes, such as viscosity and specific gravity, do not exhibit significant differences between the regions. At the same time, chemical parameters, which include iodine value, acid value, and saponification value, show considerable variations. Fatty acid profiles revealed that oils from Central Sulawesi and East Nusa Tenggara have high oleic acid and low polyunsaturated fat content, providing better oxidative stability and longer shelf life. In contrast, Central Java oil showed higher levels of linoleic and behenic acids, making it more suitable for sensitive skin and hair care applications. Central Java oil exhibits the highest antioxidant activity, whereas Central Sulawesi oil contains the highest concentration of beta-sitosterol, suggesting a more significant potential as an anti-inflammatory agent. These findings highlight the influence of regional origin on the quality of moringa oil, presenting exciting opportunities for further research in this field.

Abstract

Nanostructured Lipid Carries NLCs have gained attention in formulation science and nanotechnology due to their biocompatible material and ability to enhance skin penetration. The goal is to create products that can effectively deliver active compounds to desired skin layers with minimal side effects. This review focuses on the use of functionalized NLCs in dermocosmetics, specifically looking at their composition, manufacturing method, characteristics, and role in delivering active compounds. The review obtained articles from databases such as Scopus, Pubmed, and Google Scholar, covering the years 2014-2024. Data search was conducted in May 2024. The search used keywords such as "NLC OR formulation OR dermal OR activity”. By considering factors such as NLC composition, manufacturing method, and impact on compound delivery, researchers aim to optimize NLCs for use in topical preparations. This research contributes to the development of dermocosmetics that can address various skin problems more effectively. The search results from 32 articles gave an overview of the widely used NLC components: solid lipids: glycerol monostearate, compitrol 888 ATO, and tristearin; liquid lipids: myglyol, transcutol, and oleic acid; surfactants: poysorbat 80 and polysorbate 20. The widely used methods were ultrasonication and high pressure homogenization. Frequently performed characterizations include particle size, polydispersity index (PDI), zeta potential, and Entrapment Efficiency (EE). The pharmacological activity of active components loaded into NLCs increased than without NLCs. The active ingredient formulated in NLC can produce better activity compared to the active substance formulated directly in the conventional preparation. The application of nanostructured lipid carrier (NLC) nanoparticles on the skin is very beneficial. These nano systems have shown promising results and more commercial formulations, so it is expected to be done in further research.

Abstract

Clove flower essential oil (CFEO), which is useful as an anti-inflammatory, has characteristics that make it easily oxidised and sensitive to heat, so it is formulated in the form of a microemulsion preparation. This study aims to compare the effects of the Phase Inversion Composition (PIC) technique and spontaneous emulsification on the physical characteristics of microemulsions made using high and low-energy methods. The research began with the formulation of clove flower essential oil using the PIC technique and spontaneous emulsification based on the optimal composition from previous studies. The microemulsion was prepared at a stirring speed of 3600 rpm for high-energy and 360 rpm for low-energy. The parameters analysed included globule size, polydispersity index, viscosity, and physical stability against phase separation using centrifugation at 3500 rpm for 30 minutes. The results showed that in the high-energy method, the globule size and viscosity between the two techniques were not significantly different (p > 0.05), but the polydispersity index value in the PIC technique was lower than in spontaneous emulsification (p < 0.05), indicating a more uniform droplet distribution. In the low-energy method, the PIC technique significantly produced smaller droplet size, lower polydispersity index, and higher viscosity (p < 0.05), indicating better kinetic stability. Physical stability testing showed that all formulations remained homogeneous without phase separation. Overall, the PIC technique demonstrated superiority and consistency in producing more homogeneous and stable microemulsions. The low-energy method remains an economical and efficient alternative with proper surfactant composition optimisation.
