Abstract

Abstract

Representations of women, Islam, and colonial discourses appear in the Ratu yang Bersujud (2013). The novel is a counter discourse towards the representation of women and Islam in global discourse. The main problem of this research is the representation of Islam and women towards the Western world within the perspective of the author's subject. The purpose is to show the representation of Islam and women according to the author's subject view. This research uses a post-colonial perspective, especially the way colonized subjects present re-representation or overwriting. The objects are the Ratu yang Bersujud (2013) and the views of colonized subjects on the representation of Islamic identity (women and Islam). This research data consists of text narrative structure, thematic ideas of the text, social context of the author or colonized society, and discourse of modern colonialism. The result of the research is that the author's subject carries out a deconstruction that leads to the defense or resistance to the image or representation of Islam and women in the global discourse. However, it is trapped in ambiguity, which is trapped in colonial discourse and does not voice women in Islam but Islamic identity in the perspective of the patriarchal subject. It is proven as a representation of women as objects of misfortune.

Abstract

Tintin comic utilizes onomatopoeia to clarify meaning. Onomatopoeia gives a "window" as an opening to the meaning intended in the text by relating to other context in it. Onomatopoeia reading is a deconstructive reading. The main problem of this type of reading is whether the meaning in the text is based on the marginalized part of the text such as onomatopoeia. The material object of this paper is a comic translation of Tintin's Adventure entitled Tintin Flight 417 to Sidney. The formal object of this paper is the meaning of the text in the comic. The data of this research are onomatopoeia in the text, ideas that arise from the text, and the content of the story. Data interpretation technique was conducted according to deconstruction reading procedure. The results show that onomatopoeia clarify the meaning of the text through a series of oppositions such as onomatopoeia versus text narrative, onomatopoeia versus visual, and text narrative versus visual. Onomatopoeia binds the previous and following sequences and sheds the "unecessary" visuals and narrative texts around it. The intertextual ideas that arise are issues related to rationalism, colonial bias and racial superiority, and the dissolve of those ideas due to criticisms of materialism. These are shown through the texts of adventure, ideological conflict, and super hero characteristics like commonly presented in the era of European Romance.

Abstract

Islamic poets' poetical themes expressed their spiritual experience in Indonesian literature during the 1930s. These themes had opposed to the Islamic movement at the time, which was fighting against colonial ideology. The objectives of this study are to look at why poets advocated oppositional views in the face of colonial discourse, as well as the poets' position within the Dutch colonial system in the 1930s. Thematic notions of Indonesian literary poets in the 1930s, biographical histories of poets, and colonial discourses in Indonesia in the 1930s were among the data sources used in this study. The result revealed that the poets adopted a romantic aesthetic mimicking strategy to portray the idea of their spiritual experience. In most colonial literature, the mimicry between the colonizer and the colonized nation heightens the ambivalence of the Indonesian human personality. Because of ethical adjustments and unacceptable ideal categories, this ambiguous attitude develops. Syncretism emerges as a result of the clash of Western and Eastern civilizations. The author's aesthetic mimicry strategy has implications for the poet's ambivalence: on the one hand, the poet follows Balai Pustaka's aesthetic pattern with an understanding of individualism, while on the other hand, the poet ignites the concept of Islamic symbolic memory as part of the construction of Indonesian cultural identity, as in the Indonesian Cultural Polemics from 1930 to 1942.

Abstract

Totemism is a belief in an animal or plant’s guiding spirit that is linked to a person’s character and destiny. Totemism manifests itself in tattoos as body decoration and symbols of hope, such as Yakuza tattoos (irezumi). This research aims to reveal the representation and meaning of totemistic irezumi worn by three Yakuza characters (Kazuma Kiryuu, Akira Nishikiyama, and Goro Majima) in two Yakuza-themed game series: Yakuza 0 (2015) and Yakuza Kiwami 1 (2016). These games provided the primary data in the form of images and conversations. Ricoeur’s hermeneutic theory was applied to examine the data, along with qualitative descriptive and interpretative methods. Analysis revealed differences between the meaning of tattoos shown in the Yakuza games and those existing in the real world. Kiryuu’s dragon tattoo represents the burden of responsibility; Nishiki’s koi tattoo represents the burden of being a great individual; and Majima’s tattoo represents an emotional burden. Thus, the entities shown in those irezumi can be said to represent psychological burden and influence their bearers’ as personal totems.
