Abstract

Sepsis is a life-threatening condition caused by a dysregulated response of the body to infection. Sepsis is closely associated with high costs and prolonged length of hospitalization. The purpose of this study was to determine the correlation between sepsis risk factors and length of hospitalization for sepsis patients at Dr. Saiful Anwar Malang General Hospital. This study used a retrospective cohort approach with a sample size of 56 medical records. The study used inclusion criteria for sample selection. The analysis results in a p-value of 0.976 and an r-value of 0.004; the findings demonstrated a correlation between patient age and length of hospitalization. A p-value of 0.634 and an r-value of --0.065 indicated a correlation between comorbidities and length of hospitalization. The p-value was 0.101, and the r-value was 0.222, indicating a correlation with the use of intrusive devices. This result suggests that the length of hospitalization for sepsis patients at Dr. Saiful Anwar General Hospital in Malang was not significantly correlated with sepsis risk factors, including age, comorbidities, and the use of invasive devices. Therefore, it is also necessary to examine the admission diagnosis, the SOFA score, and the quantity and duration of invasive device use.

Abstract

This study investigated the impact of mobile phone–derived electromagnetic wave (EMW) exposure on the uterus and progeny of pregnant Balb/c mice. Fourteen pregnant mice were randomly assigned to two groups (n=7 each). The control group (CG) was not exposed to EMW. In contrast, the experimental group (EG) was subjected to continuous exposure to EMW at a whole-body specific absorption rate (SAR) of 1.74 W.kg-1 for 24 hours daily from gestational day (GD) 1 to 19. On GD 20, all mice were euthanized, and body weight, oxidative stress biomarkers, and uterine histological parameters were assessed. Maternal body weight at termination showed a significant reduction in EG compared with CG (p < 0.05). However, differences in overall body weight gain, malondialdehyde (MDA), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels were not statistically significant (p > 0.05). Histological evaluation revealed marked alterations: endometrial scores were significantly higher in EG (3.32) than in CG (0.56) (p < 0.05), and myometrial scores were elevated in EG (1.72) versus CG (0.64). Endometrial thickness was reduced in EG (0.748 mm) compared with CG (1.470 mm) (p < 0.05), whereas myometrial thickness showed no significant difference. Continuous EMW exposure (24 h.day-1, GD1–GD19; SAR 1.74 W.kg-1) was associated with lower maternal weight at GD20, reduced litter size, higher endometrial/myometrial injury scores, and reduced endometrial thickness, while MDA and SOD differences were not statistically significant (p > 0.05). These findings warrant further studies to clarify the mechanisms involved without overstating the changes in oxidative biomarkers.

Abstract

Background: Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) is still a significant burden to global public health. Successful prevention is a function of community capacity, including locus of control (internal belief in one’s ability) and collective potential to implement prevention. Objectives: The objective of this research was to measure K, A and P with a specific emphasis on examining the degree to which these mentored K, A and P align with community sense-making (meaning), constructed capacity (function), and perceived controllability for making useable space free from vectors. Methods: A cross-sectional design was used, with 102 respondents (mainly women, productive age group and primary education level). Descriptive statistics, Chi-Square test for bivariate analysis and Multivariate Logistic Regression were used to determine independent predictors. Results: A noticeable gap between the KAP was determined. Although the proportion of respondents with favorable attitudes is high (66.7%), that of preventive practices was low (54.9% poor score). There was marginal knowledge (45.1% poor) with a high proportion of critical misconceptions (80.4% incorrect response to key transmission point). On multivariate analysis, significantly associated with good knowledge were education (Junior High vs Primary School) (OR=4.1, p=0.015) and middle income for favorable attitudes (OR=2.9, p=0.041). Notably, neither demographic variable (age, gender, education nor income) showed association with good preventive practice. Conclusion: The poor practice indicates a lack in the ability of DHF preventive activities, i.e. the capacity and collective control despite of high motivation (attitude). That practice was not also predicted by demographics implies that barriers are structural and environmental. Hence, interventions will need to move away from knowledge-based approaches to community mobilization for control and resource movement towards dismantling structural drivers for closing the attitude-practice gap.

Abstract

Background: HIV prevention in rural communities like Ngadas Village (Mount Bromo) faces two major challenges: stigma driven by misconceptions and the need for social resilience amid rapid social and economic transitions influenced by tourism. Limited access to health information and education increases the risk of myths, discrimination, and a poor sense of coherence. This salutogenic study explores how community coherence and cultural strength can serve as resources to reduce HIV stigma and promote resilience. Objective: This study aims to evaluate the level of HIV knowledge and stigma among residents of Ngadas Village and identify factors influencing them. Methods: A cross-sectional quantitative design was used, involving 102 residents who completed a structured questionnaire covering demographics, HIV knowledge, stigma, and attitudes. Data analysis employed chi-square tests and logistic regression (p<0.05) to determine significant predictors. Results: Most respondents (90.2%) were female, with 66.7% having primary education. Although 66.7% demonstrated good general knowledge, a significant gap in health literacy existed—94% misunderstood HIV transmission, wrongly believing it spread through sharing meals or cutlery. This misconception contributed to high stigma levels, with 49% exhibiting poor or high stigma. Higher education (Junior High OR: 10.9; Senior High OR: 7.4) and middle income (OR: 3.4) significantly predicted lower stigma. A more positive attitude was also associated with middle income (OR: 5.4). Conclusion: Misconceptions about casual HIV transmission are the primary source of stigma and barriers to social coherence. Targeted health literacy interventions, combined with economic empowerment and improved access to education, are essential to strengthen community resilience and reduce HIV-related stigma.
