Abstract

Landuse planning according to biophysical and economical land suitability as well as basic allocation for transmigration should be done in order to improve the well-being of transmigrants. Suitability should be analyzed for the selection of commodities which are the most appropriate biophysically and profitable economically. The study was done in the settlements unit of Rantau Pandan SP-1, Jambi Province. The study was conducted to determine the suitability of each part of land for cultivation of food crops, vegetables and perennial crops and to see the biophysical suitability and economical feasibility. The goal is to recommend the most appropriate type of cultivation. This study integrate the Arc-View GIS and Automated Land Evaluation System (ALES) in the analysis of land suitability. The results showed that four agricultural commodities were observed showing land suitability class domination of S3 (marginally suitable) with the most dominant limiting factors were erosion and nutrient retention. The results of the analysis have been used for the determination of land use recommendations in the transmigration sites, presented spatially. Recommendations given based on the results of the analysis were not always in line with the land use recomended by government on dry land transmigration. Nonetheless, these results was suggested to be applied, either by considerations of conservation land and the consideration of economic benefit and farmers welfare. Key words: Land evaluation, transmigration, dry land farming, geographic information system

Abstract

The extent of land use and land cover (LULC) of paddy field in Subang Regency has decreased because of the conversion into non-paddy field. The objectives of this research were to review the spatial pattern of LULC change, to analyze the cause and to identify the anticipation strategy of paddy field conversion. The analysis used the Landsat data of 1999, 2004, 2009, and 2014 which were interpreted by supervise technique. The interpretation result was compared with the existing LULC and was examined by Kappa methode. This research focuses on the spatial pattern of LULC change, integrated with the Interpretative Structural Modeling (ISM) to review the cause and the anticipation strategy of the conversion. The results revealed that the paddy field was converted into plantation, built-up area, and dryland agriculture. The ISM result revealed that the conversion causes were: (1) increasing the farmer economic needs, (2) increasing the built-up area, (3) increasing the selling price of land and (4) decreasing the farming motivation. To anticipate the conversion, several priorities are needed, namely (1) rehabilitation of the irrigation infrastructures and regulation of the spatial planning, (2) tighten the conversion permit and maximization of the abandoned land, and (3) giving the incentive and disincentive for the farmers, land consolidation, and establishment of corporate farming.

Abstract

The Cilembu sweet potato is the popular food crop from specific location in Sumedang, West Java. Sweetness degree is one of key indicators for this commodity. Sweetness degree relate to sugar content. Currently, Cilembu sweet potato variety was grown by farmers is Rancing. They were local culture on cultivation and storage of Cilembu sweet potato. Study of Cilembu sweet potato based on land characteristics on cultivation location and sweetness quality along storage periods between different cultivation locations is limited. The objectives of this study were to determined influence of land characteristics of cultivation locations and storage periods on sweetness quality of Cilembu sweet potato. Samples were taken from harvested tubers from Cilembu, Rancakalong, Sukasari, Cicalengka, and Jalaksana cultivation location using purposive sampling method. Sweetness degree was measured by total sugar content using luff schoorl method. The experiment design was used split plot design. The experiment room controlled at the same condition. The storage periods was observed at 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4 weeks after harvest. The role of land characteristics on the sweetness quality of Cilembu sweet potato was used analysis of regression and t test for equality of means. The result showed that storage periods was significantly affect the sweetness quality of Cilembu sweet potato, while the cultivation locations did not significant influence on sweetness quality. They were not interaction between both factors. The chemical and physical soil properties, elevation and climate properties affect differences of sweetness quality of Cilembu sweet potato on different cultivation locations.

Abstract

Various natural disasters, such as floods and landslides, are often associated with extreme weather conditions, especially rainfall, where in fact the possibility of such a disaster will be smaller if the carrying capacity of the land is still good. The decrease of land carrying capacity is often due to land use change, so that the land is not capable to perform it functions and is categorized as critical land. The decline in land carrying capacity will affect other resources, especially water resources. Anticipatory measures of natural disasters such as floods and landslides can perfectly prepared if information regarding land conditions, including land criticality, are available in detail and up to date. The classification and mapping of land criticality becomes an important component in the preparation of land rehabilitation and natural disaster prevention plans including setting the priority actions. The Minister of Forestry Regulation no P.32 / Menhut-II / 2009 concerning Procedures for Preparation of Forest and Watershed Technical Rehabilitation Plan was use as criteria for land classification and both Fuzzy and Crisp calculation methods were applied to calculate the final score. Different classification result was found in 23 HURL and comparing to actual the condition, the Fuzzy method gives more accurate result than Crisp method.

Abstract

Land use change is the cause of carbon loss from land. The loss of this carbon becomes a source of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere that can cause global warming. Intensive land use and land cover occurred in Kabupaten Banyuasin from 2004-2014. The purpose of this study. to create carbon balance, emissions and sequestration of CO2 during the period of 2004 - 2014 in Banyuasin Regency caused by land use change and land cover change. The method used to create carbon balance using land use change matrix, carbon calculation of each carbon pool by allometric method, destructive sample and organic C by Walkley and Black method. Stock diference method for analysis of changes in carbon storage, CO2 emissions and CO2 sequestration. The results of this study indicate that the 2004-2014 carbon balance in Banyuasin Regency is negative, with a carbon loss of 22,033,277 tons with an average annual carbon loss of 2,203,327 tons. CO2 sequestration of 29,298,966 tons and CO2 emissions 118,044,141 tons, while net emissions 88,745,175 tons. Average net CO2 emissions from above ground carbon pools, carbon necromassa pools, litter carbon pools and underground carbon pools are 7 tonnes ha-1 year-1, whereas CO2 emissions from organic soil C 0.61 tonnes ha- 1 year-1. The largest contributor of CO2 emissions in Banyuasin Regency are sequentially caused by changes in peat swamp forests, secondary mangrove forests, primary mangrove forests and secondary swamp forests. While the source of sequestration is the change of monoculture rubber peat, oil palm, rubber monoculture and shrubs.
