Abstract

The environmental pollution by the drainage containing heavy metals such as Hg is a serious problem in mining activities in Indonesia. We examined the effect of coexisting thiourea on the adsorptive removal of Hg by zeolites and montmorillonite. To a 100 mL of 10 mg/L (0.05 mM) HgCl2 solution in the absence and presence of 0.5 mM thiourea, different amounts of zeolite (A4, P or mordenite) or montmorillonite was added, shaken for 24 h, centrifuged, and supernatant Hg2+ concentration was measured. In the absence of thiourea, the ratio of the negative charges in the adsorbents to the positive charges in Hg2+, Ads/Hg ratio, needed to attain >80% Hg2+ removal were >70 for mordenite, >1625 for P, >600 for A4, and montmorillonite showed no Hg2+ adsorption. In contrast, in the presence of thiourea, nearly 100% removal was attained at lower Ads/Hg ratios: the ratios were 1 for montmorillonite, <10 for P and <18 for A4; the presence of thiourea had little effect for mordenite. These results indicate that Hg2+-thiourea complex has extremely high adsorption affinity for negative charges of montmorillonite, A4 and P, and the complex can fully penetrate into the interlayer space of montmorillonite. However, with increasing the Ads/Hg ratio, the Hg2+ removal percentage for montmorillonite, A4 and P decreased. Therefore, for the effective removal of  Hg2+ in the presence of thiourea, the choice of adsorbents and the dose of the adsorbents should be carefully determined.

Abstract

A merging of Jakarta and Bandung metropolitans influence the development of the areas around them. Consequently, people are migrating to the cities caused an increasing population. It leads to experiencing uncontrolled advancement and arising problems. One of them is the raising land demand for settlement development, but the land is limited. Therefore, there is a need to address these particularities. This research aimed to model suitable and available land for settlement development in Cianjur Regency. Multi-criteria evaluation (MCE) and geographical information system (GIS) were collaborated to define the suitability criteria. The analytical hierarchy process (AHP) was employed to set the criteria's weight. Spatial Plan and LP2B were carried out as limiting factors. The result showed that the most crucial consideration came from the disaster. The suitability classes in Cianjur regency are: highly suitable 36%, Suitable 7%, Marginally suitable 44%, and Not suitable 14%. 85% of land in 2018 was available for settlement. Yet it is decreasing becomes 2% in 2030. Therefore, the potential land for settlement development is The different perspectives among developers, academics, and government in determining the most critical criteria for land suitability plays a crucial role in the next Cianjur’s settlement development planning. The implementation of the Spatial Plan can minimize environmental problems such as land conversion. In addition, regarding the new regulation on LP2B, the Spatial Plan has to be updated to synchronize the plan between Spatial Plan and LP2B.

Abstract

Strong opinions have been expressed toward oil palm plantation industry in Indonesia, and these opinions portray that oil palm plantation development in Indonesia has caused the destruction of the environment. One of the efforts currently undertaken by the Indonesian government to ensure the sustainability of the palm oil industry is establishing sustainability standard called the Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO) which is mandatory. ISPO is "guidance" for sustainable oil palm development as well as a commitment based on the laws and regulations aplication of some licenses in Indonesia. The purpose of this study was to determine the capability of oil palm plantation companies in the regional to meet the standards of the Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO) and to identify the problems faced in achieving these standards. This research was conducted in East Kalimantan province on the period June 2012-May 2013. Evaluation of the capability of the companies to achieve the ISPO standards was performed by the audit method, assessment results of all parameters that had been established in accordance with the Principles, Criteria and Indicators in the provision of ISPO which were assessed in a percent unit. The research results showed that the capability of the plantation companies in East Kalimantan in meeting the ISPO standards reached 79,14%, and this capability can be improved up to 100% by increasing efforts to comply with the principles, criteria and indicators that are still not in accordance with the provisions of ISPO are as follows: 1). Licence system and plantation management, 2). Aplication guidance cultivation technics and processing palm fruit, 3). Management and monitoring invironment, 4). Resposibility to workers, and 5). Social resposibility and community. The determantion factor performance on ISPO standard is the commitment of plantation company as a business stakeholder that supported by capable human resources to create the sustainable plantation development and also the goverment action in charge as the regulator in supervising the policy that has been set. Socialization and training about principles and criteria ISPO standard to plantation company needs soon and more intensively done by the government association with ISPO commission to accelerate the application of the ISPO. Socialization and training also are required in order to overcome the constraints in attainment of principles and criteria of the Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil standard, because of the mentioned efforts are the part of success factors to apply the ISPO.Keyword: ISPO, Management, Palm Oil, Plantations, Sustainable.

Abstract

Abstract

The  paper  describes inherent optical properties  (IOP)  of  the  Berau  coastal  waters  derived from in  situ measurements  and Medium  Resolution  Imaging  Spectrometer  (MERIS) satellite  data. Field  measurements  of optical  water,  total  suspended  matter  (TSM), and  chlorophyll-a  (Chl-a) concentrations were carried out during the dry season of 2007. During this periode, only four MERISdata were  coincided with in  situ measurements on 31 August  2007. The MERIS  top-of-atmosphere radiances were atmospherically corrected using the MODTRAN radiative transfer model. The in situ optical  measurement  have  been  processed  into apparent optical properties  (AOP) and sub  surface irradiance. The remote sensing reflectance of in situ measurement as well as MERIS data were inverted into  the  IOP  using quasi-analytical algorithm  (QAA).  The  result  indicated  that coefficient  of determination (R 2) of backscattering coefficients of suspended particles (bbp) increased with increasing wavelength,  however  the  R2 of  absorption  spectra  of  phytoplankton  (aph)  decreased  with  increasing wavelength.

Abstract

Understanding the role of controlling factors and their geographical patterns is very important to predict landslide insecurity in the future. Until now, several qualitative, quantitative and semi-quantitative methods have been used to produce landslide-prone maps such as the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP). This study aims to: 1) identify landslide-prone factors in Banjarnegara Regency, 2) delineation spatial patterns of landslide-prone areas using the AHP method in Banjarnegara Regency. Factors that cause Banjarnegara Regency to be prone to landslides are slope, rainfall, soil type, lithology, land use, and land shape. Landslide-prone classification using AHP method produces 5 zones, namely very low prone zones (32.97%), low (19.69%), medium (25.31%), high (17.46%) and very high (4.55%). Landslide prone assessment using the AHP method has an accuracy rate of 81%, so the classification of landslide-susceptibility zones is categorized as high.

Abstract

Vegetation can be an important indicator of ecosystem change, the influence of anthropogenic and non-anthropogenic factors. Therefore, it is important to study the dynamics of vegetation changes. One technique that can be used for vegetation analysis is the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). NDVI is an indicator of the active biomass that helps distinguish vegetation from other land cover and can provide information about changes in Spatio-temporal vegetation dynamics, thus allowing for assessment of the ecological conditions. This study aimed to investigate the dynamic of vegetation in the Sangkub watershed area located in North Sulawesi Province. This analysis used geospatial technology with the NDVI method, utilizing Landsat 5 and Landsat 8 satellite imagery data in three periods the year 2000, 2015, and 2020. The results showed that vegetation cover of the Sangkub watershed decreased substantially, whereas the non-vegetated area increased gradually over time.
