Abstract

Obesity in children has reached epidemic levels in both developed and developing countries. Overweight and obesity in childhood are known to have a significant impact on physical and psychological health. Overweight and obese children tend to be obese into adulthood and are more likely to develop non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease at a younger age. The mechanism of obesity is not fully understood and is believed to be a disorder with various causes. In general, overweight and obesity are assumed to result from increased calorie and fat intake. On the other hand, there is supporting evidence that excessive sugar intake through soft drinks, an increase in portion size, and a steady decline in physical activity play a major role in the increase in obesity rates worldwide. Child obesity can greatly affect children's physical, social and emotional well-being, and self-confidence. It is also associated with poor academic performance and a lower quality of life experienced by children. Many comorbid conditions such as metabolic, cardiovascular, orthopedic, neurological, hepatic, pulmonary, and renal disorders have also been seen to be associated with childhood obesity. The growing problem of childhood obesity can be slowed, if society focuses on its causes. Overweight and obesity cannot be solved through individual actions alone. A comprehensive response is needed to create a healthy environment that can support individuals in making healthy choices based on knowledge and skills related to health and nutrition. This response requires government commitment and leadership, long-term investment, and whole-of-society engagement to protect children's right to good health and well-being. Progress can be made if all actors remain committed to working together towards the common goal of ending childhood obesity. This literature review discusses obesity in children by explaining what risk factors influence and long-term consequences for children.

Abstract

Acute ischemic stroke is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, significantly impacting patients' quality of life and healthcare systems. Understanding prognostic factors that predict clinical outcomes in acute ischemic stroke patients is crucial, especially with the rising prevalence of risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia. Recent studies have focused on hematological biomarkers, particularly the platelet-to-white blood cell ratio (PWR), which reflects the interaction between immune system components and hemostasis. This literature review examines the prognostic value of PWR in acute ischemic stroke, correlating higher PWR with better clinical outcomes measured by the National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS). Lower PWR values have been associated with increased mortality risk within 90 days post-stroke. The dynamics of PWR provide insights into the body's response to ischemia and inflammation, highlighting its potential as a valuable prognostic marker. While PWR shows promise as a prognostic tool, limitations such as individual variability in inflammatory response, timing of measurement, and lack of standardization must be considered. Further research is needed to explore PWR's potential across diverse populations and address existing limitations to enhance its clinical application in managing acute ischemic stroke.

Abstract

Patient safety culture is the key to providing high-quality and safe healthcare services. All healthcare providers, especially nurses, must be committed to creating and maintaining a strong patient safety culture. This research aims to gain a deep understanding of patient safety culture. The method used is a literature study taken from PubMed and Google Scholar databases published within the last 5 years and relevant to the topic. The selected articles are those that are fully available, focus on hospitals as the research site, and are written in Indonesian or English. The research shows that a good patient safety culture, characterized by leadership support, teamwork, open communication, and an effective incident reporting system, can improve the quality of healthcare and reduce risk of medical errors. However, many hospitals have not fully implemented a patient safety culture optimally. Some common challenges include low incident reporting rates, lack of leadership support, and a lack of a learning culture from mistakes. To address this problem, continuous efforts are needed to build a strong patient safety culture, such as increasing staff awareness, providing training, and creating safe environment for reporting errors.

Abstract

Anxiety is one of the mental disorders often experienced by medical students due to high academic pressure. Factors that influence anxiety include biological, psychological, and social aspects. This study aims to determine the relationship between gender and anxiety levels in medical students. The method used is a literature review with a total sampling technique, in which four selected journals from the period 2015–2025 were analyzed. The results showed that female students have higher levels of anxiety compared to male students. This is due to several factors, such as hormonal differences, where estrogen plays a role in the regulation of serotonin which affects anxiety, and differences in emotional responses, where women are more likely to use emotion-based coping strategies. In addition, greater social pressure on women also contributes to their high levels of anxiety. The impact of high anxiety on students can affect academic achievement, concentration, and overall mental health. Therefore, it is important for educational institutions to provide psychological support and effective stress management programs to help students, especially women, manage anxiety. With the right intervention, it is hoped that medical students can be better prepared to face academic and professional challenges without experiencing significant psychological disorders.
