Abstract

The study of Balanophora in South Sumatra has been carried out from July-August 2018. This research uses the direct observation and collection method in 3 km long track in the Bukit Jambul Gunung Patah Protection Forest Area, South Sumatra. Sample identification was carried out in the Biology Department of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Sriwijaya University. The results show that there is one Balanophora species, B. elongata. There are 2 subspecies of this species, namely B. elongata var. elongata and B. elongata var. ungeriana (Valeton) B. Hansen. The difference between these 2 subspecies is var. ungeriana in the tubers is not elongated with longitudinally coarse luruk leaves. At that location only found species of B. elongata var. ungeriana. Distribution: Peninsula Malaysia, Borneo, Sumatra, Java, and mostly in West Java for subsp. ungeriana is only recorded on the island of Java precisely at Mount Salak and Mount Gede in West Java. This species is the first record for the Sumatra Island. There are around 30 individual species of B. elongata var. ungeriana respectively 23 female individuals and 7 male individuals. Bulbs, leaf characters and flower types are important to identifying the species of Balanophora. Most of these species are found in habitats where they have a height of 1000-2800 meters above sea level which are suitable for habitat in the Bukit Jambul Gunung Patah Protection Forest Area.

Abstract

Coal mining can disrupt the balance of the ecosystem, including the soil environment ecosystem as a habitat for soil arthropods. This study aims to see the soil arthropod family, relative density, diversity, dominance and evenness of soil arthropods in the revegetation area of the ex-mining area of PT. Bara Alam Utama. The re-search was conducted in the revegetation area of the former coal mine area of PT. Bara Alam Utama in Lahat district, South Sumatra. The research area consists of 8 location points, namely natural areas, revegetation areas of age 7,6,5,4,3,2 and 1 year. The study was conducted using an exploratory survey method, sampling was car-ried out based on the purposive sampling method by drawing a 100 m long transect with 5 sample plots inside measuring 20 x 10 m at each revegetation age. The results showed that the highest soil arthropod diversity index was found at the 3 year old revegetation location (H = 0.915) and the highest soil arthropod evenness index was at the 3 year old revegetation location (e = 0.17), while the highest soil arthropod dominance index was at 5 year old revegetation location (D = 0.886) which causes the 5 year revegetation location to have the lowest soil ar-thropod diversity index and evenness index (H = 0.351 and e = 0.054), while the lowest soil arthropod domi-nance index value is at the 3 year old revegetation location (D = 0.667), so it can be seen that there is a correla-tion between the diversity index and the evenness index of soil arthropods where both are inversely proportional to the results of the calculation of the dominance index. The high and low diversity index at each research loca-tion is influenced by abiotic factors (pH, soil temperature and soil moisture), age of revegetation and type of vegetation

Abstract

Coal mining activities in South Sumatra are among others carried out by PT. Bukit Asam tbk, a coal company located in Tanjung Enim. The open pit/cast mining process has a negative impact on the environment, some of the impacts are land degradation, loss of vegetation, changes in microclimate and loss of biodiversity which includes diversity of flora and fauna, one of which is amphibians. One of the efforts to maintain and preserve environmental capabilities is to reclaim former mines. In accordance with Law No. 4 of 2009 concerning Mineral and Coal Mining requires mining companies to carry out reclamation and post-mining activities over the areas they cultivate. Reclamation-revegetation activities are efforts to improve microclimate conditions, improve soil fertility conditions. The recovery of environmental conditions is expected to bring back the wildlife that has been lost. The amphibian community is believed to be a bioindicator of the recovery of environmental conditions undergoing habitat changes. The research was carried out at the Bukit Asam coal mine reclamation area, Air laya site from February to March. The aim of the study was to see the types of amphibians found in the mine reclamation area. Sampling was carried out using the VES (Visual Enconter Survey) method. From the results obtained, there were 3 species from 2 members of the Order (Anura) and 2 members of the Family (Rinidae).

Abstract

Culex spp are mosquito vectors that have a very wide distribution capability and are carriers of pathogens that can interfere with human and animal health. The wide distribution makes Culex spp a dangerous threat. DNA extraction is one of the important steps in obtaining genetic information and genetic analysis. Good quality DNA is used for activities such as the use of molecular markers, genome library creation, and sequencing. This study aims to determine the quality, concentration and purity of Culex spp mosquito DNA in Kemelak Bindung Langit Village, OKU Regency. It is hoped that the sample can be used for further research analysis on Mitochondria D-Loop Sequences in Culex spp mosquitoes. Quantitative measurement of DNA in the form of concentration and purity of DNA using Nanodrop Thermo cycle while qualitative DNA using electrophoresis technique. The results of the isolation of the mosquito genome DNA, obtained clear DNA bands without any degradation (smear) and the concentration results for the four samples ranged from 10-100 ng/µL and the DNA purity was good, ranging from 1.8 to 2.00.

Abstract

Salt or sodium chloride (NaCl) is an additive to give food a salty taste. The use of salt in everyday life is difficult to avoid. Salt has both good and bad effects on the body. The electrolyte content of salt can help launch metabolism in the body, whereas if the body contains too much salt it will cause heart attacks and hypertension. The dose of salt consumption that has been set by the government is 5g/day. This study was conducted to examine the effect of consuming excessive sodium chloride (NaCl) on the ability to smell and to what extent it damages cells in the hippocampus of mice (Mus musculus). The method of this study was CRD (completely randomized design) with 6 replications, 1 group control and 3 repetitions induced by sodium chloride (NaCl) is 260mg/gBB (P1), 520mg/gBB (P2), and 780mg/gBB (P3). The parameters of this study are neurosensory coordination in the form of olfactory response of mice (Mus musculus) to ammonia and cell disruption in the hippocampus (DG & CA) which were observed by histological preparations of Hematoxylin eosin (HE) staining. The results of this study indicate the presence of olfactory disorders in mice (Mus musculus) and cell death in the hippocampus also increased due to excessive sodium chloride (NaCl) induction. The more salt is consumed in daily life, it will disrupt the cells in the hippocampus.
