Abstract

For the sake of sustaining transformation to off farm at rural economic and well planned, the contribution of physical capital and social capital in promoting community income in agroforestry community needs to be revealed through a systematic research, especially for villages located around suburban areas such as Sidoharjo and Jati Agung Villages, South Lampung. This study aimed at determining the contribution of physical capital, social capital, infrastructure, and sources of income outside of agroforestry activities  (off farm). In order to test the role of social and physical capitals, physical infrastructure, and the off farm sector on house hold income we employed Spearmen Correlation at confident level of 5 and 10%. In pursuing these objective, a semi-structured survey was conducted to 90 households in the two villages.  This result connoted that the house hold income was affected by : [a] social capital, especially network element (P-value = 0.079), [b] physical capital (land ownership P-value = 0.004 and cattle P-value = 0.003), [c] Off farm sector especially for the home industry (P- value=0.000) and [d] infrastructure, especially the quality of rural roads (P-value=0.080).  It is recommend that conduct research on the development of community empowerment policies so that they voluntarily leave forest land occupations through the development of a cow agrosilvopasture partnership

Abstract

This article argues that the practice of agroforestry provides ecological contributions to smallholder farmers cultivating in watershed areas. Specifically, this farming system contributes to the carbon sequestration potential of woody perennials and the biodiversity conservation of other system components. This argument is based on research conducted in the Molawin-Dampalit Sub-Watershed, Mt. Makiling Forest Reserve in the Philippines, and the Way Betung Watershed in Indonesia. The research involved interview sessions with 106 and 261 smallholder farmers, and the assessment of 27 and 14 agroforestry plots for carbon stock assessment and biodiversity assessment, respectively. Results indicated that the total carbon found among the crop components was 52.32 MgC/ha in the Molawin-Dampalit Sub-Watershed and 244.26 MgC/ha in the Way Betung Watershed, suggesting a high carbon sequestration potential of woody perennials and understory crops in an agroforestry system. The farm lots cultivated by smallholder farmers were found to contribute to biodiversity conservation, having a moderate biodiversity index of 2.59 and 2.53, respectively. With these findings, the promotion of desired agroforestry systems in suitable portions of watershed areas should be intensified to contribute to ecological balance across the landscape. Agroforestry should always be an integral part of all initiatives toward ecological restoration, with cultivators or smallholder farmers as potential partners. The agroforestry system should consider all technical and socioeconomic factors to ensure diverse components and provide food security for smallholder farmers throughout the year.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to analyze forest protection policies in mitigating the health impacts of forest fires, with a particular focus on the provinces of Central Kalimantan and Riau. The method used is a literature review, involving the analysis of legal regulations, regional policy documents, and relevant academic journals. Although Indonesia has a relatively strong legal framework, policy implementation faces significant challenges, including limited resources and widespread dependence on land-burning practices by both local communities and corporations. Health impacts such as acute respiratory infections (ARI) and chronic respiratory problems continue to rise alongside the frequency of forest fires. Based on data from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, in 2019 Central Kalimantan contributed 134,227 hectares and Riau 75,871 hectares to the national total of 1.64 million hectares of burned area. Therefore, a more integrated, prevention-oriented policy approach involving community participation and early detection technologies is urgently needed

Abstract

The buffer area of the Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park (BBSNP) has the potential to be developed through the creative economy, including ecoprint. Ecoprint is one of the textile dyeing techniques that uses natural materials, making it environmentally friendly and having artistic and economic value. This study aims to analyze the social characteristics of the BBSNP community, the level of ecoprint skills, and the relationship between the two in supporting regional Sustainability. The research uses quantitative methods through questionnaires that are analyzed descriptively and analytically. The results of the study show that the productive age group dominates the community, secondary education is common, farming is common, and the community has a good environmental experience. Ecoprint skills are at the basic to intermediate level and contribute as an additional income. The study also found that environmental experience and social engagement were more influential on ecoprint skills. Community empowerment through ecoprint training has been proven to foster new skills, build creativity, and strengthen collaboration between the government, academics, and business actors. Thus, ecoprints not only have aesthetic value but also serve a strategic role in supporting a creative economy based on local wisdom and environmental conservation

Abstract

Bird habitat use is closely linked to survival, reflecting reciprocal interactions between avifauna and vegetation structure within managed landscapes. Coffee monoculture, coffee-based agroforestry, and community-managed forests represent land-use systems with varying capacities to support bird communities in the Utilization Block of the Batutegi Forest Management Unit (KPH Batutegi), Lampung, Indonesia. This study aimed to assess bird species diversity, species similarity, feeding guild composition, and the influence of vegetation and environmental variables across these habitat types. Bird surveys were conducted using the point count method, complemented by quantitative analyses of vegetation structure and environmental factors. Results indicate that the highest bird species diversity occurred in forest habitats (H′ = 2.490), while the greatest species similarity was observed between forest and coffee monoculture habitats (J = 0.464). Across all land-cover types, bird communities were dominated by insectivorous feeding guilds, accounting for 55% in coffee-based agroforestry, 44% in forest habitats, and 42% in coffee monoculture systems. Multivariate regression analyses revealed that vegetation attributes (diversity and density) and environmental variables (altitude, slope, temperature, and humidity) did not exert a significant influence on bird diversity. This pattern is attributed to pervasive anthropogenic pressures, including land-use homogenization, forest modification, and ongoing human disturbance. These findings underscore the need for systematic monitoring and improved land-management practices to mitigate anthropogenic impacts and enhance the ecological function of coffee-based landscapes and forest habitats in supporting avian biodiversity.

Abstract

Sustainable rural development faces significant challenges due to climate change, land degradation, and economic pressures, particularly in regions heavily reliant on agriculture. Integrated area development (IAD) is one approach considered capable of integrating economic, social, and environmental aspects through agroforestry and strengthening local institutions. The IAD program is one part of the mainstreaming of the Social Forestry program of the Ministry of Forestry. However, empirical evidence regarding the specific role of community capacity in natural resource management as a mediator of IAD success remains limited. The purpose of this study is a quantitative causal analysis of the influence of economic welfare (X1) and natural resource management capacity (X2) on the success of IAD (Y1), as well as further research related to the mediating role of X2. Forty-two respondents were purposively selected for analysis using the SEM-PLS method, with natural resource management capacity and IAD success (Y1) as the main variables. The R-square value (0.618) and the goodness-of-fit (0.611) indicate that the research model is strong and relevant. Of the two existing hypotheses, all of them are proven significant; namely, increasing natural resource management capacity (X2) influences the success of IAD (Y1), and increasing community welfare (X1) influences increasing natural resource management capacity (X2) and also the success of IAD (Y1), where X2 is a mediating variable. This study argues that the policy for the success of IAD (Y1) in improving welfare must be explicitly implemented and directed toward strengthening community capacity for natural resource management. Abstract

Climate change is a global issue that requires mitigation strategies in various sectors, including forestry. Agroforestry, which combines trees with agricultural crops, is considered a strategy that can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by increasing carbon storage. This study aims to estimate and analyze the amount of carbon stored in three different land cover types found in a landscape of forest management unit (FMU), namely agroforestry coffee, monoculture coffee, and forest. Carbon stock analysis was conducted using a non-destructive approach on 36 sample plots evenly distributed across the three land cover types. The results showed that the highest carbon stock was found in forested area, followed by agroforestry coffee and monoculture coffee. However, the agroforestry system showed a fairly high carbon storage potential and was close to forest land, especially due to the presence of species such as Swietenia macrophylla and Coffea canephora. These findings indicate that the agroforestry system has great potential in climate change mitigation strategies by increasing carbon stocks, making it worthy of being an alternative to support forest conservation and rehabilitation.
