Abstract

Although studies on the development of higher order thinking skills (HOTS) as part of Bloom’s revised taxonomy have grown significantly among adult learners, little is known about its use for teaching English to young learners. In the Indonesian context, HOTS is mandated by the scientific-based 2013 national curriculum. This study investigates the development of HOTS strategies and possible challenges through storytelling among seventh grade students to improve their speaking ability. This Classroom Action Research (CAR) obtains data from classroom observations, interviews with the teachers and students, and analysis of lesson plans. The findings reveal that, in its simple form, HOTS in storytelling was developed in young English learners through open-ended question, a strategy which enables students to practice speaking through giving opinion, comment, and imagination while analyzing and evaluating the story. However, due to their limited language competence and unfamiliarity with the story context, students still find difficulties in creating their own stories, the highest level of educational objective. The study finally comes up with ways to engage students in storytelling while developing their HOTS.

Abstract

Translating English songs into Javanese language both semantically and emotionally presents a challenge to translators because regional differences always limits some linguistic and cultural aspects. Here, Pentul Kustik band attempts to provide a good English-Javanese song translation that can help Javanese people to understand the song and popularize it. Low’s Pentathlon Approach (2005) highlights several unique aspects of translating lyrics, which cover the elements of singability, sense, naturalness, rhythm, and rhyme. This study uses Low’s theory and assesses the quality of English-Javanese translation of song lyrics The object of this study is 15 English-Javanese song translation by Pentul Kustik Band. There are 328 data analyzed. The result shows that 223 data (68.09%) are considered singable and 105 data (32.02%) are considered less singable. In the aspect of sense, 142 data(46.30%) were considered having less accurate sense, while 186% data (53.70%) having accurate sense. In addition, 252 data (78.02%) are found to be natural and only 71 data (22.08%) are said to be less natural. The rhythm analysis indicates 123 data (37.50%) uses addition, 115 data (35.06%) uses reduction and 90 data(27.44%) preserves the original syllable numbers. The rhymes found in this study have 3 patterns. First, the translator replicates the sound and the pattern of the original song rhyme into the translated version. Second, the translator preserves the pattern of the original rhyme but modifies the sound used in the translated version. Third, some translations are found as half-rhymed or unrhymed free verses.

Abstract

In classroom interaction, we sometimes find misunderstanding between teacher and student or among the students. Grice said that cooperative principles can lead the speakers and hearers to uncooperative conversation and misunderstanding about the message delivered (Grice: 1989). Based on that theory, an investigation about observance and non-observance of the maxim should be done to understand how they apply the cooperative principles in classroom interaction. The objective of the studies are: (1) to analyze EFL classroom interaction in order to explain the way cooperative principles are applied, (2) to analyze EFL classroom interaction in order to explain the way participants violate the maxim (3) to analyze the most frequent violation in non-observance of the maxim. In this study, I use descriptive qualitative method. The data of this study was the transcription of EFL classroom interaction between teacher and students. The interaction was natural interaction without any intervention from me. The findings of this research showed that teachers and students not only observed the maxim but also violate the maxim in the EFL classroom interaction.

Abstract

Web comic is one of media of communication that can attract both children and adults. It may contain humor. Humor itself may be created by flouting the cooperative principles. This study aimed to explore the types of maxims flouting of Grice’s maxims in Pearls before Swine web comic and their contributions to create humor in the comic. This study was descriptive qualitative research in the form of discourse analysis. 30 episodes of the comic were used as data. The data were then collected and analyzed under three big steps proposed by Miles and Huberman (1994, p. 10). The results of the study revealed that all types of maxims were flouted in web comic. The most prominent flouting was the flouting of relevance maxim, then followed by the flouting of quantity maxim, manner maxim, and quality maxim became the least maxim that was flouted. Maxim of quality contributed to create humor as in the flouting there were sarcastic words which were intentionally used to trigger funny situation. The use of flouting of quantity maxim was indicated on the use of exaggeration which enhanced the information and blown thing up beyond the response needed. Relevance maxim was flouted by using both facetiousness and repartee. Meanwhile, in the flouting of manner maxim, the contributions were on the use of insult and pun.

Abstract

The aims of this study were to analyze the types of politeness strategies realized by student debaters and how the Indonesian Vs Malaysian student debaters used politeness strategies in the debate competition. The data of this research were taken from youTube that video series of debate competition “WSDC 2018 R2: Indonesia VS Malaysia.” The study used a descriptive qualitative method which was analyzed using the politeness strategies propossed by (Brown and Levinson, 1987). The subjects in this study were 6 student debaters (2 teams) from Malaysia and Indonesia who participated in the 2018 World Schools Debating Championship (WSDC). This study found that most of the student debaters used positive politeness strategies to deliver their arguments appropriately. There were four types of politeness strategies realized by the debaters. Sub-strategies of positive politeness were mostly used by Indonesian debaters. They used sub-strategies of positive politeness to keep the hearer's positive face, to safe opinions when delivering arguments clearly as the opposition team and make the preposition team agreed with their insight. Malaysians used off-record strategy dominantly. They used inviting implicatures to imply meanings.

Abstract

This study focuses on the analysis of humour creations based on the Grice’s cooperative maxim flouting. It applies descriptive qualitative study where we examined the utterances in Incredibles 2 were flouted to create humour. The results of the study showed that (1) There were 7 kinds of humour created from 19 flouting of quality maxims. (2) There were also 7 kinds of humour created from 45 flouting of quantity maxims. (3) There were only 9 kinds of humour created from 57 flouting of manner maxims. (4) On the flouting of relation maxims, all 11 humour categories were fulfilled from 59 flouting of relation maxims. Furthermore, it is suggested that through the occurance of maxim flouting in the movie especially animation genre which is addressed to the audience gives the knowledge about conversational implicatures. With regard to the creation of humour, it is suggested that the humour is not only a deviation of the cooperative principle and its maxims. Other theory of pragmatics can also be used to analyze the humour such as, politeness principle and also the acts of speech acts.

Abstract

Translation in Indonesia is not only used in literary or scientific texts, but also in an audio visual field such as a movie. Many movies in Indonesia come from other countries and use English language. In this case, movie subtitling is needed to make the audience understand the subtitles more easily. This study analyzed the subtitles of a movie called The English Teacher. This study used a descriptive qualitative method and employed documentation and questionnaire to collect data. The English and Indonesian movie scripts were distributed to Indonesian adult target readers to examine the techniques and its quality. In this study, a theory from Molina and Albir (2002) was used to analyze the techniques and the quality assessment was based on a theory from Nababan (2012). There were 12 techniques found in the subtitles. The most dominant technique used by the translator was literal. To analyze the translation quality, 18 respondents participated as the raters; 3 expert readers and 15 adults target readers. The results revealed that there were 1286 data. Based on Nababan, the maximum score of the quality was 3, while the average score of accuracy, acceptability, and readability was 2.67, 2.79, and 2.86. This study also found a relation between types of techniques employed in translation and its quality. It can be concluded that the qualities of the subtitles were accurate, acceptable, and readable.

Abstract

The research aims to describe the kinds of translation errors made by vocational school students in translating analytical exposition text from English into Indonesian. The method used in the research was descriptive qualitative. The subject of the research was the eleventh graders of Fashion Program of SMK Al Asror Semarang. An analytical exposition text consisting of 5 paragraphs (source texts) and all of its’ translations in Indonesian (the target texts) were used in the research to find out the translation errors. Then the researchers classified them into 5 kinds of translation errors according to Vilar et al. (2006, p. 698). The results of the research revealed that there were 232 translation errors found in students’ translation. There were translation errors in the form of incorrect word (60.3%), punctuation (26.3%), missing word (6.0 %), word order (5.2%), and unknown words (2.2%). In conclusion, the three most prominent error categories made by the students were incorrect word, punctuation, and missing word errors.

In daily life, when people interact, they sometimes use humorous utterances in the conversation. Humor may occur because the speakers flout Grice’s maxims. This study aims to describe how Grice’s maxims flout in the humorous utterances in American Situation Comedy 2 Broke Girls in Season 6 Episode 3-9 and the humorous utterances usually contain laughter. The finding of this study shows that all types of maxims were flouted by the actors and there are different language styles involved in the conversations. The maxim which is flouted the most is quantity and the language style which is found the most is hyperbole. The contents of situation which cause the actors to flout Grice’s maxims are as follows; the actors flout maxim of quality when they say something which is blatantly untrue or they lacks adequate. Then, in flouting of maxim of quantity, the actors sometimes give too little information and too much information. The third, the actors flouts maxim of manner when they say ambiguous, sometime being obscure. Last, the actors flout the maxim of relation if they say something irrelevant in responding to the previous topic. This study can be concluded that Grice’s maxims flouted in humorous utterances and the language styles are also found. The most dominant maxim that flouted is quantity.
