Abstract

Betel nut (Areca catechu L.) is a natural material that has antibacterial activity content against Streptococcus mutans and Staphylococcus aureus. Under these conditions, betel nuts were formulated in a toothpaste that has antibacterial activity.This study aims to determine the antibacterial activity of betel nut extract in toothpaste with various concentrations of 1.5%, 3% and 4.5% and to determine the effective concentration of betel nut extract in toothpaste that meets the physical quality of chemical and antibacterial activity against Streptococcus mutans and Staphylococcus aureus. The research design used was a completely randomized design (CRD). Extraction was done by maceration using ethanol 96%. Viscous extract obtained in the preparation of toothpaste formulated with a concentrations of 1.5%, 3% and 4.5%. All tested formula toothpaste physical quality of chemical (organoleptic, homogeneity, pH, viscosity and foaming) and antibacterial activity. The data obtained in the physical quality of chemical testing were analyzed descriptively and antibacterial activity data were statistically analyzed using One Way ANOVA at 95% confidence level, followed by Duncan test using SPSS. The test results show that the antibacterial toothpaste with betel nut extract concentrations of 1.5%, 3% and 4.5% show antibacterial activity against Streptococcus mutans and Staphylococcus aureus. Formula toothpaste as an antibacterial effective against bacteria test is F3 with betel nut extract concentration of 4.5%, which result in the diameter of the inhibition of Streptococcus mutans by 11.37 mm and 20.03 mm for Staphylococcus aureus. The test results show all the physical quality of chemical toothpaste betel nut extracts meet the physical quality of chemical toothpaste

Abstract

Lycopene is a class of keratonoid that have been proven has antioxidant activity but has limited solubility in water. So as to boost their solubility, in this study conducted in the form of microemulsion formulations. This study aims to get a tomato lycopene extract microemulsion which is stable and has antioxidant effects. The research was initiated to test the antioxidant power of tomato lycopene extract in vitro against DPPH. Tomato lycopene extract microemulsion is formulated based on the optimization of the composition of the base consisting of the VCO as the oil phase, tween 80 as surfactant and glycerin as cosurfactant. Preparations produced were tested for antioxidant activity and their physical and chemical stability testing which include: organoleptic, viscosity, globule size and pH during 28 days of storage. The results showed that tomato lycopene extract formula microemulsion stable composition of tomato lycopene extract 0.3%, VCO 15%, tween 80% and 35% glycerin. The test results obtained physical stability of the microemulsion formula elected tomato lycopene extract has a distinctive scent of aromatic, orange, thick, globule size of <5 μm, viscosity (600, 33 ± 69.29 to 746 cPs ± 8.32), and pH ( 6.27 ± 0.20 to 6.79 ± 0.10). As very strong antioxidant activity with IC50 value of 29.07 ppm.

Abstract

Soursop (Annona muricata L.) and gotu kola (Centella asiatica L.Urb) is a plant that can be used as a laxative medicine kidney stones. This is because of the content of bioactive compounds including flavonoids, especially the leaf section. The use of a combination of soursop leaf extract and gotu kola can improve their effectiveness in order to remove calcium kidney stones. Therefore, this study aims to determine the activity and to determine dose combination soursop leaf ethanol extract (SS) and gotu kola leaf (GK) which is effective for dissolving potassium kidney stones. Extracts prepared by maceration method using ethanol 96% then subsequently tested phytochemical screening and thin layer chromatography profiles on each extract. Results chromatogram showed the extract containing flavonoids. Testing the activity of the combination of soursop and gotu kola extract performed using seven treatments, combination 1 (SS 1% + GK 7.5% ), a combination of 2 (SS 0.5% + GK 3.75%), the combination of 3 (SS 0, 25% + GK 1.875%), single soursop leaf extract (1%), single gotu kola extract (7.5%), negative control (aquadest) and positive control (Batugin elixir). Kidney stones are then put as much as 100 mg in each treatment and incubated for 6 hours (37 ℃). Results filtrate then didestruksi and dissolved calcium levels measured using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. The results showed the combination soursop leaf ethanol extract and gotu kola leaf extract with a combination of 2 (SS 0.5% + GK 3.75%) is an effective combination of the ability to dissolve calcium kidney stones in vitro.

Abstract

Cocor Bebek (Kalanchoe pinnata L.) is a medicinal plant that has been used as traditional medicine for long period, used to fight fever, but it empirically leaves of Tembelekan (Lantana camara L.) are also generally primarily used to treat fever. Research on the effects of the combination of Cocor Bebek’s leaf extract (Kalanchoe pinnata L.) and the leaf extract of tembelekan (Lantana camara L.) Pers on male guinea pig (Cavia porcellus) is induced peptone 5% at a dose of 150 mg / kg body weight. With the aim to determine the effect of the combination and determine the effects of the most effective as an antipyretic. Extracts prepared by maceration method using ethanol 95%. Marmots were divided into 4 groups. Each guinea pig was induced using peptone 5%. The first group was given Na CMC as a negative control group 2nd given a combination of one dose combinations (50 + 720). Group 3 was given a second dose combination (100 + 720). Group-4 were given a 3-dose combination (150 + 720). Temperature measurement is carried out for 2 hours with a 30 minute interval. Data were analyzed temperature measurements were statistically analyzed using ANOVA (Analisys Of Variance). The research result was addressing, that the combination of extracts can reduce fever. The combination is most effective as an antipyretic is cocor duck leaf extract 50 mg and 720 mg tembelekan leaf extract (50 + 720).

Abstract

Research on the formulation of preparations mouthwash prevention of dental plaque extract of cocoa beans also has been tested in Streptococcus mutans bacteria by variations in the concentration of glycerin as a humectant in preparation which aims to determine the effect of different concentrations of glycerin as a humectant to the physical properties, chemical properties and inhibition zone Streptococcus mutans bacteria in mouthwash formula and to know the mouthwash formula that has the physical quality and the highest antibacterial activity. The method used includes the step of extraction of cocoa beans, preparation of a mouthwash with 4 formula using variations of glycerin F1 (0%), F2 (15%), F3 (20%) and F4 (25%) followed by an evaluation formula that includes organoleptic tests, pH test and the test of inhibition diameter. Tests performed on days 0, 7, 14 and 21. The results showed the concentration of glycerin as a humectant in a mouthwash formula cocoa seed extract has an effect on the diameter of inhibition zone, but did not have a significant effect on the physical and chemical properties of cocoa seed extracts mouthwash, The concentration of glycerin which meets the physical quality and the most excellent antibacterial activity that is 15% contained in the formula 2.

Abstract

Telah dilakukan penelitian tentang formulasi dalam bentuk sediaan masker gel peel-off. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui konsentrasi optimum polivinil alkohol sebagai pembentuk film dan propilen glikol sebagai humektan terhadap sifat fisik dan kimia sediaan masker gel peel-off sari buah labu kuning, stabilitas formula optimummasker gel dan aktivitas antioksidan sediaan. Formula optimum yang didapatkan yaitu formula 1 dengan konsentrasi PVA 10% dan PG 10% kemudian dilakukan evaluasi karakteristik mutu fisik kimia dan stabilitas meliputi pengujian daya sebar, pH, viskositas dan lama pengeringan. Pengamatan dilakukan tiap minggu selama 4 minggu penyimpanan pada suhu ruang. Data yang diperoleh dianalisis secara deskriptif dan secara statistik menggunakan metode paired sample t test. Hasil penelitian masker gel peel-off pada formula optimum menunjukkan sediaan stabil selama penyimpanan dimana tidak terjadi perubahan yang signifikan pada tiap parameter uji. Aktivitas antioksidan gel masker peel-off tergolong kuat yang dinyatakan dengan peresen peredaman formula optimum pada hari ke- 2 adalah 75,18% dan 73,37% pada hari ke- 30 setelah penyimpanan pada suhu ruang

Abstract

Benalu batu (Begonia sp.) is used as traditional medicine by Wana tribe in Central Sulawesi to treat various diseases, including cancer. In an effort to search potential anticancer drugs from natural sources, investigation was conducted on the cytotoxic activity of Begonia sp. methanol extract against cervic cancer cells (HeLa) and breast cancer cells (T47D) and identification of the chemical compound groups in methanol extract that is responsible for the anticancer activity. Investigations including the extraction of Begonia sp. dried herb by soxhletation using methanol, followed by evaporation on rotary vapor until viscous extract gained. The cytotoxic test were carried out by tetrazolium bromide (MTT) method. The concentration series of Begonia sp. methanol extract were 250, 125, 62.5 and 31.25 μg /mL. Results showed that the Begonia sp. methanol extract inhibited the growth of cervic cancer cells (HeLa) (IC50 = 70.97 μg/mL) stronger than inhibition on breast cancer cells (T47D) (IC50 = 122.21 μg/mL). Analysis of chemical compound groups in the methanol extract using thin-layer chromatography (TLC) method indicated that polyphenolic flavonoid might be the main compound responsible for the anticancer activity.

Abstract

The knowledge level of pharmacy students about corticosteroid drugs is crucial since corticosteroid drugs have many dangerous side effects. This study aims to determine the knowledge level of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences Pharmacy students at Tadulako University Palu regarding corticosteroid drugs and the factors that influence them. The study used a cross-sectional method using a questionnaire to 250 active students of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Tadulako University Pharmacy study class 2017, 2018, and 2019. The sampling technique is purposive sampling. Descriptive data analysis used the chi-square test. The results showed that the knowledge level of pharmacy students about corticosteroid drugs showed that 36.4% of respondents had good knowledge, 31.6% had enough knowledge, and 32% had insufficient knowledge. The results of statistical tests showed a significant relationship between the knowledge level and age with a batch of pharmacy students (p-value <0.05). The conclusion is that Pharmacy students of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at Tadulako University have good knowledge regarding the dominant corticosteroid drugs and that the age and class of the students affect the knowledge level.

Abstract

Daun sendok (Plantago major L.) merupakan tanaman yang dipercayai memiliki khasiat tanaman obat dengan kandungan senyawa kimia yang diyakini memiliki efek potensial sebagai antidiabetes dan antioksidan. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian lanjutan yang bertujuan mengetahui efek dan menentukan dosis efektif ekstrak daun sendok terhadap penurunan kadar glukosa darah tikus putih jantan model hiperkolesterolemia diabetes. Hewan uji yang digunakan adalah tikus putih jantan sebanyak 30 ekor dibagi menjadi 6 kelompok terdiri dari kelompok normal, kelompok kontrol negatif, kelompok kontrol positif dan 3 kelompok uji yang diberikan ekstrak etanol daun sendok dengan dosis masing-masing 500 mg/kg BB, 750 mg/kg BB, dan 1000 mg/kg BB. Model hewan hiperkolesterol dibuat menggunakan induksi pakan diet tinggi lemak selama 4 minggu dan induksi streptozotocin dosis 30 mg/kg BB. Perlakuan dilakukan selama 2 minggu. Data glukosa darah dianalisis menggunakan uji statistik One Way Anova dan uji lanjut Post Hoc Duncan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ekstrak etanol pada dosis 500 mg/kg BB merupakan dosis efektif dalam menurunkan kadar glukosa darah tikus putih jantan model hiperkolesterolemia yang sebanding dengan kontrol positif menggunakan metformin.
