Abstract

This study briefly reports classroom observations in one of EFL classes at English Studies Department of Islamic Tertiary Level of Education in  Bandung, Indonesia. The focus of the class was on Literal Reading.  The classroom observations were conducted in five class periods consecutively.  Having studied what was happening to the students, using a qualitative case study, the data collected through observation checklist and interview guide found that the lecturer designed various activities in teaching Literal Reading in the EFL class. The lecturer applied teaching activities in three stages: pre-reading, while-reading, and post-reading. The activities in the pre-reading were aimed at activating students’ schemata, generating students’ interest and trying to anticipate any difficult vocabularies.  The while-reading stage is to invite students to be involved at phonic method and mapping concept strategy. The post-listening stage is to internalize what they have read with other language skills (e.g. writing and speaking) and to check students’ comprehension.

Abstract

This study interprets the ‘dancing’ as symbols of freedom expressed by a Dutch dancer, Mata Hari (alias Margaretha Geertruida Zelle) in Remy Sylado’s Namaku Mata Hari, a protagonist novel.  The data in this study are sentences or paragraphs containing dancing as symbols of freedom.  Those sentences or paragraphs were collected by conducting library research through reading carefully the novel Namaku Mata Hari, coding each part of the novel showing the dancing as a symbols of freedom and the role of her id, ego and super ego, classifying data into symbols proposed by Hayek’s (1960) and Hospers’ (1984) theories, and analysing the data simultaneously.  The result shows that the dancing as freedom symbols is interpreted in a lot of expressions: dancing expressing her freedom of being life, of taking back her rights, of avoiding Western aesthetic principles, of being peaceful state of mind, of finding her desire, of gaining a deep hypnotic trance, of gaining humanity instead of being prejudice of her nationality, and of avoiding Western civilization.

Abstract

One of the types of interpreting is known as consecutive interpreting. Regarding the modes on how the message is rendered, the interpreter begins to interpret the utterances from the speaker only after the speaker has finished speaking. It is also believed that the procedures of consecutive interpreting involve certain stages. Thus, this small-scale research is intended to explore and discover the procedure of consecutive interpreting. Qualitative design was employed to gather and analyze the data by utilizing open-ended interview in which the interviewee was a professional interpreter. The evidence of this research revealed that there is no determined procedure to perform interpreting since every experts, researchers, and interpreters has their own set of approaches and practices for conducting interpretation consecutively. In general, the steps of consecutive interpreting consist of three stages namely pre interpreting, while interpreting and post interpreting. The procedures of consecutive interpreting are concerned with the interpreter's preparation such as preparing the material, briefing, and professional ethics, the agreement or contract between the organizer and the interpreter, strategy if interpret happened to make mistake, and, most importantly, note-taking techniques.

Abstract

The study employed the pre-test and post-test control group design focusing on strengthening reading comprehension and reading interest during the pandemic time using WhatsApp platform through survey, question, read, recite and review (SQ3R) strategy. The participants were the students of ninth graders of MTsN 6 Cianjur who were selected randomly to be the experimental and control classes. The instruments were the pre-post reading comprehension test and reading interest questionnaire especially on three dimensions; situational, individual and topic. The validity and reliability of both instruments were confirmed before applying them in the study. The analysis revealed that significant score (2 tailed) or (P) of post-reading comprehension test obtained by both experimental and control classes was 0%. Since it was less than 5%, the significant difference was confirmed, and the result quality of experimental class on reading comprehension was higher than control class. It decided that SQ3R strategy had strengthened reading comprehension skill. Moreover, all significant scores (2 tailed) or (P) of post-reading interest questionnaire on three dimensions obtained by both experimental and control classes were 0%. As they were less than 5%, the significant difference was confirmed, and the result quality of experimental class on reading interest was higher than control class. It exposed that SQ3R strategy had strengthened reading interest. Therefore, SQ3R strategy strengthened reading comprehension skill and reading interest using WhatsApp platform. Furthermore, SQ3R strategy was an alternative reading strategy in the pandemic time. However, the stakeholder should support it by providing free internet access and other requirements, and the study should be deepened by conducting other research especially qualitative study to enrich the scope of research. Keywords: SQ3R strategy; reading comprehension; reading interest; pandemic time; WhatsApp.

Abstract

This study was grounded in a mixed-method design that aimed to analyze the differences between learning speaking taught using Instagram-mediated project-based learning and those taught using conventional techniques. In addition, this study was also conducted to investigate the challenges faced and explore the strategies given by students in solving problems in the application of Instagram-mediated project-based learning techniques. This study involved 12th-grade students who were randomly selected to be the control and experimental groups. The research instruments used were pre-speaking tests and post-speaking tests to measure the level of students' speaking skills and a questionnaire to investigate the challenges faced and explore the strategies provided by students in Instagram-mediated project-based learning conducted by the experimental group. The significance score was 0.000 smaller than 0.05. This confirmed that the Instagram-mediated project-based learning technique proved to have a significant difference. In qualitative stage of analysis, it was revealed that the challenges the students faced were categorized into language barriers, video making, and external factors. From the results of this study, it can be concluded that the Instagram-mediated project-based learning technique was proven to be effective in improving students' speaking skills. Therefore, school policymakers can provide a wider internet network to support this learning technique. However, the results of this study recommended similar research on speaking skills in other materials in more depth with a wider scope. Keywords: Instagram; project-based learning; MALL; speaking; mixed-method.

Abstract

The pandemic situation shifted the learning process from offline to online. It challenges the students in English learning, especially in learning their speaking ability. However, the students manipulated the strategies by utilizing online platforms or mobile phone applications accordingly to their learning experience. This study investigates students' language learning strategies and how the strategy is applied in learning speaking ability. The case study was carried out in a senior high school. The respondents 64 were chosen purposively to be involved in this study. The instruments of data collection were conducted by questionnaire and interview under Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL). The results showed that 63 (95%) of students used metacognitive strategies in the form of centering learning process, arranging, and planning learning strategies. Moreover, 61 or 91% of students applied practicing, receiving, and sending messages of group cognitive strategies to motivate them to practice their speaking ability during online learning. Furthermore, less than 80% applied social, memory, affective, and compensation. It recommended that the teacher be a facilitator by providing a good stimulus for the students to motivate themselves to be self-regulated.
