Abstract

The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in translation services has transformed the landscape of linguistic studies. This study assesses the effectiveness of AI-driven translation tools among English Literature students at UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung, focusing on translation accuracy, usability, and impact on language learning. Using a mixed-methods approach, the research collected quantitative data through questionnaires and supported it with a literature review. Findings indicate that 96.6% of students regularly use AI translation tools, with a majority finding them helpful. However, concerns about over-reliance on these tools and their potential negative impact on language skill development were noted. The study highlights the dual role of AI tools in enhancing learning while requiring human oversight for accuracy and contextual relevance. Recommendations for improving AI tools include ensuring contextually accurate translations, enhancing vocabulary databases, and integrating human input. Overall, while AI translation tools significantly aid students' academic activities, a balanced approach is crucial to avoid dependency and ensure the development of independent language skills

Abstract

This qualitative study focused on reporting online teaching and learning English writing and identifying the reasons beyond learning loss in the pandemic. It focused on 50 third-grade students, 4 English teachers, and 5 parents at an upper secondary school level in Sukabumi. They were selected purposively. The instruments used were questionnaires, observations, and interviews. The results revealed that online learning significantly changed the teaching preparation and process. Teachers and students had to adapt to new pedagogical approaches, from face-to-face to online classes. Effective online English learning requires well-structured, scheduled, and coordinated learning activities to enhance effectiveness. The pandemic posed challenges to online learning, including technological issues, a lack of discipline, and creative activities. English learners faced difficulties such as collaborative planning, accessibility issues, and multimedia resource use, whereas parents and teachers faced difficulties in supervising and managing work schedules and providing support. Online education had a significant impact on English learning, enhancing interaction through complicated materials and addressing the lack of face-to-face interaction and internet connectivity.

Abstract

This study identifies how exposition texts in Grade XI English textbooks contribute to character building using the 4C paradigm. Curriculum Merdeka is the guideline for promoting student autonomy and a pedagogical shift towards the 21st-century soft skills framework. This study employed qualitative case study analysis and interviews to evaluate the exposition texts of Ministry of Education-approved textbooks, assessing their capacity to enhance character building in eleventh-grade students. The case study analysis reveals that exposition texts primarily address ethical issues and social concerns, providing several opportunities for character education. However, the associated learning activities demonstrated the consistency of the 4C paradigm, with critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity regularly included in the process of character development during the teaching-learning process. Expository text should be used to improve moral reasoning, perspective-taking abilities, and ethical awareness for eleventh-grade students at school. English textbooks provide students with the selection and use of exposition texts to maximize their contribution to overall character building in secondary education. The implementation of 4C in the activities included in the English textbook enables students to be more aware of their environment in a wise manner.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the impact of the flipped classroom method on students' learning engagement, especially visual, auditory and kinesthetic learning styles, considering their learning styles such as visual, auditory, and kinesthetic (VAK). Specifically, it compares students' engagement levels when learning occurs at home versus in the college classroom. Using a mixed-methods design, data were collected from 30 college students (aged 18-24) through a questionnaire consisting of 14 closed-ended and 1 open-ended question. The findings revealed that visual learners showed consistent positive engagement in both settings, with a preference for visual materials that supported their learning. Auditory learners demonstrated higher engagement during in-class sessions with live discussions, while kinesthetic learners exhibited higher engagement during hands-on activities in the classroom. The findings suggest that the flipped classroom model is particularly effective for visual learners, both at home and in the classroom. This research provides implications for educators to design inclusive flipped classroom experiences by incorporating learning media and activities tailored to diverse learning styles, ensuring effective engagement both at home and in the classroom.

Abstract

Mobile phone use has been studied in its connection with foreign language learning by many researchers concerned in Mobile Assisted language learning (MALL) for more than a decade. In Indonesian Islamic higher education context, the issues of MALL  has not been discussed extensively.  To respond to this need, this study was aimed at investigating the following research question:  1) How do students use their mobile phone to learn English Monolingual Dictionary (EMD) application?; 2)How do students use their mobile phone to support English language learning?. This study employed the qualitative method using case study. To collect data, this study applied observation to find out students’ engagement in using the mobile phone for learning EMD application. Students participated in this study were 40 students. Findings showed that students were able to use the mobile phone to use EMD application in English language learning (ELL). They demonstrated skill in operating EMD application which was realized in their knowledge concerning, pronunciation, grammar and meaning information when searching a particular word. In addition, there were many features that students seized from the mobile phone for English language learning. They used audio feature to operate EMD from mobile phone to boost listening skill. Their mobile phone facilitated them to record video project presenting their vocabulary learning. These activities could be done by their mobile phone existence as an introductory effort toward MALL implementation in ELL in Islamic Higher education.

Abstract

The research focused on using Cambridge One LMS as an e-learning platform for Grade 3 English students at Semesta Bilingual Elementary School in Semarang. The main aim was to understand teachers' and students' challenges when using the Cambridge One LMS for English learning and find solutions. The researcher interviewed school principals, curriculum representatives, 2 English teachers, and four students from grades 3B and 3C at Semesta Bilingual Elementary School to collect data. The researcher also gave questionnaires to 40 students from classes 3B and 3C using Google Forms. Additionally, the researcher observed how Cambridge One LMS was used in English lessons. The questionnaire results showed that students positively viewed using the Cambridge One LMS for English lessons. However, the interviews revealed that teachers faced difficulties due to a lack of knowledge of technology, and the students had limited access to the Internet and computers or laptops. To address this, the school ensures effective use of the Cambridge One LMS by organizing workshops or training sessions provided by itself or a Cambridge representative. It offers comprehensive user guides or online tutorials for detailed instructions and access to support resources, such as help desks or customer support, which becomes beneficial for teachers' guidance. The school encourages collaboration among teachers familiar with the system to offer additional insights. Allowing time to explore the platform helps teachers become more comfortable and proficient. Finally, the school requests parents provide students with a computer or laptop for home use. Additionally, the school will enhance internet access and expand the computer lab facilities to support the teaching and learning process.
