Abstract

The objectives of this research were: (1) to investigate rhetorical moves employed in high-reputable ELT research article abstracts; (2) to investigate research gap strategies employed in high-reputable ELT research article abstracts; (3) to explore how do authors establish rhetorical moves and research gap strategies using linguistic features in high-reputable ELT research article abstracts. This research involved mixed method analysis. The source of the data consisted of 100 research article abstracts published in high-reputable journals. The researcher applied Hyland’s (2000) framework for analyzing rhetorical moves and Arianto’s (2021) framework for analyzing research gap strategies. The researcher read and code each of the segments within the abstract that characterize each of the moves. The result of this research reveals that: (1) the most frequent move was product moves with the most frequent moves pattern I-P-M-Pr-C; (2) the most frequent research gap strategy was the strategy-2 (revealing limitation of the previous research); (3) the linguistic features addressed in rhetorical moves and research gap strategies were indicated by the using of discourse markers, phrases, and tenses emerged in every segment within the abstracts. The researcher found newly emerged form within the product moves, called as ‘evaluating findings’ which may be worth considering for the future studies. The researcher also suggests the future researchers to explore the study of centrality claims or any promotional techniques used by authors in promoting research articles through abstracts. Abstract

This study aims to find out pre-service English teachers’ challenges of teaching practicum and how they overcome them. Interviews as the instruments used in this study and employed multiple case studies. Pre-service English teachers who participated in AJARMI program in the academic year 2022–2023 served as the study's subjects. Three PSETs participated in interviews. The findings of this study were analyzed using thematic analysis. The PSETs faced challenges related to students' behaviour, preparation of instructional materials, and mentoring. Then they handled them with organizing lessons, acting as an assertive teacher, devising a backup plan, and adapting to the school system. Keywords: Pre-service English Teachers, Teaching Practicum

Abstract

This study aims to determine: students' perceptions of the distribution of attention given by lecturers to male and female students, students' tendencies towards gender-based grouping in class, tendencies to use gender inclusive or gender exclusive in sentences, gender groups that dominate communicative activities in class, and gender groups that initiate more conversations in communicative activities. The method used is a descriptive method. The sample was selected purposively. The research instruments consisted of questionnaires, checklists, and tests. Data from the questionnaires and checklists were analyzed using percentages, and test data were analyzed using averages. The results of the study showed that: the distribution of lecturers' attention to male and female students was relatively the same, students tended to choose to work in mixed-sex groups, students tended to use gender inclusive or generic use at the word/phrase level, and gender fair at the sentence level; male students were still relatively more dominant in communicative activities, and in mixed-sex communicative activities, male students initiated more conversations.Keywprds: Perception, Gender Based, Class Interaction

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the question-and-answer teaching method in improving students’ self-confidence in speaking English. This research employed a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental one-group pre-test and post-test design. The sample consisted of 34 students from class X.E4 at SMAN 5 Jeneponto, selected through purposive sampling. The research instrument was a speaking confidence test assessed using five self-confidence indicators adapted from Brown (2004), namely eye contact, facial expression, voice volume, fluency, and willingness to speak. The data were analyzed using a Paired Sample T-Test and N- Gain Score. The t-test result showed a significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), indicating a statistically significant difference between the students’ pre-test and post- test scores. The average N-Gain score was 0.19, which falls into the low category. Nevertheless, there was a positive shift in students’ confidence levels—from “Not Confident” to “Moderately Confident.” This low gain may have been caused by the short duration of the treatment. The study concludes that the question-and-answer method is effective in enhancing students’ speaking confidence, especially by creating an interactive and supportive classroom environment. Keywords: Question-and-Answer Teaching Method, Speaking Self-Confidence.
