Abstract

BackgroundKretek cigarettes contain less nicotine and tar than conventional cigarettes. Exposure to cigarette smoke occurs mainly in the respiratory tract, resulting in histometric changes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of filtered kretek cigarette smoke on bronchial histometric measurements in male Sprague-Dawley rats. MethodsAn experimental laboratory study was conducted involving 18 male Sprague-Dawley rats, aged 2-3 months, ranging from 150 to 250 grams in body weight. They were randomized into group 1 (controls) and experimental groups 2 and 3. Group 2 was exposed to filtered cigarette smoke at a dose of 1 stick/day and group 3 to 2 sticks/day. Treatment time for all groups was 30 days. Observation of bronchial histometric measurements of the lumen include, length, width, area, and perimeter. In addition, the bronchial mucosal and smooth muscle layers were also measured. The one way-ANOVA test was used to analyze the data. ResultsThe mean area and mean perimeter of the bronchial lumen of the rats were significantly greater in group 1 than in groups 2 and 3 (p=0.000). The mean bronchial smooth muscle area of the rats in group 1 was smaller than the mean in group 2, which was in turn smaller than the mean in group 3 (p=0.000). Apparently the rats in the treatment groups had undergone bronchoconstriction. ConclusionExposure to filtered kretek cigarette smoke at a dose of 1 stick/day as well as 2 sticks/day for 30 days caused bronchial mucosal hyperplasia and bronchoconstriction in male rats.

Abstract

The coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) has become a challenge for the media world. Even though they have been declared cured, some Covid-19 survivors still have health complaints. Abnormal symptoms, signs, or clinical parameters that persist two weeks or more after the onset of COVID-19 and do not return to their initial healthy state are potentially considered long-term effects of the disease. Although such changes are primarily reported in people with severe and critical illness, lasting effects also occur in individuals with mild infections that do not require hospitalization. This study aims to explore the role of antioxidants on the pathogenesis of Covid19 and its relationship with SOD1, 2 and 3 genomic variations. Getting alternative biomarkers for long covid19 detection. Research Method: The research sample is blood and questionnaires that will be taken from respondents affected by Covid19 a maximum of 6 months before data collection is held. Furthermore, DNA isolation, DNA amplification, cutting with restriction enzymes, and DNA band documentation with gel electrophoresis will be carried out. Symptoms related to systemic are the most common symptoms found in respondents with Long Covid19. A total of 8 respondents had systemic related symptoms, namely weakness, lethargy and sweating, while skin-related complaints were found in three respondents and one respondent had lung-related complaints. The average SOD activity value of respondents was 2.19 U/ml. In this study, more symptoms of long COVID-19 were found associated with systemic and cardiovascular symptoms. The complaints were not differentiated by the sex of the respondents. The output draft will be processed immediately after getting other results.

Abstract

Galactose-1-phosphate uridyltransferase (GALT) is an important enzyme involved in galactose metabolism. Understanding the factors influencing GALT activity is critical to elucidate its physiological role and potential therapeutic implications in galactosemia. In developing new drugs, chicken intestine/liver powder can be used as an enzyme source, GALT, to treat galactosemia. Therefore, it is necessary to research the characterization of the GALT enzyme in chicken intestine and liver powder. In this study, we investigated the influence of temperature, pH, and substrate level on GALT enzyme activity using an experimental approach in vitro. The optimum pH extraction results show that the optimum pH for the extraction of the chicken intestine and liver GALT is pH 7, with activity values of 0.47 units/mL and 0.3953 units/mL, respectively. The optimum temperature for the extraction of chicken intestine and liver GALT is 37℃ with substrate hydrolysis capabilities of 0.48 U/mL and 0.57 U/mL, respectively. Meanwhile, the optimum substrate content is 400x. These insights provide a valuable foundation for further research aimed at comprehensively understanding GALT function, developing targeted interventions for disorders of galactose metabolism, and possible application in the development of new drugs for galactosemia

Abstract

Cervical cancer remains a major global health concern, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where barriers such as limited healthcare access, cultural stigma, and logistical challenges hinder routine screening. Human papillomavirus (HPV) self-sampling has emerged as a promising alternative to clinician-collected sampling, offering the potential to improve screening coverage and reduce the burden of cervical cancer. This scoping review aims to synthesize current evidence on the feasibility, effectiveness, and acceptability of HPV self-sampling, with a focus on its impact on screening uptake, psychological outcomes, and diagnostic accuracy. Following the PRISMA-ScR guidelines, a systematic search was conducted across PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus, resulting in the inclusion of five studies: four randomized controlled trials and one umbrella review. Findings indicate that self-sampling reduces anxiety associated with cervical screening, improves participation among underserved populations, and demonstrates high diagnostic concordance with clinician-collected samples. Behavioral interventions, such as pay-it-forward models, show potential to enhance sample return and feedback rates. However, challenges remain regarding effective triage strategies for HPV-positive cases, especially in resource-limited settings. The review supports the integration of self-sampling into national screening programs, emphasizing the need for culturally tailored approaches and continued research on cost-effective triage methods.

Abstract

The incidence of hypertension increases with age. Alterations in function and structure in peripheral vascular system are thought to be the cause of high prevalence of hypertension in the elderly. Holistic, patient-centered management of hypertension is needed to prevent deaths from heart failure. This community service aimed to find out the level of knowledge about hypertension in residents of Jembatan Lima Sub-district, Tambora District, West Jakarta. Using a questionnaire, the level of knowledge was studied in 48 participants cross-sectionally. Blood pressure measurements were also carried out to describe the incidence of hypertension in that area. There was a low level of knowledge about hypertension among participants and this had an impact on increasing the risk of hypertension. Fifty-two percent of participants had normal blood pressure, whereas 48% participants were diagnosed as hypertension. Based on demographic data of participants obtained during the event, age, sex, education level and type of work were significantly increasing the risk of hypertension. Results from this community service conclude that the lack of knowledge of hypertension especially in the elderly can increase the risk of hypertension. In order to improve the quality of managing hypertension in the elderly in Jembatan Lima Village, Tambora District, West Jakarta, it is recommended that counseling and discussion groups to be held annually, especially among the elderly.

Abstract

Adolescence is a crucial phase in individual growth and development, especially for young women, who experience significant physical and hormonal changes. These changes impact reproductive health, including the regularity of the menstrual cycle. Menstrual cycle irregularities can be an early manifestation of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), one of the most common endocrine disorders in women of reproductive age. Hyperandrogenism, ovulatory disorders, and polycystic ovarian morphology characterize PCOS. Its prevalence in adolescents ranges from 6–10% and tends to increase with lifestyle changes such as a high-calorie diet, lack of physical activity, and psychological stress. Pathophysiologically, PCOS involves complex interactions among genetic, epigenetic, and environmental factors that disrupt the balance of hormones LH, FSH, and AMH and cause insulin resistance. This condition triggers hyperandrogenism, inhibits follicular maturation, and leads to chronic anovulation. The diagnosis of PCOS in adolescents requires caution based on the Rotterdam Consensus (2003) and the 2018 International Guidelines, taking into account similarities to the physiological symptoms of puberty. PCOS is strongly linked to obesity, metabolic syndrome, and family history, with insulin resistance playing a significant role in its development. Elevated Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH) levels indicate the severity of PCOS and are associated with metabolic disorders. Therefore, a preventive, holistic approach that promotes a healthy lifestyle is essential for adolescents, including education on balanced nutrition, increased physical activity, and stress management. These measures are expected to decrease the occurrence of PCOS and long-term complications such as infertility and metabolic syndrome in young women in Indonesia.

Abstract

Lifestyle changes have contributed to the rising incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in major cities, including Jakarta. This condition requires thorough management, one aspect of which is long-term medication adherence. A primary factor that frequently triggers non-adherence is patients' limited understanding of antidiabetic drug side effects. This community service activity aimed to improve long-term medication adherence by strengthening patients' knowledge and understanding of antidiabetic drug side effects through education and direct consultation. The activity was carried out on March 6, 2026, in West Jakarta, using interactive counseling sessions and individual consultations. A total of 30 T2DM patients participated. Evaluation was performed through random blood glucose (RBG) measurement, pre-test and post-test assessments of knowledge on medication side effects consisting of 10 multiple-choice questions, and participatory observation. The results showed a statistically significant increase in the mean knowledge score from 62.3 to 84.7 (p<0.001). RBG testing revealed that 60% of participants had normal levels (<200 mg/dL), while the remaining 40% still exhibited hyperglycemia. During consultation sessions, chronic pain complaints were identified in several participants, potentially prompting unsupervised use of additional medications. The activity proceeded in an orderly manner with active participation from all attendees. The conclusion of this activity is that education and consultation proved effective in raising patient knowledge significantly as an initial step toward improving medication adherence; however, follow-up interventions addressing non-pharmacological management and pain management remain necessary.
