Abstract

Abstract Peron Village located on the western slopes of Mount Ungaran at an altitude of 700 meters above sea level, is in the upstream area of the Bodri Watershed, a priority watershed. Despite implementing an agroforestry system that combines forestry and agricultural crops, local farmers still rely heavily on synthetic herbicides containing glyphosate for weed control. This dependence poses serious risks to water quality, aquatic ecosystems, and the health of communities that rely on spring water. This community service program aims to improve ecological literacy and practical skills in making environmentally friendly herbicides using local ingredients such as coarse salt, vinegar, and sulfur. The activity was held at the Peron Village Hall with 25 participants representing the hamlets. The program included socialization of the concept of agroforestry, the theory of natural herbicides, and the practice of making organic herbicides using 1 liter of clean water, 500 g of coarse salt, 0.75 ounces of sulfur, and 100 ml of vinegar. The results showed that participants successfully produced an effective natural herbicide that controlled weeds within two days, albeit slower than synthetic herbicides, without damaging soil structure or polluting water sources. This success opens up opportunities for further development by utilizing agroforestry waste such as coffee husks as active ingredients, supporting the zero-waste concept and increasing the economic value of local commodities. This program aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals and can be replicated in other agroforestry areas in Indonesia.

Abstract

The Indonesian government mandates that science teachers must have competence in designing science experiments for learning purposes so that science content can be learned optimally by students while preparing them to have the ability to face the 21st century. This is development research that aims to develop a measurement instrument for science experiment design skills for prospective science teachers that meets good psychometric characteristics. The rubric development procedure refers to the Churches rubric development method, which consists of four stages: define, design, do, and debrief, involving 10 experts (lecturers and teachers) and 124 prospective science teachers as research participants. The results of exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis showed that the analytical rubric developed by measuring ten aspects, namely title, research objectives, relevant theories, variables, materials, equipment and instrumentation, method, an appropriate number of data, references, and systematic and technical writing was valid in content (CVI=.96), valid in construct (GFI=.94; RMSEA=.071; NFI=.99; CFI=1.00; PNFI=.91), and reliable (α=.968). The use of a standardized rubric certainly allows the assessment to provide consistent, accurate, and objective results and helps students understand what competencies they must achieve.

Abstract

Collaboration and communication are essential 21st-century skills. Observations and interviews suggest that these are among students in science learning are still not fully developed. This study aims to analyze the differences in collaboration and communication skills between the experimental and control classes and examine the relationship between these two skills through implementation of the Self-Organized Learning Environment (SOLE) model, integrating thinking actively in a social context (TASC). The research employed a quantitative method with a quasi-experimental design. The study groups being a pretest–posttest control group involving two seventh-grade classes (VII G and VII H), selected through cluster random sampling. Research instruments included validation sheets, questionnaires, and observation rubrics. The data analysis techniques employed included the homogeneity test, the normality test, the independent sample t-test, and the correlation test. The findings revealed significant improvements in collaboration and communication skills in the experimental class compared to the control class (p < .05). Pearson correlation analysis further indicated a very strong positive relationship (r = .854; p < .05) between the two skills in the experimental class. These results suggest that integrating the SOLE-TASC is effective in enhancing students’ collaboration and communication skills in science learning compared to conventional instruction.

Abstract

Context-based learning is essential to enhance students’ creativity and environmental awareness. Project-Based Learning (PjBL) based on Ethno-STEM is an approach that integrates local wisdom with science and technology. This study aimed to analyze differences in product creativity and environmental awareness between Ethno-STEM-based PjBL and Discovery Learning. A quasi-experimental design was employed with experimental and control groups in science learning. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics through an Independent Samples t-test. Product creativity was measured based on product assessment scores, while environmental awareness was assessed using gain scores (post-test minus pre-test). The results showed that the experimental group’s product creativity (M = 51.80; SD = 3.71) was higher than that of the control group (M = 41.57; SD = 2.20), with a significant difference (t = 7.49; p 0.05). Environmental awareness increased in both groups; however, no significant difference was found (t = –0.588; p 0.05). Therefore, Ethno-STEM-based PjBL is effective in improving students’ product creativity, but enhancing environmental awareness requires more sustained and continuous interventions.

Abstract

Creative thinking skills are important in 21st-century science education, but the availability of contextual and empirically tested assessment instruments is still limited, especially for material on substances and their changes. This study aims to develop an instrument for creative thinking skills in the form of essay questions integrated with local culture in Semarang. The instrument was developed based on four indicators of creative thinking, namely fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration, and consisted of seven contextual questions. Content validity was assessed by five experts using Aiken's V index, which produced an average Aiken’s V value of .92, indicating a very high level of item suitability. The instrument was then tested on 175 junior high school students and analyzed using the Rasch Model. The analysis results showed item reliability of .98, indicating extreme stability in the items' difficulty hierarchy. All items were declared fit for the model with outfit and infit mean square values within the accepted criteria range. The response category structure analysis showed a monotonically increasing observed average pattern and sequentially ordered category thresholds, although some threshold differences were outside the ideal range. Overall, the developed instrument has good measurement quality and is suitable for assessing creative thinking skills in science within the local culture.
