Abstract

Meatballs are one of the favorite processed foods. They are round and made from livestock meat with starch or cereals. The texture and chewiness of meatballs should be determined by the meat used as the main ingredient in the production process. Still, borax is usually added to reduce production costs, which, if consumed continuously, can interfere with health. Therefore, this study aims to identify the presence of borax in meatballs in Sekaran Village, Semarang City, with the natural indicator of hibiscus flowers. Hibiscus flowers were chosen because they contain anthocyanin extract that can be used as a qualitative indicator of the presence of borax compounds in a food sample. The test results showed that all five meatball samples were positive, as evidenced by the formation of a purple ring with a white base on the indicator paper. This indicates that the public still needs to be vigilant when consuming food, and related agencies still need to intervene to conduct periodic checks and withdraw various food products, especially those containing borax compounds.

Abstract

Collaboration and communication are essential 21st-century skills. Observations and interviews suggest that these are among students in science learning are still not fully developed. This study aims to analyze the differences in collaboration and communication skills between the experimental and control classes and examine the relationship between these two skills through implementation of the Self-Organized Learning Environment (SOLE) model, integrating thinking actively in a social context (TASC). The research employed a quantitative method with a quasi-experimental design. The study groups being a pretest–posttest control group involving two seventh-grade classes (VII G and VII H), selected through cluster random sampling. Research instruments included validation sheets, questionnaires, and observation rubrics. The data analysis techniques employed included the homogeneity test, the normality test, the independent sample t-test, and the correlation test. The findings revealed significant improvements in collaboration and communication skills in the experimental class compared to the control class (p < .05). Pearson correlation analysis further indicated a very strong positive relationship (r = .854; p < .05) between the two skills in the experimental class. These results suggest that integrating the SOLE-TASC is effective in enhancing students’ collaboration and communication skills in science learning compared to conventional instruction.

Abstract

Abstract

Context-based learning is essential to enhance students’ creativity and environmental awareness. Project-Based Learning (PjBL) based on Ethno-STEM is an approach that integrates local wisdom with science and technology. This study aimed to analyze differences in product creativity and environmental awareness between Ethno-STEM-based PjBL and Discovery Learning. A quasi-experimental design was employed with experimental and control groups in science learning. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics through an Independent Samples t-test. Product creativity was measured based on product assessment scores, while environmental awareness was assessed using gain scores (post-test minus pre-test). The results showed that the experimental group’s product creativity (M = 51.80; SD = 3.71) was higher than that of the control group (M = 41.57; SD = 2.20), with a significant difference (t = 7.49; p 0.05). Environmental awareness increased in both groups; however, no significant difference was found (t = –0.588; p 0.05). Therefore, Ethno-STEM-based PjBL is effective in improving students’ product creativity, but enhancing environmental awareness requires more sustained and continuous interventions.

Abstract

Science learning anxiety can hinder pre-service teachers' engagement with scientific concepts and negatively affect their future teaching practices. However, instruments specifically designed to measure this construct in science education contexts remain limited. This study developed and validated the Brief Science Learning Anxiety Scale (BSLAS) to measure science learning anxiety among pre-service science teachers, based on Hooda and Saini's theory of academic anxiety. The development process involved five stages: scale design, item development, item selection, validation, and evaluation. Content validity was evaluated using Aiken's V, which indicated strong agreement among experts (V = .91). Exploratory factor analysis with 320 respondents identified five dimensions: worry, procrastination, study skills deficits, emotionality, and task-generated interference, explaining 49.04% of the variance. Confirmatory factor analysis on an independent sample of 324 respondents supported the factorial structure and demonstrated an acceptable model fit. The scale also demonstrated adequate convergent and discriminant validity and high internal reliability (ω = .847-.917). These findings indicate that the BSLAS has sound psychometric properties and can serve as a practical instrument for identifying science learning anxiety among pre-service teachers. The instrument may also support further research in science education and help inform teaching strategies that foster more adaptive science learning environments.
