Abstract

The rapid development of digital technology has brought substantial changes in the production, distribution, and validation of Islamic knowledge, triggering fundamental epistemological challenges regarding the authority and legitimacy of religious discourse in the social media era. This study critically analyzes how digitalization transforms traditional religious authority and reconstructs the epistemology of contemporary Islamic thought, focusing on shifting patterns of production, validation, and distribution of religious knowledge. Using a qualitative approach that integrates literature studies and Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), this study analyzes academic literature and digital content to uncover the ideological dimensions and power relations behind epistemological shifts in online Islamic discourse. The results show that digitalization shifts knowledge production from an institutional-hierarchical framework to a more flexible, participatory, and algorithm-driven space, where validation now relies more on popularity metrics than scientific accuracy. This shift gives rise to epistemic populism that replaces scientific authority with performative influence, implicating a decline in methodological depth and the polarization of Islamic identity. This study concludes that digitalization acts as an agent of epistemological transformation that demands the development of a hybrid Islamic epistemology, which combines classical scientific values with digital participatory methods to maintain scientific integrity.

Abstract

This research is based on the existence of the Living Qur’an phenomenon in Lontar village, Tirtayasa district, Serang Banten district, which is the Purnama Water Tradition. This tradition is one of the religious rituals carried out by the Lontar community, which is subsequently performed by the local community as a ritual aimed at calming the heart. (Padang ati). In this tradition, the signs of the Qur'an are used as a medium of healing and water as its medium. The study aims to analyze the processes and practices of the water traditions and the perception of the community towards the water tradition. The method used in writing this research is entographic research with the theory of al-Qur’an reception developed by Ahmad Rafiq. Data collection involves in-depth interviews with key figures, observations, and document studies. The results of this study show that the water that has been prayed is believed to cure a variety of disorders or diseases, both medical and non-medical, commonly referred to as ruqyah. According to some sources, the full moon is also believed to have its privilege. So from that, this tradition is done on Friday night, on the 15th of the month of hijrah, and exactly when the full moon rises.

Abstract

This research examines the perspective of religious moderation in a multicultural society and its impact on social harmony. Religious moderation, which emphasises the values of tolerance, mutual respect and interfaith dialogue, is considered an effective approach in dealing with potential conflicts arising from differences in religious beliefs and practices. Through inclusive education, the involvement of moderate religious leaders, and the support of government policies that favour pluralism, religious moderation can be strengthened and implemented more effectively. Despite challenges such as media influence and narrow religious interpretations, cooperation between various stakeholders was identified as a key factor in overcoming these obstacles. The results of this study show that a religious moderation perspective is not only essential in mitigating conflict, but also in building a peaceful and tolerant society amidst cultural and religious diversity.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the relevance of Jamaluddin al-Afghani’s rationalist and Pan-Islamist thought in addressing the challenges of Islamic reform in the modern Muslim world. The background of the research is rooted in the need for Muslims to overcome intellectual stagnation, colonial subjugation, and geopolitical fragmentation through a rational and inclusive paradigm. This research employs a qualitative approach using library research methods, with descriptive-interpretative analysis of al-Afghani’s works and related secondary literature. The findings reveal that al-Afghani placed rationality at the core of theological and socio-political reform, rejecting blind imitation (taqlid) and fatalism, while emphasizing ijtihad and education. His Pan-Islamist ideas served as a strategic foundation for the global revival of the Muslim ummah, transcending ethnic and national boundaries. His thought inspired later reformers such as Muhammad Abduh and Rashid Rida in shaping a modern, critical, and progressive Islam. Al-Afghani’s intellectual legacy remains highly relevant in confronting contemporary issues such as extremism, authoritarianism, and identity crises within the Muslim world.

Abstract

This article explores the evolution of Islamic thought within the framework of modernity, highlighting the signs of renewal initiated by Muslim thinkers and figures, as well as the challenges encountered during this journey. By employing a qualitative method and reviewing relevant literature, this research determined that integrating Islamic perspectives with a contextual approach could enhance Islamic education's role in fostering a better human civilization in today's world. Islamic thought has transitioned from a standard doctrinal framework to a conversational contextual framework that is better suited to the challenges of contemporary times. This renewal encompasses education, legal politics, Sufism, and technology, while encountering difficulties in striking a balance between tradition and modernity. In the views of Islamic scholars, Islamic education should prioritize a comprehensive approach that addresses not just intellectual dimensions but also spiritual, moral, and social elements.

Abstract

A kiai (Islamic scholars) is an instrumental figure for Muslims, especially their students. Kiai are expected to behave well according to Islamic law. However, many kiai fall into sin. Lack of vigilance in maintaining their faith can lead them to indulge in worldly pleasures and commit reprehensible acts. Therefore, this study focuses on the kiai's identity as a symbol inherent in Islam. The various behaviors carried out during the kiai's da'wah journey will influence the formation of an Islamic religious identity, encompassing its teachings. Therefore, this research was conducted with the aim of presenting the concept of the Immanence of Kiai Ta'lim, the forming and destroying factors, and the influence of the immanence of Kiai Ta'lim on the social environment. In this study, the researcher used a qualitative research method (Field research) to obtain maximum data results. The author used data processing techniques to obtain data in this study by conducting observations at the Syifa'ul Mu'minin Islamic Boarding School, interviews with the leaders of the Kiai of the Syifa'ul Mu'minin Islamic Boarding School, and documentation. The results of this study indicate that the Immanence of Kiai Ta'lim has a very large influence on individuals and the social environment. The Immanence of Kiai Ta'lim is spiritual wisdom by realizing the presence of God (Allah) who is one with one's soul or heart, both in educational missions and in social missions.

Abstract

This study examines the phenomenon of Living Qur’an in the Nyulur Pupulur Takziah tradition in Kampung Lembur Jero, Pabuaran District, Serang Regency. The study aims to describe the implementation of the tradition, identify Qur’anic values, and analyze community perceptions. The method used is descriptive qualitative research through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The results show that this tradition is carried out through a rotating system in providing food for tahlilan activities from the first night until the seventh night. This practice reflects social solidarity and the collective awareness of the community. The Living Qur’an values contained in this tradition include ta‘āwun (mutual assistance), infaq (charitable giving), sincerity, and empathy, which are internalized in daily life. Community perceptions of this tradition tend to be positive because it is viewed as an integration of Islamic teachings and local culture. Thus, Nyulur Pupulur Takziah is a tangible manifestation of the Living Qur’an in the social practices of the community.

Abstract

The phenomenon of the crisis of meaning and spiritual emptiness in modern society reflects a gap between the advancement of modern psychology, which tends to be secular, and the profound spiritual needs of human beings. While modern psychology emphasizes empirical and behavioral aspects, Islamic Sufism through the concepts of tazkiyatun nafs (purification of the soul) and ma‘rifatullah (knowledge of God) offers a transcendental path toward genuine meaning in life. This study aims to analyze the concept of meaning in life according to Al-Ghazali and Viktor Frankl, and to synthesize both perspectives in order to develop an integrative psycho-spiritual model addressing the modern human meaning crisis. Using a qualitative library research method and a hermeneutic-comparative approach, this study integrates classical Sufi texts with modern logotherapy theory. The findings reveal that Al-Ghazali views the meaning of life as theocentric and rooted in divine revelation, whereas Frankl’s perspective is existential and based on human experience. The integration of both produces a psycho-spiritual model that harmonizes psychological and spiritual dimensions, offering relevance for the development of Islamic-based psychotherapy and the rediscovery of meaning in contemporary human life.

Abstract

This study aims to analyse the phenomena of polarisation and truth claims in comments on religious content on TikTok, and to formulate a conflict resolution model based on Qur’anic values. Employing a descriptive-analytical qualitative approach that integrates thematic analysis and thematic social interpretation, user comments were analysed through the stages of open coding, axial coding, and selective coding. The results indicate that religious polarisation in the digital space can be classified into five main themes: tabayyun (verification of information), constructive dialogue, ishlāḥ (reconciliation), justice, and unity. The conflicts that arise are generally triggered by misinformation, confrontational communication, group bias, and identity polarisation. This study produced a Qur’anic-based conceptual model of conflict resolution that identifies the construction of religious meaning and the regulation of responses as formative factors, and dialogical awareness, social reconciliation, and community integration as its primary manifestations. These findings confirm that religious conflict on social media is not merely communicative in nature, but also epistemic and ethical, thus requiring a normative approach grounded in Qur’anic values for its management.
