Abstract

Abstract

Vibrio vulnificus is a crucial foodborne opportunistic pathogen that can cause wound infections, septicemia, and gastroenteritis with a 50% fatality rate. This bacteria occurs in estuaries and coastal waters and is found in large quantities in oysters and other mollusc shells. The increasing number of foodborne diseases worldwide is suspected to have occurred due to the expansion of the international food trade. Consumption of raw seafood, especially oysters containing Vibrio vulnificus bacteria, can result in acute, severe systemic infections and is responsible for 95% of deaths from seafood consumption in the United States. The diagnosis of Vibrio vulnificus infection is confirmed by the growth of the bacteria in culture media from wounds, feces or blood. This article discusses the characteristics of the bacteria, host, environment, transmission, pathogenesis, clinical symptoms, diagnostic techniques and geographical distribution of V. vulnificus.

Abstract

Snot is a symptom of upper respiratory system infections in poultry, characterized by exudate production from the nasal cavity, swelling of infraorbital sinuses, snoring, sneezing, and dyspnoea. The aetiology of snot that have been isolated are Avibaterium paragallinarum, Pasteurella multocida, Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale, and Mycoplasma sp. Snot symptom can be eradicated with antibiotic treatment; however, antibiotic resistance makes antibiotic treatment ineffective. This study is aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of some commercial antibiotics against bacteria isolated from broiler chicken with snot symptom in Kupang Regency. Amoxycillin, ampicillin, tetracycline, cefoxitin, and ciprofloxacin were tested using the Kirby Bauer method with McFarland Turbidity Standard against Avibacterium paragallinarum, Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale, Pasteurella multocida, and Mycoplasma sp isolates. Inhibition zones were measured and compared to the standard of the Clinical Laboratory Standard Institute (CLSI) to determine the sensitivity or resistance percentage. The result showed that Avibacterium paragallinarum, Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale, Pasteurella multocida, and Mycoplasma sp were highly resistant to amoxycillin and ampicillin, yet most sensitif to ciprofloxacin. This suggests commercial antibiotics that are productive to eradicate snot symptom and implies some antibiotics that are ineffective to overcome snot symptom and hence should not be used in the field.

Abstract

This research was conducted to observe the effects of chalk derived from the combustion of Terebralia palustris snail shells on the inhibition of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria, its ability to reduce ammonia levels and to decrease moisture content in broiler chicken faeces and litter. The experimental design used in this study was group randomized design (GRD), with a total sample of 100 broiler chickens. The treatment groups were divided into 5 groups with different chalk concentrations: P0 (0%), P1 (2.5%), P2 (5%), P3 (7.5%), and P4 (10%). The results indicated that the different chalk concentrations significantly reduced ammonia levels in the coop (P<0.05), significantly decreased litter and faeces moisture content (P<0.05), and significantly increased litter and faeces pH (P<0.05), however, the chalk did not have antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus with an average inhibition zone of <10 mm except for Staphylococcus aureus at 10% chalk concentration (P4), which showed weak antibacterial activity with an average inhibition zone of 10.66 mm. The study concluded that the use of chalk derived from Terebralia palustris snails in broiler chicken maintenance positively impacts the reduction of ammonia levels, the decrease in litter and faeces moisture content, and the increase in litter and faeces pH, but does not demonstrate significant antibacterial activity.

Abstract

Salmonella sp. is one of the dangerous pathogens that causes salmonellosis in humans and animals. Salmonella sp. bacteria. usually inhabit the intestines of most animal species, but are also found in the environment. Salmonella sp. can survive for long periods of time, allowing bacteria to move from one place to another through equipment, including contaminated feed. This case report aims to determine the technique and interpretation of the results of each laboratory test in identifying Salmonella sp. Which is obtained through swabbing the chicken's cloaca. The testing stages include sampling, laboratory testing, and identification of test results. Sampling was carried out at the Naikoten I Inpres Market, Kupang City and laboratory testing was carried out at the Bacteriology Laboratory of the Veterinary Medicine Study Program, Nusa Cendana University. The isolation results found Salmonella sp. SSA media is black, because Salmonella produces hydrogen sulfide (H2S). The results of gram staining showed that the bacteria were in the form of cocobacillus and were gram negative. Biochemical testing of Salmonella sp. is negative in the Indol test, produces H2S, is non-motile, and catalase positive.

Abstract

The uncontrolled population of dogs and cats in urban areas poses a significant risk for the transmission of zoonotic diseases, including rabies. As a rabies-endemic region in Indonesia, Kupang City requires effective strategies to reduce the population of rabies vector animals, one of which is through sterilization programs. This community service initiative aimed to support population control of dogs and cats as a preventive measure against the transmission of rabies. Sterilization procedures were carried out at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of the University of Nusa Cendana during October 2024, involving 25 owned animals (both male and female dogs and cats) from various areas in Kupang, including Penfui, Oesapa, Liliba, and Naikolan. The surgeries were performed by a veterinary medical team using standard surgical techniques, with a focus on animal welfare. The activity received a positive response from the community and demonstrated that sterilization is an effective and socially acceptable method for controlling the domestic animal population. Similar programs can be implemented regularly and sustainably to support rabies elimination efforts in Kupang City.
