Abstract

This research explores the transformative impact of social media on political campaigns, particularly in the context of Malaysia’s 15th General Election (GE15). Social media platforms as a political campaigning tool highlight its influence on young voters and their perceptions of political figures. In addition, social media has revolutionized the dynamics of political engagement, it has also introduced challenges such as the spread of misinformation, hate speech, and unequal access among political parties. This research applied a qualitative method by comparing various literatures. Leveraging The Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), this study aims to analyze how social media influences election outcomes and shape public opinion. The findings reveal that social media played a significant role in GE15, with candidates strategically utilizing platforms like Facebook and TikTok to engage voters, especially the youth demographic. Ultimately, social media not only serves as a battleground for public discourse but also shapes the political landscape by reaching out to digital natives and first-time voters who rely on social media for news and information. This research contributes to the understanding of digital campaign dynamics by demonstrating how the perceived ease of use and usefulness of social media influence political campaigning. It underscores the critical role of technological acceptance in the adoption of new media strategies by political actors. By applying TAM, this study provides valuable insights into the power of social media in modern political campaigns, offering practical recommendations for political strategists and parties aiming to enhance their digital engagement and campaign effectiveness in future elections.

Abstract

Aim: This study aims to analyse how the calibre of the candidates running for regional heads affects voter turnout in local elections.Method: Interviews and careful observation were used as part of this study’s qualitative methodology. Primary and secondary sources were used to compile the data. Because of its interpretive and semantic compatibility with the proposed research problems, this research strategy has been chosen and is considered appropriate.Findings: The democratic process in Indonesia relies heavily on voter turnout. Voter turnout is a good indicator of how politically engaged a community is, so when it rises, so does the quality of our democratic system. Several factors, including the calibre of the candidates running for the regional head, can influence voter turnout.Implications/Novel Contribution: Multiple studies and surveys have failed to uncover any literature on the effect of candidate quality on voter turnout, and this lack of knowledge extends to Indonesia. The research community, therefore, agrees that this essay contributes something new to the scientific discourse.

Abstract

This research investigates the role of youth in shaping political dynamics in Guinea-Bissau, focusing on political patronage and youth engagement. Despite facing significant socio-economic challenges, such as high unemployment and limited access to quality education, young people in Guinea-Bissau actively engage in non-violent activities like sporting events, cultural days in schools, and community clean-ups, often supported by political parties. These activities reflect a shift towards constructive political participation, contrasting with the more violent demonstrations seen in neighboring countries. The study employs qualitative methods, including semi-structured interviews and content analysis, to gather and analyze data from Bissau-Guinean youth engaged in politics. The theoretical framework combines political patronage theory, youth political involvement, and democratic engagement to analyze how youth influence political dynamics. Findings reveal that patronage systems play a significant role in mediating youth political involvement, often reinforcing existing power structures and limiting genuine political participation. To enhance youth political involvement, the research underscores the need for investment in education, raising political awareness, and ensuring transparency to reduce corruption and promote informed debates. Drawing on qualitative data from interviews and thematic analysis, the study provides a nuanced understanding of the unique historical, socio-economic, and cultural contexts influencing youth political engagement in Guinea-Bissau. The findings offer valuable insights for policymakers, practitioners, and scholars, emphasizing the importance of inclusive and effective political processes to foster democratic governance and political stability in the region. This research aims to fill the gap in existing literature by providing a focused analysis of youth political engagement in Guinea-Bissau, contributing to the broader discourse on youth political participation in West Africa.

Abstract

The relationship between Vietnam and Indonesia, formally established in 1955, has evolved over seventy years from shared anti-colonial roots into a robust partnership. This journey culminated in the elevation of their ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP) in March 2025, marking a historic milestone. This article examines the historical trajectory of this relationship, analysing its development through various phases, from early ideological alignment and Cold War complexities to structured cooperation within ASEAN and the Strategic Partnership era (2013-2024). It then delves into the key dimensions of the new CSP, focusing on enhanced cooperation in trade, investment, defence, maritime security, and emerging sectors like the digital and green economies. The article argues that the CSP holds significant untapped potential to deepen bilateral ties, contribute to ASEAN's centrality, and enable both nations to collectively navigate the geopolitical dynamics of the Indo-Pacific. By analysing key milestones, including the crucial 2022 EEZ demarcation, and exploring future opportunities and challenges, the article underscores the strategic importance of this partnership for achieving shared long-term development goals and fostering regional stability.

Abstract

Abstract This study intends to analyze the dynamics of the selection process of members of the Provincial and Regency / City General Election Commission (KPU) in Central Java in 2013-2018 with the phenomenon of the existence of KPU members from the background of Community Organizations (Ormas). The existence of CSOs competes with each other to place their cadres as part of the Election organizers in Central Java. The KPU member candidates place the Ormas like a network that provides provisions for the contestants in undergoing selection, with mastery of both cultural, social and economic capital. The problem arises is how the intended CSOs compete in placing their cadres in the selection arena until they succeed in sitting as KPU with the experience of the CSOs. By using a qualitative approach method, which is analyzed based on the Bourdieu concept where the ability to compete in an arena is inseparable from the formation of habitus and mastery of capital. As for the findings in the field, cadres who have CSO backgrounds that control capital and habitus will indirectly have a high chance of becoming members of the KPU. At the end of the study by looking at the dynamics and complexity of the elections, in the future the involvement of CSOs is still very much needed. This is necessary considering that KPU institutions have social characteristics inherent in the community. The character is expected to be careless when providing and giving recommendations to cadres to enter and become KPU at the local level.

Abstract

China was the first country that affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, China showed aggressive behavior during that period toward the South China Sea. Meanwhile, countries in the region concentrated on handling the COVID-19 pandemic. This study explains China's strategies and tactics in exploiting the COVID-19 pandemic phenomenon to achieve its interests in the South China Sea. This study used a literature study method to explain this phenomenon. The selected literature is secondary data scattered in previous research and credible news related to the political dynamics in the South China Sea. The research finds that China combines soft power, such as medical supply assistance and vaccine diplomacy, with hard power to increase its influence at the regional and global levels, including in the South China Sea region. In addition to disputes, these tactics can increase regional tensions and threaten the peace and stability of the South China Sea. In addition, this phenomenon also shows a decline in the trust of the disputing countries in the recognition of each other's sovereignty and the international regime.

Abstract

This study examines the role of the Tangerang LIVE application in promoting democratization and public policy through digital innovation. The approach used is exploratory qualitative, with literature studies, document analysis, and non-participatory observation of citizen interactions—including user reviews, agency responses, and bold media—from May 2024 to March 2025. Data were analyzed using thematic techniques assisted by NVivo, with validation through source triangulation. The focus of the study encompasses (1) citizen accessibility and participation (e-participation), (2) government transparency and accountability, and (3) digital democracy practices, including evidence-based policy deliberations. The results show that the LAKSA feature in Tangerang LIVE provides a space for citizens to convey their aspirations and complaints, most of which are responded to quickly and transparently by the government. This reflects the application of e-governance principles. However, technical constraints, such as application bugs and login difficulties, remain obstacles. Within the UTAUT theoretical framework, digital citizen participation is greatly influenced by perceptions of the ease and benefits of technology. Complaint data also has the potential to be analyzed with artificial intelligence (AI) to strengthen evidence-based policy research. The study concludes that Tangerang LIVE is a real-life example of digital innovation that promotes inclusive, participatory, and responsive governance. AI integration and technical system enhancements are needed to strengthen digital democracy at the local level.

Abstract

In the 2024 legislative campaign, Sigit Raditya competed as a legislative candidate in one of the highly competitive electoral districts, the West Java VI Electoral District. Sigit Raditya lost in competing in the electoral district. This study uses a qualitative design with primary data through interviews with Sigit Raditya and the campaign team in Bekasi and Depok. The analysis was carried out using Nursal's political marketing framework which divides the focus of political marketing into three strategies, namely push, pull, and pass marketing. This study shows findings that in the political marketing that has been implemented by the Sigit Raditya campaign team, all three approaches have been contextually applied in the campaign in Bekasi and Depok. As a newcomer, formation and strengthening through an emotional approach with face-to-face practices are carried out in the push marketing strategy. However, this strategy is not optimal due to inadequate volunteer capacity and Sigit Raditya's absence from several face-to-face visit schedules which reduce his exposure to the grassroots. Then exposure to attract voters through visual media in a combination of digital (social media) and conventional (billboards, brochures) has also been implemented, but there are some inconsistencies in the visuals and aesthetics offered on social media and the distribution of props is uneven. While marketing using the pass marketing approach has attracted several public figures to strengthen support at the grassroots level, this strategy can still require encouragement from the involvement of public figures or influencers who work actively to market Sigit Raditya so that the reach of messages and exposure can increase and expand.
