Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Indonesian vocational higher education struggles to equip students with green energy competencies needed for the renewable energy transition. However, evidence on effective project-based models across diverse regional contexts remains scarce. This multisite quasi-experimental study evaluated a Technological-Pedagogical-Content-Knowledge-informed, culturally responsive Project-Based Learning model across three Indonesian cities (Batam, Yogyakarta, Makassar). We assigned 186 engineering students to either 14 weeks of project-based intervention or to conventional instruction, and measured practical competency, conceptual understanding, and digital technology integration. The intervention produced large, consistent effects across all outcomes (Cohen's d = 1.63-1.98), with no significant site-by-condition interaction. Qualitative thematic analysis of 279 reflective journals and six instructor interviews identified contextual relevance, collaborative troubleshooting, teacher technology brokering, and civic orientation as explanatory mechanisms. Despite effect sizes substantially exceeding typical educational technology interventions in low- and middle-income countries, partial assessor blinding and intact class assignment preclude fully causal attribution. The study contributes multisite evidence from a Global South setting, operationalizes TPACK and culturally responsive pedagogy as a combined design logic anchored in Indonesia's tri-pusat tradition, and offers a scalable model linking SDG 4 and SDG 7. Future research requires randomized controlled trials, longitudinal follow-up, cost-effectiveness analysis, and replication in eastern Indonesian provinces.

Abstract

This study examines the four-decade partnership between Darunnajah Islamic Boarding School (pesantren), Jakarta, and Al-Azhar University, Cairo, through the mabʻūts (delegated-teacher) program from 1986 to 2026, a partnership rarely studied from a management perspective. The objective is to explain the governance structure that sustains the partnership and the mechanisms through which its benefits reach the institution, students, and community. The core problem is why some international partnerships of Islamic institutions endure for decades while others end. Using a single-case study design with document analysis of two memoranda of understanding, foundation archives, and official publications, the study reconstructs twelve assignment periods and analyses the partnership’s governance. The findings show that sustainability rests on three interlocking mechanisms consolidated here as the Institutionalization Contractual Residential Model (IKR Model) namely the institutionalization of the relationship beyond individual figures, a relational contract that clearly allocates responsibilities and dispute-resolution channels, and a three-year residential rotation model that transfers tacit linguistic and ethical knowledge to students. The study offers practical propositions for Islamic institutions seeking to replicate this governance pattern and extends the internationalization and institutional-governance literature to the under-represented pesantren context.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the model of leadership based on Islamic values in responding to the organizational challenges of 21st-century education at Ma'had Tahfidz Tafaqquh, Kampar, Riau. Using a qualitative case study approach, the research collected data through semi-structured interviews, participatory observation, and documentation. The participants included leaders, educators, and senior students involved in decision-making and policy implementation at the institution. The data analysis revealed three main themes: (1) transformative leadership based on Islamic values focusing on character development and 21st-century skills, (2) managing changes and educational challenges by integrating technology while maintaining Islamic principles, and (3) the role of the community in creating an adaptive learning environment. These findings contribute to the understanding of how Islamic values-based leadership can be adapted to address modern educational challenges and provide practical guidance for other Islamic educational institutions. In conclusion, this study has significant implications for the development of Islamic education leadership theory and offers insights for designing policies that support the integration of Islamic values with educational technology.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the dynamics of leadership and governance in Islamic education institutions, with a particular focus on how strategic planning is implemented and the challenges encountered in sustaining value-based education. A qualitative research design was employed, utilizing a multiple-case study approach across four Islamic education institutions in Indonesia, including two pesantren and two Islamic universities. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 28 institutional leaders, document analysis of strategic plans and governance frameworks, and non-participant observation of institutional practices. Thematic analysis following Braun and Clarke’s six-phase protocol was used to analyze the data. The findings reveal three main themes: (1) the centrality of spiritual leadership in shaping governance structures that align with Islamic values; (2) the tensions between modernization demands and the preservation of traditional educational values; and (3) the role of participatory governance mechanisms in mediating stakeholder interests during strategic planning processes. The study concludes that effective leadership in Islamic education institutions requires an integrative approach that harmonizes Islamic ethical principles with contemporary management practices. This research contributes to the understanding of how value-based governance frameworks can be operationalized within Islamic educational contexts, offering practical implications for institutional leaders and policymakers.

Abstract

The integration of digital leadership in the higher education ecosystem is a fundamental prerequisite for strengthening data-driven instructional decision-making. This study aims to explore the optimization of the role of digital leadership in integrating artificial intelligence (AI) and data-driven strategies to improve pedagogical effectiveness and learning outcomes. This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, participatory observation, and documentation analysis of academic leaders, educators, and educational technology specialists as key informants. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis techniques through a process of data reduction, categorization, and iterative conclusion drawing. The results show that effective digital leadership requires leaders to act as mediators between the technological and pedagogical dimensions, going beyond mere technical mastery. The success of integration depends on a systematic, step-by-step approach and the continuous strengthening of educators' digital competencies, despite the challenges of the digital divide and institutional resistance. This study concludes that digital transformation requires a holistic approach that includes strengthening infrastructure, continuous professional development, and equitable accessibility strategies.

Abstract

Abstract

Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) have historically served as the cornerstone of religious education in Indonesia, yet their capacity to enhance educational quality amid globalization and technological advancement remains insufficiently examined. This study investigates the role of pesantren in improving the quality of religious education through the lens of Islamic education transformation. Employing a qualitative approach with a multiple case study design, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 24 informants, participatory observation, and document analysis across six pesantren in Java and Sumatra representing traditional (salafiyah), modern (khalafiyah), and integrated typologies. The findings reveal three principal dimensions of transformation: first, curriculum integration that harmonizes classical Islamic texts (kitab kuning) with contemporary scientific and vocational competencies; second, pedagogical modernization through the adoption of student-centered learning methods and digital technology while preserving the core values of character formation (tarbiyah); and third, institutional governance reform characterized by strategic leadership of kiai, quality assurance mechanisms, and community-based partnerships. The study concludes that pesantren that successfully balance the preservation of traditional religious identity with adaptive innovation (al-muhafazhah 'ala al-qadim al-shalih wa al-akhdzu bi al-jadid al-ashlah) demonstrate significantly enhanced educational outcomes. These findings contribute to the theoretical discourse on Islamic education management by proposing a triadic transformation model and offer practical implications for policymakers and pesantren administrators seeking to strengthen religious education quality in Indonesia.
