Abstract

Bilingual children often encounter greater challenges in school than their monolingual peers, particularly when dealing with abstract concepts and religious education. Teaching the fundamentals of Islam in English is difficult due to the limited availability of locally relevant resources. To address this gap, “My First Handbook of Islam” was developed through four stages involving Islamic scholars, linguists, educators, and illustrators. The book was distributed to schools and Islamic centres, with 1,100 copies disseminated nationally and internationally. This study assessed bilingual children’s attitudes toward the book using a descriptive, quantitative, cross-sectional survey. A total of 104 bilingual children aged 10 to 12 participated, recruited through convenience sampling with parental consent. The instrument consisted of structured questionnaire items (5-point Likert scale), covering vocabulary, comprehension, engagement, sharing, and motivation. The tool achieved good internal reliability (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.82). Data were collected through paper-based surveys, supervised in classrooms after guided reading sessions, and analysed using SPSS v27. Descriptive statistics (frequency, percentage, mean) were applied, with interpretation guided by mean scales. Findings showed that students unanimously valued the book, reporting improved vocabulary acquisition, enthusiasm for Islamic knowledge, and enjoyment of illustrations. The pictorial approach bridged language gaps, reduced cognitive load, and increased engagement through culturally relevant visuals. The book was also used for sharing knowledge with siblings, peers, and teachers, though less so with parents due to language mismatches. The study concludes that pictorial Islamic texts are effective for bilingual learning and can be further enhanced through integration into digital formats such as interactive e-books and mobile apps. Implications are drawn for teachers, parents, curriculum designers, and Islamic educational institutions, especially in multicultural settings.

Abstract

The rapid development of information and computer technology has become a necessity for many users. This increases the risk of information security issues such as hacking, data theft, and malware attacks, which can threaten operational continuity and information privacy. Al-Manar Islamic Vocational School has a major in Information Technology, one of which is Network Security. The introduction to cybersecurity is aimed at 12th grade students majoring in TKJ because the school needs to provide additional education and socialization for students in the use of technology in order to improve their literacy in the use of internet data and cybersecurity risks. It is important to equip students with this knowledge because cybersecurity is a priority of the TKJ Program so that students can increase their awareness of latent risks and adopt appropriate preventive measures against cyber attacks. The activity began with the submission of a proposal, a review of the location, and the implementation of the activity through presentations, discussions, and evaluations. This activity involved 17 participants and lasted for 1.5 hours. The students enthusiastically participated in the theoretical introduction through active participation, lectures, and discussions, with a theoretical introduction to the basic material of computer networks and basic internet network security. From the feedback provided by filling out the Google form link related to the discussion of the material, it can be seen that the material was presented well and could be understood as a whole. In the question and answer session, nearly 89% of the participants responded that the presenter provided clear explanations during the activity and received positive.

Abstract

Enhancing digital literacy has become a national priority in Indonesia; however, university students still demonstrate limited critical competencies in analyzing, comparing, and evaluating digital information. This study aims to examine how a blended learning model fosters critical digital media literacy within communication education. This research employed a qualitative approach using a best practice case study design focusing on high-achieving students. Data were collected through classroom observations, reflective assignments, and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) involving 29 participants, and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings indicate that blended learning facilitates students’ analytical reasoning, cross-platform comparative assessment, and systematic information evaluation. Students demonstrated strong abilities in verifying information credibility, identifying media bias, and reflecting on their own critical thinking processes. This study concludes that blended learning functions as an effective pedagogical space for cultivating higher-order critical digital media literacy competencies in communication students.

Abstract

The development of digital media presents challenges in delivering complex economic information to the wider community. This understanding gap encourages the emergence of communication strategies that use simple language and everyday narratives. This study aims to examine how narrative strategies are used in simplifying economic issues on YouTube content, considering that previous narrative studies focused more on films and fictional works. This study uses a descriptive qualitative design with a narrative analysis approach to the video Understanding Danantara with Ease by Malaka Project. The analysis was carried out using the framework of Tzvetan Todorov's narrative structure and the character function of Vladimir Propp. The results of the study show that the narrative is arranged through a classic fairy tale plot with an open ending that serves as a simulation of economic policy risks. In addition, the use of family metaphors and dual character construction allows for the simplification of issues without removing critical content. This study concludes that social media narratives can function as a bridge of public economic literacy that encourages understanding as well as audiences' reflective attitudes towards policy risks.

Abstract

In eradicating corruption, KPK is required to be the central institution that plays a crucial role in overcoming corrupt practices at various levels of society. Ironically, this corruption phenomenon has involved KPK members, even the highest leadership of the 2019-2023 KPK chairman named Firli Bahuri, who was decided as a corruption suspect on November 22, 2023, and became history in Indonesia. The incident highlighted the complexities and challenges faced by this anti-corruption agency and attracted the attention of many parties, including the media. Kompas.com is the most trusted media platform for Indonesians in 2023 and has quite a lot of news intensity about Firli Bahuri's resistance. Therefore, this research aims to reveal Kompas.com in producing texts, to find Kompas.com in producing discourse based on ideology and media interests, and to find Kompas.com in building perspectives and representations based on the external context of media and politics in Indonesia. The author uses Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) method for this research. The research shows that Kompas.com's dominant discourse attempts to maintain balance by using many direct quotes from official sources and focusing on the legal process. Kompas avoids direct criticism of Firli or other parties involved in the case. By not highlighting the allegations or evidence against Firli in-depth, Kompas is trying to maintain neutrality and not appear to favor one side. However, this could be interpreted as a form of veiled support.

Abstract

This article examines interpersonal communication between baristas with visual impairments and customers in coffee shops. The research used a case study at Café More, Bandung, Indonesia, which Wyata Guna Special School manages. The research sought to reveal how visually impaired baristas interact and communicate with the coffee shop customers, most of whom do not have disabilities. The study focuses on the communication behavior of low-vision baristas in the form of oral, written, and non-verbal communication. Using the qualitative method and case study approach, the researcher conducted in-depth interviews with two baristas with visual impairment as critical informants, five customers and a manager of Café More as primary informants, and two people with visual impairment who are also customers of Café More as supporting informants. The results of the study found that the blind barista of Low Vision Café More Bandung conducted two communications, namely verbal communication and nonverbal communication. Verbal communication between blind baristas and customers at Café More Bandung goes well even though it requires repetition of customer speech to ensure the messages are conveyed correctly because most supporting informants are regular customers. In nonverbal communication in research, namely a gesture or body movement and hand movements such as using fingers to determine the number of orders. With this research, it is hoped that people with disabilities will get the same place in jobs that require interaction and communication with consumers.
