Abstract

Climate change and consumption of sustainable resources are global issues internalized in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In fact, local wisdom has accommodated the concept of sustainable development. However, local wisdom is currently less involved in the SDGs. This research seeks to ensure that local wisdom, including the Mentawai Arat Sabulungan (AS), can support SDGs 12 and 13 in Indonesia. The purpose of this research is to explore the position and role of the AS, to analyze the correlation between the AS and the SDGs mission to address climate change and sustainable resource consumption, and to formulate efforts to implement national SDGs points 12 and 13 through a cultural approach. The research method used is qualitative research by collecting data through interviews, observation, and literature studies. The results of this study are: First, AS is the belief system of the Mentawai people as an ecological awareness that is based on sacred values and functions as a religious principle, social norm, and environmental conservation. Second, the AS concept of sacred ecology has relevance to the SDGs on sustainable consumption and efforts to deal with climate change. Third, the strategy for implementing SDGs points 12 and 13 can be carried out by localizing it.

Abstract

Abstract

Tea (Camellia sinensis L.) has an activity as an antibacterial, widely studied to plankton cells, without further researching into biofilm cell. Therefore, this research had been conducted to initially evaluate the activity of green- and black-tea extracts in inhibiting Streptococcus mutans biofilm. Green and black tea leaves were extracted using 70% methanol. Determination of MIC was subsequently performed by microdilution method. Next, the biofilm formation and inhibition were run through microtiter plate method using flexible U-bottom PVC 96 wells, which then observed using microplate reader on λ = 515 nm. As The results, MIC for green and black tea extract stood at 4 mg/mL, 6 mg/mL respectively. The biofilm inhibitory activity of black tea extract was at 8 and 10 mg/mL inhibiting 6 % and 12.5 % S. mutans. Green tea extract showed that concentration of 4 to 10 mg/mL was able to inhibit biofilm growth by 24%; 45%; 48% and 53%. Thus, through microtiter plate assay, it could be concluded that tea extract has potent antibiofilm to S. mutans, where green tea extract has better activity than black tea extract.

Abstract

Currently, the antibacterial research is increasingly promoted primarily from natural materials, due to the increasing number of pathogenic bacteria that have been resistant to existing antibiotics. One of the pathogenic bacteria that has been much resistant to antibiotics is Staphylococcus aureus. Rosella calyx (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) and chitosan are known to have antibacterial activity. The aim of this study to find out the antibacterial synergy of the roselle calyx extract and chitosan against. S.aureus ATCC 33592. Rosella calyx was extracted by maceration using 80 % ethanol, while chitosan is obtained from deasetilation chitin of shrimp husk. Test antibacterial synergism using checkboard assay method by calculating the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) using microdilution assay. The results showed minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) value of roselle calyx extract and chitosan were 1250 ppm and 50 ppm, respectively. MIC value of rosella calyx extract in the presence of chitosan was 625 ppm, while the value of MIC chitosan in the presence of rosella calyx extract was < 0.19 ppm. Fractional Inhibition Concentration Index (FICI) was < 0.5 which concluded that the combination of roselle calyx extract with chitosan has a synergistic antibacterial effect on S.aureus ATCC 33592.

Abstract

Endophytic fungi are microbes that reside symbiotically in the plant tissues with undetected negative impacts to their host plants. These fungi are able to produce elements similar to those produced by their host plants. Secang (Caesalpinia sappan L.) has been known as one of the medicinal plants that contains compounds with antioxidant activity thus promote a hypothesis that its endophytic fungi may yield a similar antioxidant effect. In this study, the isolation of endophytic fungi from Secang as the producer of antioxidant compounds was carried out. At the initial stage, endophytic fungi were isolated from the leaves, the twigs, the stems, and the rootsof Secang using the agar plate method. Pure fungi isolates were then subjected to fermentation process using the PDBgrowth medium supplemented with yeast extractand wereconstantly shaken for 12 days at a speed of 200 rpm to produce secondary metabolites. Fermentatesobtained from all fungi isolates were then extracted using ethyl acetate and further tested for their antioxidant activities. In this study, of 19 isolates that were obtained from four parts of the Secang, five fungi isolates, coded as IFD1, IFD4, IFR5, IFA1, and IFA2 were found to yield antioxidant activities demonstrated by the presence of yellow spots on the chromatogram. elementary schools representatives “not good ranking”, the education did not influence their knowledge with a p value of 0.149. Analysis of the Wilcoxon test in all elementary schools showed a p value p ≤ 0,001, which meant that education had an influence on the knowledge of fifth grade students in elementary schools in Palu City.

Abstract

First-line drugs (Isoniazid and Rifampicin) for the treatment of tuberculosis are known to have experienced resistance to Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The aim of this study was to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of maltodextrin encapsulated rosella calyx extract and its ability to provide a synergistic effect with Isoniazid (INH) and Rifampicin (RIF) on M. tuberculosis R37rv. Rosella calyxs were macerated using 50% ethanol and encapsulated using maltodextrin. Antibacterial activity was carried out by determining MIC value using Microscopic Observation and Direct Susceptibility (MODS) method. The synergistic effect was carried out by calculating the Fractional Inhibition Concentration Index (FICI). The results showed that this extract was able to inhibit M. tuberculosis H37rv with MIC of 10 mg/ ml. The FICI value of the combination of extract with INH and rifampicin was obtained 1.25. This showed that rosella calyx extract is not synergistic with INH and rifampicin, might be due to rosella calyx extract has an antibacterial effect with a different mechanism with INH and Rifampicin.

Abstract

Street lighting is a crucial element in improving public safety and ensuring smooth community activities during nighttime. In Babakan Jaya Village, Kopo District, Serang Regency, the existing manually operated lighting system led to unnecessary energy consumption and reduced road safety. This community service initiative introduced an automatic street lighting system equipped with a photocell sensor to enhance energy efficiency and strengthen residents’ sense of security. The implementation process involved location surveys, system design, equipment installation, testing, and official commissioning. The installed system successfully operated as intended lights automatically turned on at dusk when natural light levels decreased and switched off at dawn eliminating the need for manual control. Local residents reported noticeable improvements in both comfort and safety for nighttime activities. This program demonstrates that low-cost, simple automation technology can be effectively applied to improve rural infrastructure in an energy-efficient and sustainable manner.
