Abstract

Rabies is a zoonotic disease that can be transmitted from animals to humans. Rabies remains a global threat, killing around 59,000 people each year, and dogs are still the main source of transmission. The presence of dogs in the community as one of the animals most often infected with rabies is a condition that must always be watched out for, one of which is in the group of children who are at highest risk of being bitten by rabid dogs. Communication, Information, and Education (CIE) is one of the strategies used in the comprehensive approach of the rabies eradication program in Indonesia. Increasing knowledge related to rabies in children can be done through CIE that is packaged attractively without reducing the content and information conveyed. CIE with the theme "Rabies; Introduction, Prevention, and Control" was given to 45 students of SDN Medowo 3, Medowo village, Kedungkandang district, Kediri regency using the fun teaching method through material presentation and educative games. Evaluation of the results of the Rabies CIE was carried out by comparing the results of the pretest and posttest that had been filled out by the students. The method of data analysis and interpretation was carried out descriptively quantitatively through the percentage of total correct and incorrect answers to the question variables that represent the content of the CIE material that has been given and the average score of the pretest and posttest results in each class and age group. The results of the evaluation of the question variables showed that there was an increase in students' understanding of rabies material from 85.6% to 92.5% and there was an increase in the average posttest results in all groups after education. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the Rabies CIE activities provided can increase elementary school students' knowledge regarding Rabies.

Abstract

Background: Milk, a nutrient-rich substance obtained from udder secretions, can suffer quality degradation due to factors like disease-causing microorganisms. Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD), an acute viral infection affecting cloven-hoofed animals, can severely impact milk production and quality. Purpose: This study aims to analyze the quality of milk from dairy cattle following the FMD outbreak, as FMD not only reduces milk yield but also alters its composition, affecting consumer preferences and farmer income. Method: Milk quality tests were conducted on cattle following the FMD outbreak with each 50 ml sample stored in an icebox and analyzed using a calibrated Lactoscan tool. The analysis covered fat, solid-non-fat (SNF), density, lactose, salts, protein, temperature, freezing point, added water, total solids, and pH levels. The study received consent from local authorities and breeders. Results: The analysis of cow milk post Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreak reveals significant variability in milk composition, affecting quality and processing, with many falling below or above standard thresholds for fat content, SNFs, protein content, freezing point, and added water, while all samples had a pH level outside the acceptable range. Conclusion:  Quality of dairy milk from dairy cattle after FMD outbreaks show decreasing of fat content in five milk samples, four samples in solid non fat, three samples in protein, nine samples in freezing point, eight samples in added water, and all samples fell outside the acceptable pH range.

Abstract

Abstract

Lumpy Skin Disease is a smallpox disease on the skin caused by the Lumpy Skin Disease virus from the genus Capripox, family Poxviridae. The LSD virus is double a stranded deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA virus), has a lipid envelope, and replicates in the cytoplasm. This disease can infect cattle and buffalo, and give an economic impact on farmers. Information about LSD in Indonesia has not been published for a long time and has not been published enough, so the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Brawijaya University has taken the role of conveying information about LSD through Communication, Information and Education (KIE) media in order to increase awareness of the entry and spread of LSD in areas experiencing LSD outbreaks. The KIE activity was attended by 17 participants from the "Sukses Bersama" Dairy Cattle Group. The results obtained from KIE activities were an increase in participants' knowledge, known from the results of the pretest and posttest analysis. The highest average score before the presentation of the material, the teenage group respondents answered 10 questions correctly, the adult and elderly groups answered 11 questions correctly. Meanwhile, after the presentation of the material, the highest average of respondents in the teenage, adult and elderly groups answered 12 questions correctly. The participant's age influences the participant's ability to answer questions correctly.

Abstract

Background: Nosocomial infections pose a major challenge not only in human hospitals but also in veterinary settings. These infections are frequently associated with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (ESBL-E). Purpose:  This study aimed to detect and characterize MRSA and ESBL-E isolated from environmental samples at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Universitas Brawijaya (VTH UB). Method: The study involved four main procedures: (1) sample isolation; (2) bacterial identification of S. aureus and Enterobacteriaceae using MacConkey agar supplemented with 1 mg/L cefotaxime (MCA + 1 mg/L); (3) antibiotic susceptibility testing and MRSA confirmation using Oxacillin Resistance Screening Agar Base (ORSAB); and (4) confirmation of ESBL production through the Double Disk Synergy Test (DDST). Results: Isolation and identification revealed S. aureus in 86.6% (13/15) of samples and Enterobacteriaceae in 26.6% (4/15). Among Enterobacteriaceae, Klebsiella pneumoniae accounted for 6.7% (1/15) and Enterobacter aerogenes for 20% (3/15). Antimicrobial resistance testing of Staphylococcus aureus isolates showed that all (13/13) were resistant to at least one antibiotic class. Resistance rates were 53.8% (7/13) to oxacillin, 92.3% (12/13) to cefoxitin, 23.0% (3/13) to tetracycline, 92.3% (12/13) to erythromycin, and 46.1% (6/13) to gentamicin. The prevalence of MRSA among environmental isolates was 46.6% (7/15), while ESBL-E prevalence was 26.6% (4/15). Conclusion: The detection of MRSA and ESBL-E in the hospital environment indicates potential zoonotic and hospital associated infection risks in veterinary facilities. These findings emphasize the importance of strengthened infection control practices and provide a baseline for broader surveillance across veterinary hospitals.

Abstract

Escherichia coli normally inhabits the intestinal tract of poultry as a commensal organism; however, specific strains such as avian pathogenic E. coli (APEC) may become opportunistic pathogens responsible for colibacillosis in birds. The inappropriate use of antibiotics can increase antimicrobial resistance, which may impact public health. This study aimed to detect the presence of the iroN virulence gene specifically in multidrug-resistant (MDR) E. coli isolates associated with APEC obtained from duck cloacal swabs collected at live markets in Surabaya. This study was designed as a descriptive cross-sectional survey, and the results are presented as prevalence proportions without inferential or correlation statistical testing, as iroN detection was performed exclusively on MDR isolates. Samples were collected from five live markets in Surabaya and cultured on MacConkey agar (MCA). E. coli was identified morphologically through Gram staining and biochemically using Triple Sugar Iron Agar (TSIA), Sulfide Indole Motility (SIM), Simmons Citrate Agar (SCA), indole, and methyl red–Voges–Proskauer (MR–VP) tests. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed on all confirmed E. coli isolates (n = 120), and PCR analysis of the iroN gene was subsequently conducted only on MDR isolates (n = 14). The identification rate of E. coli in this study was 83.3% (120/144). Resistance to erythromycin was 81.7% (98/120), which likely reflects the intrinsic resistance of Gram-negative bacteria to macrolides rather than acquired antimicrobial resistance. This was followed by resistance to gentamicin at 19.2% (23/120), ciprofloxacin at 14.2% (17/120), aztreonam at 3.3% (4/120), and chloramphenicol at 2.5% (3/120). The prevalence of multidrug resistance (MDR) was 11.6% (14/120). Among these MDR isolates, 42.8% (6/14) were positive for the iroN virulence gene. No statistical association between MDR status and iroN carriage was assessed because non-MDR isolates were not screened for iroN. These findings provide baseline descriptive data on MDR and iroN-positive E. coli in traditional markets in Surabaya based on a limited panel of representative antimicrobial classes, without inferring specific resistance mechanisms such as extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) production.
