Abstract

Digital storytelling continues to shape how cultures are preserved and shared, making examining folklore in both its traditional and digital forms essential to sustain ethnic identity, local wisdom, and cultural literacy. This study explores how local wisdom and ethnic identity are narrated through digital folklore in the Indonesian story of Timun Mas and the Western tale of The Little Red Riding Hood. Utilizing Jan Harold Brunvand's folklore theory and ethnic literature as theoretical frameworks, the research employs a descriptive qualitative method with an American Studies approach. The primary data consists of words, phrases, and sentences from these two folkloric children's stories. The analysis reveals that Timun Mas embodies spiritual resilience, ancestral wisdom, and a harmonious relationship with nature, highlighting key aspects of Indonesian local wisdom. Meanwhile, The Little Red Riding Hood emphasizes awareness, self-restraint, and personal responsibility in confronting danger, reflecting values prominent in Western cultural contexts. These findings confirm that both stories serve as cultural tools to convey and reinforce ethnic identity through their narratives, characters, and cultural symbols. Digital transformation makes cultural values more accessible and relevant to today’s generation. The interaction between tradition and digitalization plays a key role in preserving cultural heritage in the modern era. The findings suggest that digital folklore can strengthen cultural literacy and ethnic identity. Future research is encouraged to explore transmediality and comparative literature to better understand how local and global values are negotiated through evolving narrative forms.

Abstract

Famous brands often incorporate charitable initiatives into their business strategies. While such practice is often perceived as genuine corporate social responsibility, it may also function as marketing tools to enhance the brand prestige and even profitability. This study examined how Rare Beauty, a renowned cosmetic brand owned by Selena Gomez, an American actress, utilizes social media campaigns to encourage consumer purchase under the guise of supporting mental health awareness. By analysing three campaign videos featuring Selena Gomez, released in October 4 and 10, 2023, this study employed Normal Fairclough’s three-dimensional Critical Discourse Analysis model to reveal how campaign narratives cloaks capitalist motives in humanitarianism rhetoric. Additionally, public perception was also evaluated through an examination of 21 most-liked comments on the campaign posts. The study demonstrates how the brand capitalizes on public altruism to increase its corporate image. At the textual level, Selena Gomez consistently initiates her campaign by addressing mental heal issues, followed by explicit calls to purchase products. Her use of inclusive “we,” bold claims such as “100% of the profits donated,” and emotive words (e.g., “together,” “incredible,” and “yummy”) serve to obscure the hidden commercial agenda. On the discourse level, Instagram’s features, such as the inclusion of celebrity (happens to be the company owner) voice-overs, swipeable slides, and call-to-action links, were strategically used to construct the purchasing act as a morally and even commendable form of charity. At the social practice level, the study found that the packaging of capitalism within humanitarianism is driven by the tendency to target women through emotional appeals, particularly by utilizing social issues tied to women empowerment. Thus, link cosmetic purchase to social causes seems to be an effective marketing strategy. Unfortunately, an analysis of netizen reactions reveals polarized responses; while many criticize Selena Gomez for being hypocrite, by advocating for mental health while remaining silent on the physical and mental health of war victims in Gaza, few demonstrate awareness of the capitalist mechanisms masked by humanitarianism discourse.

Abstract

The rapid development of digital technology has significantly transformed various aspects of education, emphasizing the need for students to not only access but also critically evaluate and ethically use information. Digital literacy has thus become a key 21st-century competency. Simultaneously, critical thinking—encompassing interpretation, analysis, evaluation, inference, and explanation—is crucial for navigating the complexities of the digital age. This study investigates the relationship between digital literacy and critical thinking skills among junior high school students in Purbalingga, Indonesia. Using a quantitative correlational approach, data were collected from 92 students through Likert-scale questionnaires based on the frameworks of Hinrichsen & Coombs (2013) for digital literacy and Facione (1990) for critical thinking. The validity and reliability of the instruments were confirmed through Pearson's correlation and Cronbach's Alpha tests, respectively. The results revealed a strong and statistically significant correlation (r = 0.623; p < 0.01) between digital literacy and critical thinking. Each dimension of digital literacy—information access, evaluation, communication, collaboration, and creativity—was positively associated with various dimensions of critical thinking. These findings suggest that digital literacy practices inherently contribute to developing students' higher-order thinking skills. The study highlights the importance of integrating comprehensive digital literacy education into school curricula to enhance technical competencies and foster critical cognitive abilities necessary for informed digital citizenship. This research provides empirical support for curriculum development that aligns with the demands of digital transformation in education.

Abstract

Rural communities in Indonesia are rich in intangible cultural heritage, including oral traditions, local languages, and indigenous knowledge. However, the transmission of this heritage to younger generations is increasingly threatened by modernisation, migration, and limited access to preservation tools. Mobile applications offer a promising avenue for bridging this gap by providing accessible, interactive platforms for cultural engagement. This study explores the potential of mobile applications to enhance cultural heritage awareness among rural communities in Indonesia. Specifically, it aims to identify key features and design elements that foster user engagement with cultural content. A qualitative exploratory design involved semi- structured interviews, app walkthroughs, and field observations in a rural Indonesian village. Thematic analysis was used to interpret the data and uncover patterns related to user experience and cultural interaction. Three major themes emerged: (1) cultural relevance and identity connection, where users felt pride and emotional resonance with culturally tailored content; (2) accessibility and digital literacy, highlighting generational divides and the importance of intuitive design; and (3) intergenerational engagement through interactive features, which fostered shared learning and strengthened family bonds. Mobile applications can serve as practical tools for cultural preservation when they are culturally responsive, accessible, and designed to support intergenerational interaction. The study contributes to the growing discourse on digital heritage and offers practical insights for designing mobile technologies that empower rural communities to sustain and celebrate their cultural identities.

Abstract

Speaking English effectively is essential at all educational levels, particularly given that it is a universal language that is employed in a wide range of professional and educational settings. Nevertheless, considering the significance of it, overcoming speaking anxiety remains an essential challenge for many students, hindering the opportunity to speak English with confidence. The aim of this research project is to investigate the points of view and experiences of Central Java university students who took part in the Ed-Sharing program, which aims at assisting students in managing and overcoming their fear of speaking publicly. Applying a descriptive qualitative methodology, this research collects data by conducting in-depth interviews with 7 individuals who actively participated in the Ed-Sharing initiative. The findings revealed that lack of practice, limited knowledge and vocabulary, the fear of making a mistake and judgment sensitivity, and a sense of insecurity and nervousness were the main causes of speaking anxiety. The results indicate that by providing a fun and interactive strategy and encouraging students to practice speaking in a secure environment, the Ed-Sharing program reduced anxiousness. The achievement of the program shows how crucial it is to build a setting that encourages practice and lessens the fear of being judged. The importance of organized, interactive programs for decreasing speaking anxiety along with improving English language proficiency is highlighted by this research.
