Abstract

The Great Mosque of Surakarta plays an important role in the history of islamic dissemination in the city of Surakarta. Along with the development of Islamic civilization in the region, numerous manuscripts were written by scholars, particularly graduates of Madrasah Mamba’ul ‘Ulum, an influential Islamic educational institution of its time. These ancient manuscripts contain various Islamic sciences and serve as evidence of intellectual heritage as well as part of the history of Islamic civilization in Surakarta. Most of these manuscripts have been donated to the Great Mosque of Surakarta and are currently managed by the mosque’s library as part of its responsibility in preservation efforts. This research aims to examine in depth the preservation efforts carried out by the Library of the Great Mosque of Surakarta. This study employs a qualitative method with a case study approach. Data were obtained through interviews, observations, and documentation. The results indicate that the library has undertaken various preservation efforts, including the digitization of some manuscripts, the development of a website for digital access, and collaboration with external parties, including academics and cultural preservation institutions. However, these preservation efforts have not been fully optimized due to several obstacles faced by the Great Mosque of Surakarta, such as limitations in human resources, infrastructure, and technology.

Abstract

Media headlines are not merely informative statements but compact linguistic constructions laden with ideological meaning. This study analyzes fifteen cultural headlines from Al-Misry Al-Youm (April–June 2025) using Noam Chomsky’s transformational- generative grammar framework (1965, 1975). This approach posits that surface structures are derived from deeper semantic structures through various syntactic transformations. Employing a qualitative-descriptive method and documentation technique, the study identifies dominant patterns such as ellipsis, inversion, and nominalization. The findings reveal that these syntactic forms serve not only to economize language but also as rhetorical strategies for framing cultural representation, institutional authority, and embedded social values. The discussion emphasizes that each syntactic transformation carries pragmatic and ideological functions that influence how readers interpret cultural messages. Thus, headlines are not neutral structures but deliberate discursive practices that shape cultural and ideological realities.

Abstract

This study aims to determine whether social media is effective in enhancing the digital literacy skills of Generation Zelenial (Gen Z) toward cultural information, and to what extent digital literacy influences their interest in visiting the Keris Nusantara Museum. This research uses a mixed-method approach, combining both qualitative and quantitative methods. Data collection was conducted through interviews with the museum's social media managers, questionnaires distributed to Gen Z individuals who are active on social media, and documentation analysis. The results show that the Keris Nusantara Museum's use of social media, particularly Instagram, has proven effective in influencing Gen Z to visit the museum directly, supported by their strong digital literacy and familiarity with technology. However, challenges remain in converting digital engagement into actual visits, such as limited promotional budgets and the need for greater creativity and innovation in content creation. These findings indicate that while social media can generate interest, additional strategies are required to increase real visit conversions.

Abstract

Tradition is a set of beliefs, thoughts, attitudes, understandings, customs, methods, and individual practices that are carried out and passed down from generation to generation. The continuity of a community in carrying out cultural rituals is a cornerstone of a tradition's existence in the midst of community life. In Sulawesi, traditions have developed that are continuously maintained and preserved, such as the barajama' tradition, a form of thanksgiving tradition carried out by the people of Polongbangkeng Selatan District, Takalar Regency. This tradition is carried out as an expression of gratitude for the sustenance that has been given by Allah SWT. The purpose of this research is to discuss the implementation of the procession and the values contained within the tradition. Furthermore, this research also discusses the relevance of the barajama' thanksgiving tradition for the present day. Functional theory is used as an analytical framework to examine the relevance of the barajama' thanksgiving tradition for the people of South Polongbangkeng District today. This research is not only narrative-descriptive, but also analytical-descriptive. The method used in this research is the historical method, which consists of four stages: heuristics or source collection, verification or source criticism, interpretation, and historiography or historical writing. The research findings indicate that the barajama' tradition begins with congregational prayers at the home of the host, followed by a communal prayer, where the host gives alms to the congregation, and concludes with a communal meal. Furthermore, the barajama' tradition contains values that are integral to community life, including religious and social values. The relevance of the barajama' tradition today is less relevant when faced with developments in the era, particularly in the religious sphere.

Abstract

Technology has had both positive and negative impacts. One of these impacts is in the field of literacy, which includes the use of local languages and interest in reading. The impact is the erosion of the use of local languages and the decline in interest in reading among children. However, on the other hand, technology can be utilized to solve these problems. One form of utilization is through the educational application Let's Read Asia. This digital application, initiated by Books for Asia from The Asia Foundation in 2019, presents hundreds of children's reading collections in various languages. The purpose of this research is to explore further the Let's Read Asia application in supporting the preservation of regional languages and increasing interest in reading so that later it can be redeveloped and recognized by the wider community as an educational application. The research method used is qualitative by conducting content analysis. This writing identifies various features of the Let's Read Asia application that contribute to efforts to preserve regional languages and increase children's literacy. The results show that Let's Read Asia is an application that provides thousands of digital reading books for children. This application not only acts as a means to preserve local languages but also encourages an increase in children's interest in reading through creatively designed and interactive features. Through the Let's Read Asia application, people can discover various regional languages and access reading materials practically.

Abstract

Javanese, as one of the largest regional languages in Indonesia, faces the challenge of declining usage, especially among the younger generation due to the influence of globalization and the dominance of national and foreign languages in digital communication. This research aims to sociolinguistically examine WhatsApp group conversations using Janet Holmes’ theory. Furthermore, this research also examines the use of WhatsApp as a digital communication tool for gamelan (karawitan) from McQuail’s perspective. It also examines in-depth efforts to preserve (revitalize) Javanese amidst the rapid influx of foreign languages and slang using the Grenoble and Whaley approach. Using communication ethnography and digital discourse analysis, this descriptive qualitative research collected data through conversation documentation and participant observation of community members. The results show that Javanese remains dominant in the community’s daily qq0communication, functioning not only as a communication tool but also as a medium for preserving culture and identity. The use of digital humor, stickers, and adaptation of vocabulary meanings enrich the dynamics of community interactions across generations and linguistic diversity. Private media such as WhatsApp has proven effective in supporting the sustainability of regional languages through intense and authentic communication. This study concludes that the use of private digital media such as WhatsApp can be an innovative strategy in revitalizing the Javanese language and preserving cultural values in the digital era.

Abstract

Middle Eastern countries, including Egypt, are among those identified through various surveys as having high levels of discrimination against women's human rights. One of the main contributing factors is the dominant patriarchal system prevailing in Arab nations. However, over time, a transformation in societal attitudes has occurred. This article aims to examine the transformation of Egypt’s stance on human rights, particularly women’s rights, by using the realist novel Imra`ah ‘Inda Nuqṭah Al-Ṣifr, written in 1973 by Egyptian feminist Nawal El Saadawi, as a comparative lens. The novel is considered a realist portrayal of women’s conditions in Egypt at the time. This article is grounded in human rights theories from both Western and Islamic perspectives, as well as feminist theories from prominent feminist figures. Using a qualitative descriptive research method, the study finds that at the time Imra`ah ‘Inda Nuqṭah Al-Ṣifr was written, women in Egypt faced significant discrimination, including political inequality, educational subordination, and limited family rights. However, a shift occurred during Anwar Sadat’s presidency in 1981, when Egypt became one of the Muslim-majority countries that supported international human rights documents, particularly in efforts to eliminate gender-based discrimination. Egypt ratified the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), albeit with reservations on articles related to Islamic Sharia as the foundation of family law in Egypt. Under the current leadership of President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, Egyptian women have gained broader access to education and other rights. Today, it is not uncommon to see Egyptian women driving, going out unaccompanied by their husbands, and spending evenings at cafés smoking shisha. Women have also gained greater political access, with some occupying key positions, such as the Governor of Alexandria. Nonetheless, certain roles, such as the position of ifta’ (Islamic legal opinion), remain largely male-dominated.
