Abstract

Plastic is one of the materials most widely used by humans. The more plastic that is used, the more plastic waste is released into environment and will polute water areas in various sizes, both macroplastics and microplastics. Microplastic are classified as plastic particles whose diameter is less than 5 millimeters. One type of microplastic that has an adverse impact on the life of aquatic organisms is polyvinyl chloride (PVC). The aim of this research was to determine the effect of PVC microplastic exposure on the survival rate and growth performance of tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus. This study was conducted in a completely randomized design (CRD) consisting of four treatments with three replications. The treatments were as follows: MP0 = No addition of microplastics (control); MP1 = Addition of 5 mg/L microplastics; MP2 = Addition of 15 mg/L microplastics; MP3 = Addition of 20 mg/L microplastics. The results showed that exposure to polyvinyl chloride microplastics on the survival rate and growth performance of tilapia through water made a real difference to Survival Rate (SR), absolute weight growth, absolute length growth, Specific Growth Rate (SGR), Feed Convension Ratio (FCR) and the abundance of polyvinyl chloride microplastics in fish gut. Keywords:MicroplasticPolyvinyl chlorideTilapiaSurvival rateGrowth performance

Abstract

Mud crab (Scylla serrata) is a group of crustaceans that live in mangrove and estuarine ecosystems. Mud crab have potential with high economic value and have a lot of interest from local and international communities because they have very high nutritional value. In cultivation activities, one of the factors that affect the growth and survival of mud crab is water quality. One of the most important water quality parameters in mud crab cultivation is salinity. Salinity is a water quality parameter that has a limiting factor on the metabolic and physiological conditions of mud crab. This study aims to determine the effect of different salinities on the growth and survival of mud crab (Scylla serrata). The method used in this study is an experimental method with a complete randomized design (CRD) consisting of 5 treatments and 3 replicates, namely P1: 5 g L-1, P2: 10 g L-1, P3: 15 g L-1, P4: 20 g L-1 and K (control): 28 g L-1. The results showed that the best mud crab growth was in the 15 g L-1 salinity treatment, the value obtained in absolute weight growth of 12.33 ± 4.93 g, the specific weight growth rate value of 0.28 ± 0.10%/day with a survival rate of 100%. It can be concluded that different salinity treatments have a significant effect on the growth and survival of mud crab.

Abstract

This study evaluated the effects of waterborne polystyrene microplastic exposure on the growth performance of Siamese fighting fish (Betta splendens) over a 45-day rearing period. A completely randomized design with four treatments and three replicates was applied: 0, 50, 100, and 150 mg/L. The evaluated growth variables comprised absolute length gain, specific length growth rate, absolute weight gain, specific growth rate, feed conversion ratio (FCR), and survival rate (SR). Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey’s test at the 5% significance level. Polystyrene microplastic exposure significantly affected absolute length gain, specific length growth rate, absolute weight gain, and specific growth rate (p < 0.05). Fish reared without microplastic exposure consistently showed the highest growth performance, whereas the 150 mg/L treatment produced the lowest values across the principal growth endpoints. By contrast, FCR tended to increase with increasing microplastic concentration, but the effect was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). SR remained 100% in all treatments, indicating that the tested exposure levels produced sublethal rather than lethal effects under the present experimental conditions. Water quality remained within a range generally tolerated by betta fish, suggesting that the observed response was more closely associated with microplastic exposure than with overt deterioration of the rearing medium. Overall, waterborne polystyrene microplastic exposure reduced the growth performance of B. splendens and should be considered a relevant emerging stressor in ornamental fish culture.

Abstract

Mozambique tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus) is an important aquaculture commodity in Indonesia; however, its productivity can be constrained by disease outbreaks, including Aeromonas hydrophila infection. The use of natural feed additives containing nutritional and bioactive compounds is a promising strategy to improve fish growth and health. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of octopus (Octopus sp.) ink extract supplemented in feed on the growth performance of Mozambique tilapia infected with A. hydrophila. The study was conducted for 45 days using a completely randomized design with five treatments and three replications. The treatments consisted of a positive control, namely feed without octopus ink extract with A. hydrophila infection (K+); a negative control, namely feed without octopus ink extract and without A. hydrophila infection (K-); and feed supplemented with octopus ink extract at 50, 100, and 150 ml/kg feed followed by A. hydrophila infection (A, B, and C, respectively). The observed growth parameters were absolute weight gain, absolute length gain, specific weight growth rate, and specific length growth rate. The results showed that octopus ink extract supplementation improved all growth parameters compared with the positive control. The best performance was obtained in treatment B (100 ml/kg feed), with an absolute weight gain of 10.77±1.53 g, absolute length gain of 2.65±0.39 cm, specific weight growth rate of 2.59±0.11%/day, and specific length growth rate of 2.16±0.05%/day. Therefore, octopus ink extract has potential as a natural feed additive to enhance the growth performance of Mozambique tilapia challenged with A. hydrphila.

Abstract

Fisheries are an important sector in providing animal protein sources and supporting national food security. The success of fish reproduction is a crucial factor that determines the continuity of production and the sustainability of cultivation businesses. Zebrafish (Danio rerio) is a freshwater fish that is often used in biomedical research and reproductive biology due to its fast reproductive cycle, embryo transparency, and ease of maintenance process. The study was conducted for 45 days at Andar Farm Lingsar. The method used was an experimental Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisting of 6 treatments and 3 replications, resulting in 18 experimental units. The treatments tested were a combination of various types of aquatic plants. The parameters measured included fecundity growth, fertilization rate, hatching rate, and gonadosomatic index. Data analysis was performed using ANOVA. If there were significant differences, Duncan's further test was used to identify significantly different treatments. The results showed that in the fecundity parameter, the Water hyacinth + cabomba substrate type produced the highest fecundity (117.6 ± 13.0 grains). In terms of Fertilization Rate (FR) and Hatching Rate (HR), the water hyacinth substrate produced the highest FR (79.96%), and HR (62.47%). Meanwhile, the Gonadosomatic Index (GSI) parameter also produced the highest results in the combination of water hyacinth + cabomba (20.4%). Water quality obtained during the study was within the optimal range with a temperature of 25-26 oC, Ph 7, and 6 mg/L.

Abstract

Abstract

Catfish (Clarias sp.) is one of the economically important freshwater fish that has been widely cultivated both traditionally and intensively. Catfish has many advantages such as fast growth, resistance to disease, and can live in water conditions that are low in oxygen content. The use of microbubble technology is expected to support the performance of catfish farming with a biofloc system. With the application of this technology, it is hoped that the oxygen supply from micro-sized air bubbles will increase. Because the diameter of the air bubble is less than 50 µm, it is expected to last a long time in the water and can spread horizontally so that it can be utilized optimally by catfish and biofloc. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of microbubble technology on the growth performance of catfish. The research method used a completely randomized design, with 4 treatments and 3 replications. The variables measured during the study included survival rate, length and weight growth, specific growth rate, feed conversion ratio (FCR), and water quality including temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, ammonia (NH3), nitrite (NO2-), nitrate (NO3-), oxygen consumption rate (OCR), and total organic matter (TOM).
